For the record, having observed the west in the last 60years, the Soviets figured out why and how carrier's were so important. You had forward projection of tremendous power, with out the the automatic need of using nukes. Any President would say, after he was told there were problems in several locations, where are the carriers? Hence if I ran a country, I would if I could at the least get us an aircraft carrier.
Carriers are slow sitting ducks ready for Antiship-Missile Penatraition, this IS the real reason the Soviets nver built many-BIG ones.

Really?

Well, the main points of reply have already been discussed so far in this thread, so in lieu of going with the 'You're wrong, because I'm right' approach which seems to be your domain, I'm going to ask you a question:

How would an anti-ship missile go about hitting a carrier?

Please describe how a ship or land-based vehicle would get in range, and acquire the ship.

Then please describe how the missile would manage to defeat the entire carrier battle group, detailing its evasion of each system's radar, point-defense, and anti-missile armaments to make the strike on the carrier.

And if you want extra-credit, please tell us which major power would be capable of doing this, and how their specific weaponry would manage to do so, as obviously Iran isn't going to try and sink a carrier anytime soon.
[Not to say the United States is invulnerable, but sinking a multi-billion dollar vessal would likely result in Iran having a rough next month or two.]

As sitting duck's as they are to attack a US Carrier and its battle group would lead to Nuclear response, not a wise choice even if you did have Sunburn Anti-Ship missiles and manage to get passed the AEGIS systems in the first place.

So with this in mind they can go where they want with impunity, granted they may be susceptable to certain attacks but knowing the repsonse its highly unlikely any Country would be daft enough to attack one.

As for the Chinese having a rusty old Soviet one!!..Well im not hiding behind the couch just yet.

Its taken the US (and the UK to an extent) the best part of 70 years developing tactics and training with these systems so even if the Chinese build 20 in the next 5 years they will still be in their infancy tactics wise so we can sleep safe for a while.

Plus the USSR did not give up on the Carrier fleet Idea because they realised they were vulnerable to attack, they dropped the Idea because they realised they could not financially compete with making them and their systems so they opted for Submarine strength instead...far far a more cheaper option.

OK OK

Before everyone goes off half cocked

They are building a super carrier that does not mean they will become a global threat!

Rivaling the worlds best Navies require more than a few new ships!

LOGISTICS is key in this arena, supply locations, fuel and ammo depot etc the US, UK, and France have had those in place for decades!

so before everyone gets hysteric remember they do not have either the numbers nor the experience nor do they have the logistics set in place.

Not yet anyways!

Thats tottal B.S. thier Carrier that they have now is about 34-4-% smaller than the Nimits Class Carriers, so it wont be difficult to make one for them.

Heres some further info on China's Carrier(s):

During the first stage, China proceeded to buy several scrapped carriers from overseas in order to study the parts. China had previously pursued similar policies both in defense and other industries. Between 1985 and 2002, Chinese firms purchased a number of vessels, for ostensibly for a variety of purposes. These included for amusement parks, hotels, scrap metal, as well as likely analysis of design and other developmental purposes. China has a long history of aquiring technology for reverse engineering purposes.

Russia can build 10 Nimits size carriers.

Eather way, i highly doubt if their carrier project can be considered a valid threat. in all honesty, i feel that it is within their right and frankly, its about time.

eh? I don't think so..
They need to start with one first. The current one is not a Nimitz-sized carrier as well.

China... to make carrier...
???

That's a good one.
What will they think of next.

hahaha

All joking aside.
Its basically a floating Panda-Bear in shark infested waters.
(It's defenseless and it serves no purpose)

not sure i agree with the serves no purpose part - while i agree that for now it may be negligable but in the future... say they send it to patrol the pirate stricken gulf or to defend the contested waters/islands with Japan or projects its might to the contested arctic polar regions and some sort of 'international incident' takes place??

in the future, it may serve their purposes only too well...

China is not an advanced industrial nations. Shipbuilding, iron and steel manufacture and assembling computers is not "advanced". Designing the processors for the computers is.

Of the c. 30 countries classified as having advanced ecomonies, China is missing.

Regards

I think you're still underselling them in saying assembling computers since chinas semiconductor manufacturing was in 2007 7% of world capacity (Americas 16%) and is in massive growth, but you are of course right in pointing out the importance of design (not forgetting research) which is why they are sending so many students to Universities in the US and Europe.

They are designing ICs since I've seen an article about them having to send the designs abroad for prototype production do lack capacity in china so I guess there must be big growth in design as well, but at what level of design I don't know.
