Russia building 'Berlin Wall' in Georgia: FM

Georgian Foreign Minister Eka Tkeshelashvili said Wednesday that Russian forces were erecting a "Berlin Wall" as part of a campaign to cut off rebel regions from the rest of the country.

Russia is trying to divide Abkhazia and South Ossetia from the rest of Georgia, she said in a speech to the International Institute for Strategic Studies think-tank in London.

Outgoing US President George W. Bush was a staunch ally of Georgia during the August war with Russia.

If there was any doubt the cold war was making a return to the world stage, here is another spike in that coffen...

For those that have short term memory... ill review...


In the mid 90's, Clinton Bombed the Bejesus out of Kosovo, bombing every bridge across the Danubt river... destroying bridges that were centuries old, and carved out a small Islamic Country, from a Christian Nation over 700 years old...

The Wests Proclimation of Kosovo as a country, infuriated Russia... and, when this attack happen, those that were in the know, said that in the future, we had set a predicent for OTHER nations, recognizing small automounos regions are legitmate countries...



Now fast foreward to the Summer of 08...

The US-Trained, Georgian President, made his move to recapture a small automous rebel region within his own country.

Most likely, with the permision of US and Isreali Advisors, Georgian Forces captured the city of Tiblisi... On the night of the opening ceremonies...

Russia poured into Georgian Territory...


The followers of the Bush Doctrine got what they deserved... They grossly underestimated Russia response to this situation...

Russia came down with the full might of the Russia Armed Forces, to Crush Georgia...

Acheviing Air Superiority within the first 36 hours, and within the first 72 hours, and gained ground control of nearly 30% of georgia...

Since then, a cease fire was negotiated, and Russia has dragged their feet with the terms...



Now, this...


Russia is going to be building walls...
Walls that will surround these rebelious regions, and essentialy, make these 2 regions, part of the Soviot Empire...


So there it is...

The Cold war is back...

Ever think they will let the people decide which country they would like to be a part of?

Sounds like a civil war scenario to me. Guess that means we will have to deploy "peace keeping troops..."

...I meant the "U.N." will have to deploy peace keeping troops.

Doubt the American people will like that too much.

But hey the neocons gotta have something to do, right?

The Russian Federation had 'peacekeepers' in the region BEFORE 8/8/8...


IMHO, Russian Peacekeepers, were the Russia Front Line Solders in this...



As for some sort of 'Peacekeeping' mission...

Yea right...

I would like one UN-Fanatic to please give me one example of WHEN and WHERE UN peacekeepers have even ever been MODERATLY succesful...

The UN is the worst orginazation on the planet...

I can name you a half dozen examples off the top of my head of UN incompetence...

Expecting the UN to keep the Peace, is like Expecting a Former Goldmen Sachs to run a good economy...


And we all know how that last bit is going

Don't mistake "Cold War" with geopolitical reshuffling. There won't be a true Cold War, because there is no critical split in idealogy between US and Russian government.

I agree with all you say about Kosovo, and Russia does see this as an "eye for an eye". But this is no more a sign of a Cold War that in 1998 when Kosovo was bombed.

Not exactly "full might". Innitial contingent from the 58th army that entered South Ossetia on the first days of the war numbered between 2,000 and 3,000, plus a few hundred troops from the Chechen special forces battalions. During the week of fighting, Russia had no more than 8,000 troops total on the front lines. Georgia meanwhile had nearly all of their 30,000 strong army near the conflict region. Plus Russia relied very little on aviation - nothing compared to the 1998 NATO bombing of Kosovo, including Belgrade.

Air superiority was never achieved, because Georgian SAMs were active through the war, shooting down a number of Russian jets. And Russia didn't use anything other than the outdated Su-25 and recon Tu-22.

Well what did you expect? Very high tensions still remain, and South Ossetians and Georgians have much animosity towards each other. They will be at each other's throats again without proper measures.

And I seriously doubt this will be a real "wall". You can't build a wall around South Ossetia or even small parts of it. The region is rugged and mountanous, and not passable as it is except for a few roads. All they are going to build are some border posts and installations - and that's not new to anyone.

I really think it is premature to talk about a Cold War. Yes - relations have cooled, and won't be repaired for some time. But with globalization and common capitalist policies of two sides - it will not get much worse. Especially if the US finally changes its foreign policy. US can't afford a Cold War now, and Russia has more important things to worry about.

The peacekeepers that were stationed in South Ossetia on August 8, were in no way "frong line soldiers". In following with the UN mandate, they only had light arms and military equipment. No armor except for a few BMPs, and no artillery. Plus they were caught completely off guard - as evidenced by 10 dead peacekeepers immideately following the attack - all of them died at the Russian peacekeeping headquarters near Tskhinvalli.

UN is as much to blame for what happened as anyone. Both Russia and Georgia invited UN to station its own peacekeepers in Kodori Gorge and in South Ossetia on several occasions. UN didn't want to get involved in the mess and instead sanctioned Russian peacekeepers with periodic monitoring. If UN was doing its job as it should have - it would have placed neutral peacekeepers there. This would have likely avoided the conflict, as Saakashvili would not have attacked them - but you never know.

Anyway - Russian peacekeepers were the next best thing. And remember - that there were Georgian peacekeepers two, who were hardly without an agenda. But Russia should get credit for stopping the first South Ossetia war back in mid 90's. If it didn't intervene, either the Georgians would slaughter remaining Ossetians, or the Ossetians would slaughter remaining Georgians in the region.

The UK Govt will not seriously challenge anything that the Russian Govt does. If they do it's farewell to our gas and oil.

Im not going to argue over the details of the South Ossetian War... Over who had what guns, or what planes exactly were used.. or whatever...

Russia ran a FINE military operation....





But, the building of Walls is something that was not in the treaty...




It took nearly a decade, but the US stupid involement in Kosovo finnaly had a counter effect... That may have been the action that set in forth this mess...


You may be right about a classical 'cold war', where 2 ideologies are fighting... that is out of the question...

America is in a lull...
Now, Russia had been rising... the fall in Oil does hurt them... not as bad as the middle eastern dictatorships, but hurt none the less.



The end result of this is that Russia is going to be in control of this important geographical region...


There are not many passes thru the Cacuassas, and the Russias are in control of them...
