I’m starting this thread because I see the need and desire of those here who believe we are entering dark days ahead. Weather you believe the cause is Bush/NWO/ObamaReptilians/Aliens/2012/Polar shift,.. whatever. Most believe we are in for bad days ahead.

I will only post one link to substantiate my feeling of impending doom. I will not waste time debating wether or not doom is coming. If you don’t think it is, this is not the thread for you.
Former Goldman Sachs Chairman says we are in for something Worse than the Great Depression

My belief is that whether shadow groups are pulling strings or not, the economic demise of America and many modern western countries (primarily European) is coming. History has proven time and again civilizations go through great periods of turmoil while the world corrects itself, then the process of greed and extremism start again. An endless cycle that may one day lead to the end of civilization as we know it.

Maybe this is the time, maybe it isn’t. I do think this will be a particularly harsh period in the years ahead as (again using History as a guide) severe economic turmoil eventually leads to war and rebellion.

Most modern day survivalists are not fully equipped to deal with what’s coming since their focus is on the worst case scenario.

I feel that if you have to “Bug out” with your guns and gear and live off the land, you have already lost the main battle and are just focused on subsistence. This means you are too weak to be of much use in fighting the people that put you in that situation in the first place.

Basic survival Guideline:

1 Economic Survival
Make sure your job is as stable as possible. Also, realize your employer’s first loyalty lies to itself and when the chips are down, you are low on the loyalty list.

Reduce your unecessary debts but don’t consolidate. Don’t tie your unsecured credit debt to your home by refinancing.

Do not take the planned Federal Mortgage relief (read between the lines once your debt is federalized, you can never get out of it)

Buy needed items now, finance the purchases by selling things you don’t need while their still worth something.

Stockpile cash/cash equivalents and use it to invest incrementally in things that will give you a return on investment. What looks like a stock market bottom, isn’t as long as we still have money (which most of us do)

Stocks: Pick some companies that will make money in the bad economy
(companies doing reverse mortgages come to mind, Genworth Financial GNW, Metlife MET, Wells Fargo) Wheat, Rice, Soybeans, Oil, Copper (not Gold or Silver) but I don’t think prices on these commodities have bottomed yet.

2 Family Unit Preparation
When I say family unit, it includes your closest friends also, as they are persons you value and chose to have in your life not just a born into unit.

Get the weakest members stronger, warn them of coming hardship and give them advice on how to prepare (mostly ecomnomically)
Make sure everyone is onboard and on the same page, drop people that don’t believe (if you can) since they will be a weight upon you when it does get bad. Also, they are bad for morale, which will be important throughout this event.

Stress to your unit the importance of confidentiality, especially to kids. Your planning should not be widely known to strangers/childrens classmates. If/When things get bad you could have people showing up at your home that heard you were prepared hoping you will support them thus, putting you in a position of either draining your precious resources on people who probably won’t be good long term contributors to the unit or fighting them off at the risk of the safety of the unit.

I will try to edit to include usefull links
To be continued...

List all family unit assets:

Jobs, incomes, skills, hobbies,
Tools, vehicles, food and food prep items, medical/first aid items knowledge, weapons, military items/knowledge
Networking, list everyone potentially useful that your unit knows. EMT’s, Business owners, Bankers, Police Officers, Military/Ex-Military, Gov Officials.

List all family liabilities:

Debt, Bills, Medical conditions requiring continuous care/drugs.
Bad habits, character/trust issues (you will find out how important this is when the time comes, believe me for your own sake)

3 Defense

One man is easily defeated, two twice as hard three….get it? Safety in numbers.
Talk to the neighbors on your left and right, behind you and across the street. If there is a breakdown in law enforcement in your area, single people, single homes are easier targets than groups with organized defense. At your discretion, notify law enforcement of your neighborhood watch program. Doing this will ensure you remain within the law and not targeted by law enforcement and in many cases will be beneficial to you. Overstressed law enforcement may be appreciative of a secure area and sometimes even provide you with warnings/intelligence of bad groups moving towards your area. Stay on private property and do not trespass on properties not involved in your unit defense area.

Weapons:

If you live in the U.S. good, you have guns!
If not, I will defer to others in your areas that may have a more educated input than my own before addressing it.

