This just may be me being paranoid, but I have to ask. Has anyone in the medical field (hospital) noticed a large increase in the number of people being admitted for intestinal bleeding?

Over the past week there has been a 10x increase of patients on 72 hour continuous infusion esomeprazole. Ninety or so percent of the time, reasons are unknown and diagnoses are left blank.

A friend who works at a hospital a couple of counties away has said the same. If no one has noticed, anyone have any ideas why this would be happening in a relatively localized area? I have spent about 4 hours looking for any mention of it online, but found nothing. Any input is appreciated.

Isn't that one of the symptoms of the china milk thing going on? There is a much larger scope of food/candy/drinks that contain this substance that initially was thought just to be in baby formula. Turns out it's in nearly every piece of chocolate manufactured in china. M&M's are the only thing that I'm aware of that don't use that substance or at least they said they don't use it in that.

Yep,
That would go along with the holidays. Was there a spike during Halloween too?

No increase in my hospital. I've been seeing the usual holiday stuff. Hyperglycemia, requiring insulin drips, and suicide attempts due to (I believe) seasonal affective disorder.

None here at least on the pediatrics end. At least those who should not. We have had a few GI bleededs but those were known liver failure kids with a history of it.

Man, I'm not sure if this is related but it very well could be. Last night we saw a massive amount of Emergency Medical vehicles and Police vehicles just driving all over the place - it was scary!

I still don't know what happened but I am trying to find out. We passed 3 emergency vehicles along a quarter-mile stretch of road, and then when we got home our next door neighbor was being loaded into a stretcher!

Thanks for the replies. I was kinda thinking tainted food, and since I started this thread, it's gone from quiet to another wave of GI bleeds to quiet again. I work Saturday night, so I'm going to call the gastro PA on call to ask what's going on.
