Yes it does. We found out yesterday that Sony's PS3 is not immune to the sudden death syndrome.
My son was playing a game and it froze. When he reset he got the error code 80010514.
After checking around, it would appear that although rarer than the XBox problem, there are growing numbers of people who are getting this message. Apparently it's something to do with the Blu-Ray laser. Sony's website is useless, just tells you to restore factory settings.

We paid over £400 for ours and we have had it just over a year. I emailed Sony to ask for a replacement. My son laughed and said they wouldn't give one, but i think it's terribly unfair. It wasn't through no fault of our own, and it wasn't through normal wear and tear (most of these error codes get thrown up within the first month)

So anyway, just wanted to let you know that if you are a PS3'er and have been laughing at Xbox users over their RRoD......well, i wouldn't get too comfy :-(

google how to restore factory default settings. the RRoD on a 360 makes it so the console does not even start, or function AT ALL.

I have had no issues with the ps3 I purchased after having 3 xbox's RROD on me.

Your son should stop playing, he's not using his brain enough, ever heard of customer service? the console is guararanteed at least 2 years, dude... BTW £400 is way too much it costs 400$ (US/Japan), 400€ (Europe), use a converter and get your import one...

This is nowhere near the issue that Xbox has. The initial line up of PS3's had some issues with this, they've corrected the problem since then however. Also, Sony has a much better record of replacement and customer service than Microsoft does, at least from my experiences.

Yet another reason why I always pay the extra 40-50 bucks for a 2 year warranty with any electronics purchase.

I was looking on the offical PS3 forum yesterday and it turns out Sony are pretty bloody excellent. People were saying that even if their warranty had run out and they had no receipt, Sony were sending a courier, taking their old one away and bringing them a new one. Hows that for customer service!

As it turns out, ours started working again for some reason. But it's nice to know that if i get it again, Sony will help out. We got ours not long after the launch date so you're probably correct about it being the first batch.

I love the Playstation. Apart from a Nintendo 64, we have always had Sony. We still have our old PS1 and PS2 upstairs, still both working. Never liked the idea of the Xbox or Gamecube.

I'm with you on that one, I had the first nintendo released.. from that I went to a playstation 1.. had some problems.
The retailer who solt it replaced it with no worries.
Have had my PS2 since they were released and have had no problems.

At the moment I'm throwing up to buy either a PS3 or a Xbox360, not sure which one.

If i were you, i'd choose the PS3. If only for the fact that if something DOES go wrong with it, even after the warranty has run out, Sony will replace it for you (if it's the error code i was talking about)
And plus, we have just bought Little Big Planet (PS3) and it is the best game ever. I mean...ever. :-)

Little big planet doesn't look like my kind of game, but it sure does look addictive..
Just had a look on youtube for gameplay videos.

I have some kind of bad luck.. Or the Xbox 360 line was in some serious trouble!! I have been THREW 5 Xbox 360 in a matter of 3 years!!!
I can just hope that you guys and your PS3 dont have to go threw the same hassle I do with Sony products..
I have since vowed, that if one more Xbox breaks on me, Im getting a PS3 and totally boycotting all sony products..
But if it seems that Ps3 is doing to have some bad issues I just wont know where to turn but back to good ole PC games again...

Whats the deal with these machines that cost us 100's of dollars yet break down when you play a game..

The lady on the phone told me I should never play my Xbox for any longer than 3 hours at one time.. Turn it off and give it a few hours to cool down!

WTF! She must be crazy!! I will go on gaming runs for atleast 10 hours!!!
Crappy machines that only cost a fraction to make.. Then turn around and charge us tons of cash for shotty made machines!

Granted the games are great! Have no issue with the games..
Just those damn garbage machines they are pumping out!!

well, we got the error code again last night. I am phoning Sony up today. I am in the UK and loads of people were saying on some forum (UK) that even if it was out of warranty, they still got it replaced. So i am sorry to hear you guys had to shell out money. I'll report back here when i have phoned them.