Sell/trade bolt action rifles for semi-automatics. Exception: .308 cal rifles especially Remington 700’s keep those! Why? Accurate at long range can get Adapters for caliber conversion to 32 long, 32 ACP, 30 Carbine. One weapon capable of shooting 4 different types of ammo! In general though, bolt guns make poor defensive weapons due to their slow rate of fire.

Sell/trade single/double barrel shotguns for pump actions w/higher mag capacities (5 or more). Sell revolvers for semi-automatic pistols 9mm, 40SW or 45’s only.

Best suited weapons: AR-15 (223 only not 6.8 or 308), Remington/Winchester/Mossberg 12 or 20 gauge pumps,
IMO Glock pistols are the single best defense pistol around for defense/survival. Best in 40 Caliber SW. Why? A Glock 40SW you can get conversion kit to shoot 9mm or 22lr in. That’s one weapon with the capability to shoot 3 different calibers (important if you have to scrounge/trade for scarce ammo) I have shot squirrels with my Glock converted to 22lr also.

Basic weapons deployment: Semi auto rifle outside during daytime. Shotgun outside nighttime or day/night road sentry loaded with first 2 rounds slugs to disable vehicles. Pistol inside day or night and as back up to primary weapons (rifle/shotgun)

Food:

Learn to grow a garden. Food is the hardest basic of survival. Meat is great if you can find it preserve it etc. but, when times are tough you can live a veggie diet in better health than an all meat diet. If you have a house and a backyard it’ll be easier for you. Make sure it can’t be seen from the street though and you will need to protect it. Those in apartments got a balcony? Talk to property manager about using extra space at complex for a co-op garden if things get rough. This was done during the Great Depression. People in high rises, you’re screwed. Really. I recommend you move, you will be screwed if it does get as bad as it sound like it might.

Water.

Don’t depend on city water. Think about water collection systems and water storage. City water stores bad, filtered rainwater stores better. Make sure your storage containers are clean flush and refill systems whenever you have the opportunity. Any doubts on the safety of your water and small amount of bleach or boil. You can find tons of links on this so I won’t bother here.

Communication:

Prepare for life without Internet. Seriously. Maybe you won’t be able to afford it, maybe NWO will take it out so we can’t communicate with each other or maybe Russia, China or U.S. will shoot the satellites out of the sky prior to war. Rest assured, if there is a big war we will lose the internet prior to it’s start. That will be your cue that major war has begun. Download all useful information to your computer and update often. Print out critical info and maps of your area and areas you plan to operate in.

Satellite TV and Navigation Satellites will be targeted if a major war breaks out so do not count on them.

Cell phones, not sure. IMO they will work but reliability will be bad. Some areas coverage will drop others not. Have a landline backup.

Neighborhood watch needs communication whether walkie-talkie, cell phone, whistles, drums, hand signals, whatever, plan to develop a communication system. A superior communication system will be your greatest advantage as a unit. Search the Internet for com systems, Military Hand Signals and Military 10 Codes.

ATSers are an amazing diverse group, I have seen highly talented people from all fields and walks of life contribute here. I humbly ask for you to contribute what you know to this thread. If you disagree with me on some items let me know, let’s figure the best way to prepare together.

What I don’t want is to waste time with people’s ego or debate if things are going to get bad or not. I hope they don’t but, I’m preparing for the strong possibility that they do. Call me a paranoid doomsaying freak but, it's stupid not to be ready. Most important, don't spend all your time and resources preparing for the "Worst" part and neglect trying to minimize the effects of whats coming in the meantime. If you make the right decisions now, it will soften the blow to you later.

My Background:
Grew up in the country on a farm, lived in Colorado for 5 years hunted, fished, camped, backpacked, hiked, rode motorcross, 4-year Marine, desert warfare school, amphibious assault instructor, jungle warfare school, TAD to HQ Security Okinawa, Extensive Urban Combat training, Rifle Expert, Pistol Expert, Shotgun Qualified, Scuba Qualified, Water Survival Qualified, USAA Boxing, MMA training 3 years, Vocational Metalworking classes, Daytrading experience, Self Employed 8 years, read a lot about business/investing/military history. I don’t live in the city.

Hope to hear your input, if you're smart and have good information to add, now is the time to share.

