Magnapinna squid, one of which is seen at a drilling site in the Gulf of Mexico, typically live about 4,000 feet below the surface of the ocean. The rare creatures, distinguished by their peculiar tentacles, are much smaller than giant squids, which can grow more than 50 feet long. The creature, caught on video by a remote-controlled device owned by Shell Oil, was spotted last November roughly a mile and a half below the surface.