Uhhh, hate to break this to you but the XBox is a Microsoft product. The PS3 is made by sony. So all those xboxs that have been breaking on you? They are made by Microsoft. This in my estimation explains a lot and why I'll stick with my computer. Then again I'm a old school gamer so my aging computer works fine for what I use it for.

Aging? In Computer terms that could be 3 days lol. I like my duo core 2.66ghz with 4gigs ram and a vid card that can play HD for my games. But I LOVE games like Gran Turismo, Mirror's Edge, so forth. Looking at getting Bioshock for the PS3 for Christmas. MORE levels, more items, more side stuff, more every thing.

Not to derail the thread or anything but my system is an older P4 1.4 Gigaherz cpu. Then again I have a triple boot system. Win 98, XP, and Opensuze 11.0 Linux. Mostly I play Mame games, some old Dos games, Planning on reinstalling in fact on my Win 98 partition Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 and enjoying a blast from the past. I can't run fallout 3 by any means but I've got the skills that if given the parts I can tear the system apart and have a pretty good chance of getting it back together. I hope. (chuckle)

I do agree that computers do have a tendency to age in that regards but the nice thing is upgrade ability.

My son's PS3 had issues where it froze on the boot screen, just a little over a month after purchase. The tech support at Sony didn't seem at all surprised that we were having the trouble and they went through no diagnostics with us once we told them what happened, just said to send it back for replacement. We sent back to Sony, got a replacement, and within a few weeks...same problem again. So we got another unit from Sony (3rd unit in just a couple of months).

This one did not have problems right away but I insisted on a full one year warranty from Sony. They only wanted to provide the remainder of the one year warranty on the original unit. I had to talk to two levels of supervisors to get someone who agreed that it was justified that I wanted a full one year warranty on the unit that had been sent to us, since we'd had two defective units in such a short period of time. It seemed as if they didn't have enough confidence in their product to warrant it for one full year.

We've had a Sega Genesis, Nintendo (original), Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Gameboy, Xbox, Xbox 360, original Playstation, PSP, PS2, and now the PS3. The only one we've ever had a problem with was the PS3. And the exact same problem on 2 units in just a short period of time.

I don't support one brand over another, just stating what happened to us with the PS3.

Well, i just called Sony up and they are the best company ever! We had a 60gb, had it for 18 months, warranty had run out, had no proof of purchase. They are sending out a brand new 80GB on Friday 19th.
Sucks to be an Xbox user i guess :-)

I just cant see where the PS3 is better unless you watch a lot of Blue Ray movies....how many PS3 users actually have a big stock of Blue Ray discs....Xbox 360 controller is far superior to PS2...PS3 feels too light and a bit lady like.....Xbox online is faantastic and the new dashboard is very pleasant....I even borrowed a friends PS3 to try out and I sent it back after a few days.....I have the original xbox since it was launched and have never had any problems with RROD......

I like my 360 a lot. Live has played up several times, but I don't usually go on too much because I hardly ever get connected to people in my country. That, and I don't like facing Americans, because seeing as I'm in NZ I'm pretty disadvantaged because of the distance from the person I'll have to connect to, who is thousands of kilometres away.

I do admit, though, that the PS3 will definitely outlast the 360, RROD aside. It has Blu Ray, and many of the PS3 game developers are utilising it fully. With the storage, it'll allow for more uncompressed files and greater gameplay. Well, I think that's how it is.

If Microsoft want their console to last a few years longer, I really hope they implement Blu-Ray. If they don't, they're screwed and they'll have to make a new console years before Sony will have to develop theres. If Microsoft have to release another console years before Sony do, I'll probably definitely wait for Sony's next console. Why? Because if it's going to be like that (I'm not certain that it is, but it is a possibility) then it'll be thrice as powerful. It'd be like intercourse with a horse.

Which reminds me, forgive the typos if there are any, and whatever you do, do not watch the Mr. Hands video.

P.S. I like the Xbox controller best.

im going to call back this weekend and try and speak with another supervisor. i wish i was in the UK at this point cause im fairly certain that they actually listen to their customers over there.
