Something I posted on xbox forums...
Console makers today keep selling consoles cheaper than it costs to make them. When it is all said and done, the console is scrap and you move on to
the next one. I hate this way of doing things. Lets face it, new consoles are on par with pc's (albeit somewhat outdated ones) at this point.
There is nothing special inside of them anymore. Unless you count the ps3's cell chip (which blows) then all you have is a mini pc. That is the
direction I think console makers should go. I am sick of buying all this crap hardware when I could easily make a mini pc to run games faster than
any console. PC games are alright, but they lack uniformity. I would love to see console makers change their tune and switch to software/peripheral
companies. Everyone says these companies make all their money on peripherals anyways. Post minimum system requirements and sell a hardcore/awesome
gui for gaming using the peripherals they sell, or make dual boot systems. I think Microsoft would have the easiest time with this b/c they are
already software developer.
I know this is far fetched at this point, but I think we will end up there regardless. I wish they’d just make that leap sooner than latter.
Computer companies could come together and do the same thing they did for vista, make console certified machines. Everyone would benefit. Those of
us who are hardcore could build our own and upgrade when needed (errr when anything else better comes out), console makes wouldn’t lose money on
their crap hardware, the certified pc sales would increase pc sales (of course it would require Vista or Vienna b/c of dx 10), apple would suffer b/c
they couldn’t play the games, and the consumer wouldn’t be left with a stupid piece of crap hardware when it is all said and done, they could use
it for productivity or ship it to some third world country. Does it really sound like a bad idea? Do you really think we won’t end up there
anyways?
And let us not forget the current console makers wouldn’t be responsible for RROD and returns. Responsibility would be on the heads of the pc
makers or the consumer who could just replace a part. Realistically this step needs to happen; the sooner the better. M$ needs to stop trying to
corner markets and start looking to increase profits.
If this sounds like a good idea to you, and console makers wont change their ways, then it will be up to the consumers to demand this sort of thing.
Boycott new consoles, the heck with continually being screwed over with a piece of hardware that is a pc but you can't use like a pc.
