This story is truly sad that the dog got shot, but just goes to show how much dogs love their owners! I might get a dog now

My dog's are two of the sweetest pups you'd ever meet but they are also Pit Bull Terriers which gives them a bad name among many. I've actually realized other very human qualities among my dogs since my 4 year old Pit had puppies. The puppy we kept (Athena) is an extremely intelligent dog and she's also very hyper but she has already shown signs of protecting the domain, shes the first up if she hears anything and it's actually fascinating to watch because shes so young but I suppose shes that instinctual. I hope this dog survives and I hope they catch the bastard that shot him.

Glad the dog survived, brave indeed. Definitely deserves a few toys and the best food from now on

I don't think the breed really matters. The dogs' behavior depends a lot on what the Owners teach them.

The breed matters because here in the U.S. and in some choice states and choice counties and cities certain breeds are being banned. They're being taken from from homes and put down because they're considered "scary" by the folks in charge. These are the "assault breeds" of dog. Singled out for extermination for no other reason than some paranoid soccer mom is afraid of them and an elected official is more than happy to oppress his constituents while simultaneously securing the vote/support/money of the paranoid and timid.

It's no different than the "assault weapon" myth. The horrible part of the breed bans is that an animal loses its life to the whim of a tyrant and the family that loved that animal suffers needlessly.

Just like with guns we'll get a blip about an "assault dog" saving a life then we'll be slammed with "pit bull eats toddler" stories for the next 9 months.

Internos beat me to it.

I have dogs and a cat. Cats can be loving, just don't expect physical stuff from them. However they are high energy animals, and if you have one on your lap it will stabalise your heart rythms and give you a sense of well being. Try it.

Dogs are closer to us though, they are smart, and they just want to belong. And yes, protecting their family is what they are about. They really are our best friends. And each has it's own personality if you observe them, they really are as diverse as people.

One more reason Michael Vick should have gotten life, AND should have had to foot the bill for it.

Maybe we should turn the dogfighting rings into politician fighting rings?

2 go in, 1 comes out.

Just wanted to add the dog's name is D-boy not D-dog. I think we should at least give the dog the honor of its correct name when praising it.

Oh please, if that dog had brains enough to know what it was getting itself into it wouldn't have done it.
My friends have got my back, but I don't expect them to take bullets for me, although i do know that they care about me more than some mutt.

I'd accept your first point before it took the first bullet. But after two, if would have known enough by then to run.... if it wanted too.

Have you ever owned a dog? They are far more loyal than any "friend".

Well i dont like dogs,i guess that means i cant be trusted according to a poster, but this is a good story, the dog hardly knew the situation it was getting itself into though, the owners are probably the alpha and the dog was doing whats natural...i much prefer the loyalty and friendship a human can offer, but again nice story and glad to see it survived such a brutal attack...two times shot in the head? thats one lucky dog...

I used to foster a St Bernard I renamed Nana- her idiot previous owners named her "Smoke". And didn't bother with her one BIT- left her tied out 24/7. It took me 2 weeks when they brought her in to the shelter I worked at, But I ended up with a completely loyal, protective dog who didn't let anyone near me! I should have thumbed my nose at my landlord and took her home with me. Found out the bazfarg was robbing me blind. She ended up dying- And I doubt I'd ever find a dog like that again.... She was loyal, smart, kind, protective, and actually had a sense of humor- some kids were harassing the dogs outside at the shelter- and she managed to get off her leash, and chase them out of the gate. Once she did that, she came back, and did her usual guard stance on my foot. Kids never got hurt- but they certainly didn't pull a stunt like that again!

If women had some of the qualities of the dog.... *they'd* be man's best friend, too!

Dogs have an almost noble quality to their love and devotion towards us. It's pretty amazing how some dogs go that extra mile put their lives on the line to protect us from danger.

Give that dog the biggest ham bone in the state.

However, while he was delaying the burglar, the owner should have retrieved her own weapon and put a permanent end to the threat.

That disease is still on the loose, and he will attack again.

You don't reason with vermin, you end them. Either that or move to Europe of course.

I hope the dog pulls through! It's a testiment to how little credit we give our K9 friends. I have owned five out of the top ten "deadliest dogs" and never had a problem. People who were messing around with the dogs or tried breaking in had problems.

I had a Rottie that would let you in the house, but not out. Was quite funny when I walked in and found someone I didn't know sitting on the couch looking at my dog who came to me and laid on my feet and licked my face. The crook was so terrifyed, he called the poclice, was waiting for them to arrive.

Darn I miss that dog!

not a dog lover but i do like them just don't want to own one. but studies have shown most criminals will not enter a home if they hear a dog barking. when i moved to alaska and lived with my aunt and uncle they had a 75% wolf 25%malamute that weighed about 120 lbs. took almost a month for him to trust me but after that he was my best buddy. but i wouldn't recommend breaking into the house or attacking me if you didn't know him. we used to wrestle all the time and he never tried to hurt me even tho he could have killed me in a flash. i'm 6'1 and when i would get home he would put his paws on my shoulders and lick my face. and he was gentle with my one nepphew who was only 4. one night he started howling and wailing in my infant nephews room and it turn out he had stopped breathing in his sleep. he saved his life. dogs are definitely smarter and loyal than most people think. as for people- friends aren't as loyal-seems more friends i have the more enemies i get. as for cats i have 2 and they are great entertainment and are soothing in your lap but i bet if someone broke in they would help them rob the place if they didn't run and hide first- hell they might even open the door for them

Yes, I've owned dogs.
Yes, you have no friends.

Thats the cool thing about humans, they'll be loyal to you and you don't even have to own them!

I'm not sure the dog was brave or stupid for sticking around for three bullets, but what does that tell you about loyalty? That family doesn't deserve a dog like that. THIS is the kind of dog story that needs to be spread far and wide, and that dog celebrated for his loyalty and love to his family.

Personally, I've got a Boston Terrier. 100 years ago they were bred only as fighting dogs. The fight is gone from them, but the loyalty is INTENSE. If my dog doesn't like someone, he instantly turns into this aggressive little Napoleon who won't let them near me for anything. Despite that, I'd still take a bullet for my dog any day rather than the other way around.

My next door neighbor has the most adorable pit bull you ever did meet. Based on her alone, I've yet to figure out why pits have such a bad reputation? Sure, she's a loyal little napoleon-ette, but put a squeaky toy in front of her, and my dog is more aggressive by far.

Im not a pitbull fan but it is a great story. Everyone should own a dog. A Dog and gun combo in a burglary forget about it. Great find.