What good will guns do against tanks, our boys will blow us to hell they have been trained very well, and the NATO troops they won't think twice. And have you read the FEMA REX84 document, what to do in economic disaster. Why is there over 600 concentration camps spread out across America, I know that one in Alaska holds 500,000 + but there is a lot of those illegal Mexicans in Alaska. What's a real joke is that things are bad no one working or a lot are not, but there is no real reson for it nothing has changed since 90s except NWO. Thing could be great, where are the flying cars we were to have, it's not in the plan. We have all been sold out, and only a few saw it coming.

I was trained well also, doesn't mean I'd turn my rifle on Americans. Don't get me wrong. Alot will, maybe even most of them. By far not all of them and not the Veterans no longer serving. Alot of tanks in Iraq and Afghanistan and it's still hard to control Iraq 25 mil population compared to America's 300 mil. They have to get out of their tank sometime and there are ways to "encourage" them to get out.

This would be an extremely hard country to control and they aren't strong enough to do it...yet. The economic demise is coming too soon they are not ready to control us yet. They are frantically trying to get ready but, I think it won't be possible. It is a losing battle for them but, greed is a strong drug and they will try anyway to their own demise.

Don't go to the camps if that is in fact what they plan for us. People will band together and shoot anyone who trys to force them to go.

Personally, I don't think they will send us to camps, easier to enslave us in our own homes.

Look into Reverse Mortgages, it's their next way of trying to take what little Americans still actually own.

Debt is slavery, cut yourself from any debt you can. That still won't make you Free but it'll get you one step closer.

Cheer up dude!

I am with you on preparing for what is coming as much as it is possible to do so. There are too many signs for what looks to be ahead of us for me to ignore. I have to say that I have also quit talking about this because most people are in serious denial and so now my time is better spent in getting my own life in order. I agree with you on many things and I appreciate that you took the time to do this. Knowledge is power, especially if people are willing to share and to learn and can keep an open mind. My particular take is to become as independent and self-sufficient as possible and like you, join with like-minded others, if possible, as there will be safety in numbers. I am not a gun-toting person per se, but I am considering some weaponry and self-defense measures to be sure.

My particular feeling is safety first, primarily to move out of the city and into a small community, preferably one that is agricultural-based and is out in the countryside (I have also been looking at crop maps). I am looking at small towns where the political climate is Conservative (also easy enough to find out when checking out places to move to). Why? Because most likely the people there will also believe they have a right to protect and defend themselves and won't back down without a fight. Sort of like the old West.

As for the necessities, water purification is primary and food storage is what we will use for emergencies (a year's worth approx.) but ultimately finding other ways to source our food - by growing it, living in an agriculturally based community where we can trade with neighbors for other things we need, ideally to be able to fish, have chickens for eggs, goats for milk, etc.

I too believe it is important to save as much money as you can now while the dollar is still being accepted for payment. If the dollar becomes completely devalued, silver and gold will still be accepted as a means of exchange (if the gov't. doesn't try to confiscate gold and silver) as well as things to trade of value that you will be able to barter with, tools, small appliances, a skill for trade. Training and personal skills that improve the quality of living for yourself and others will be valued and needed.

Keeping as healthy as you can will be of prime importance, the last thing you want is to be sickly and a burden on your group.

I would say think in terms of alternative medicines if you can, using honey as an antibiotic, chamomile for sleep, etc. I hope it doesn't happen but if vitamins/minerals are deemed illegal in 2009 (the AMA/FDA keeps trying) then my best thought would be to start learning how to sprout wheatgrass and other beneficial seeds and to extract the juice from the wheatgrass for maximum health benefits. Also even if we stock up on vitamins and minerals, should this happen, vitamins will last only so long and we will have to find alternatives then.

I would research as much as possible now, learn as much as you can, download/print/save important ideas/recipes/how-to's and order important documents/forms or books (birth records/passports).

Think in terms of what-if's and how you would deal with each situation.

Unless and until one is able to generate their own power, in case of power outages, I would not invest in electric tools or electric appliances over manual ones for that reason.

If you have to buy, make sure it's practical and will last for years. Thrift stores can be a great resource. Cast iron cookware can be used for outdoor cooking and is healthy for it's absorbed iron properties as well.

