Several of you beat me to Holst. Worth a listen if you like John Williams soundtracks (Superman, Starwars, Indiana Jones, ad Nauseum). You can hardly name a Williams blockbuster that doesn't, um, seem "inspired" by some phrases of the Planets. Particularly the Mars Movement.


I enjoy Beethoven, particularly Eroica and the whole of the Ninth Symphonie, though I could do without Schiller's lyrics sometime.

The third movement of the 5th is probably my favorite.

When it snows, I like the 1812 overture. I once read a history of Napoleon while I was snobound, which is why both Eroica and 1812 go together in my mind, though by very different composers.

In a different vein, there's all the Brandenberger Concertos.....

Here is a snippet from a great movie called "He ni zai yi qi": The boy playing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto for his dad in the train station. This is more about the emotion of playing - very intense.
