Syrian site 'resembled reactor'

news.bbc.co.uk

A Syrian site bombed by Israel last year had features resembling those of a nuclear reactor site, the UN nuclear watchdog says in a report.

Israeli warplanes flattened the facility in the Syrian desert in September 2007 on suspicion that it was part of a covert nuclear weapons programme.

But a senior official close to the IAEA said the type of uranium found was not that usually found in munitions.

The US has said the target of Israel's raid was a secret nuclear reactor built with North Korean help that was nearing completion.

So it's coming to light now that Israels bombing of that Syrian site was due to the idea that Israel thought it was a nuclear power plant.

This raises a few concerns in my mind, as it might with the rest of you.

1: The site was bombed by Israel on a mere suspicion.
2: It wasn't the suspicion of nuclear weapons that led them to bomb the site, but a suspicion that it might be a power plant.

With the recent issues surrounding Israels shaky dealings with the rest of the middle east, especially that of Iran aswell... one must wonder, even if Iran's nuclear ambitions are purely for power generation, Israel may just bomb them regardless, as they did last year with Syria.

With events in the region depicting a very unstable environment, let's hope Israel doesn't try this again.

What do you think?
Given that the materials for nuclear power generation are not compatible with nuclear weapons...
Should countries have the right to produce nuclear power plants, power plants that we here in the rest of the world rely on for our energy needs?

I think everyone can agree that Israel needs to quit being so bomb happy. That being said, Iran should know better than to provoke the U.S. and Israel. Obviously neither are going to accept a nuclear Iran. The fact that the Russians are helping Iran with the reactor (I think I read...) makes me wonder if they are going to help them build a bomb. Do you think Iran would actually be responsible with a reactor? I suppose if there was zero chance of them messing up, or making a bomb I could support it. I just don't see this being a particularly good idea.

Why not let them build a bomb? I know that may seem like a silly question, but really, why not let them? Who are we to tell Iran that they cannot build a nuclear bomb? Who are we to tell them that they cannot build a nuclear power plant?

If Iran decided that in order to do their part to cut down on CO2 emissions, they would implement 2 nuclear power plants and 2 huge wind farms, will they be told no by Israel and the USA?

The hypocrisy involved is here sickening. The United States, with the most advanced and heavily armed military, packing the most nuclear warheads, and meddling with the affairs of countries all over the world, has NO MORAL GROUND for telling other countries what they should and should not do.

And why are people so worried that Iran would be some sort of loose cannon if they had a nuclear bomb? Why? Though the names of places have changed, the Iranian people have been there for a very long time. They know the circumstances and consequences. Contrary to what the mainstream media would have us believe, Iran is a beautiful country populated with normal people just like all of us. I have a hard time believing that they'd risk all of it just so they can merely attempt to build a bomb.

I agree whole heartedly.

Given Iran's very long history of peace (aside from defending themselves against Saddam) the numbers say we should be trusting Iran with nuclear weapons WAY more than many other countries... especially the US.

This garbage about Iran wanting to attack other countries is a load of lies... every quote I've been given claiming they want to harm Israel has turned out to be a complete fabrication. All I'm seeing from the official channels are offers to cease the violence between Israel and Palestine (not even Iran's problem), and offers to assist with the reconstruction and security effort in Iraq.

How are these people bad?!

They remind me of fellow Canadians, only, stuck in the worst place on earth... exactly where Israel and the US want to be next.

As such, the western propaganda groups are working over-time to make Iran look like a nightmare... unfortunately, people are actually buying it!
I thought our few generations were supposed to be better at seeing past the BS our media feeds us... yet what I'm seeing is a load of people who have never left their home country, repeating what the media wants them to think...

Iran isn't evil. They're actually VERY peaceful.

And the evidence? Points directly to nuclear power plants... something Iran's government has said it's people will need to progress technologically.

Look at what it's given us. So much power, we're heating our homes with it at night, and cooling them in the day!
If we were still using coal/gas/oil generators, we'd never afford that kind of an electric bill.

And we're telling them they can't have it? Why?