There is much more but it's late. I love these threads where we can learn from each other and share ideas. To me it's important to know there are those out there who really care and want to connect and to help someone else. I think this is what America is really about. Thanks.

my two cents... i was handed down from my grandfather, who was a wood worker alot of old fashioned tools. the good thing is you can make about anything you want without electical power. i have 3 huge wooden boxes filled with hand tools to cut, shape, sand, drill, plane, and put together any type of wooden product. only the imagination limits what i can produce. that said i'm going to hang onto them, and if i have to, hang a shingle over my garage that says i'm open for business.

Great thread!

Family/community unity is key. Also, concerning the Internet we must consider that BBS's will pop up everywhere if government control is gained, or the Internet is taken out.

Also, we must realize that new styles of the "pony express" will pop up for Patriots (probably using churches as the main delivery points).

Water, food, and ammo are important of course.

I've been using $10 a week to purchase a stockpile of food. I purchase 10 gallon plastic bins from Wal-Mart to store them in, and I buy a new one everytime I fill one.

One must remember that life can be prolonged for quite some time with these four things - water, vitamin tablets, sugar, and fats/proteins. All vitamin supplements are fat soluable, so vitamin supplements will not work without some fat in your diet.

Sugar is necessary for proper brain function, so candy is also important if you do not have a proper diet saved up.

It is entirely conceivable that you could live for some time on water, vitamins, hard candy, and rice mixed with crisco and beans if need be. Though it might not be prefered, or very tasty you could last for sometime.

Even from day to day, too, skim as much as possible from your budget, maximize the money you do spend by buying on-sale items in bulk, providing it's something you can use or preserve.. Supermarkets are discounting somethings heavily all the time, usually staples are far cheaper than highly processed foods, but one or two hours a week spent cooking meals ahead of time can fit into a busy schedule, while you still have a fridge and freezer with power. Learn to can, too if you have time. Make up vegetable soups, fruit compotes or jams, anything that you can make as nutritious and cheaply as possible. By investing time and money into this sort of cooking, you're preparing a bigger stockpile, and giving yourself extra cash to play with at the same time. The internet has thousands of recipes for anything you like, and you can always modify to include say, smaller portions of meat, more veggies or rice, to make each meal go a lot further.

I'd say also, invest in some basic camping gear, just in case. If the worst comes to the worst, and you're living in a tent city somewhere, having a decent tent, sleeping bags, camp stove, etc, cannot possibly hurt. Imagine not having your house, what would you really need and want that you could fit in your car, or carry if necessary. What becomes important to you then? figuring that out ahead of time will help lessen the shock if something bad does happen. Have a plan made while you're calm and safe, for what could happen if you're not calm and safe. Better to rely on the decisions you made when your mind was clear, than in a dangerous or stressful situation.

Water, we have our own well but that only works if the power is on so I made a simple bailer out of pvc that will fit between the well casing and the pump conductor pipe. If you want to make one make sure that it is small enough to fit in the well without pulling the pump.

Fuel, I have been laying in fire wood. I didn't buy it but talked to people about trees in their yards that needed to be taken out. Also pallets can be gotten free and burn great.

Gardens, you need to know what will grow in your area. Corn and Milo are not going to work on our place. Potatoes and other root crops work best here. The nice thing is that you can over winter them in the ground if need be.

Weapons, I have some differences of opinion with you, however in general I agree with your position. If you need to go into town and things are quiet then I think that a lever action in .357 or .44 causes less drama than my FAL. Higher rate of fire than a bolt gun with large mag cap. For long term use I have seen breakage of Glocks in matches. I have two but still like my 1911. All .45 acp. Chamber inserts, I have these for the 06, in .32 acp they make less noise than a .22 lr and hit harder.

Pay off all debts. We have worked hard to get debt free and save money.

One point that you did not talk about is Relative Deprivation. With your back ground I am sure that you are aware of this. To those of you that are not what this is, is that the more you have and the easier life you lead the worse the effects of a crash are. To a bushman in Africa no running water or no electric power make no difference in their life. To some one in New York who has never been without these it seems to them as a critical state. I have started looking at ways to lessen the impact of this. Simple things at first. Skip daily showers on the weekends. Use hand soap to wash my hair. Turn all the lights, TV, radio ect. off and read a book by the window. Turn the heat way down on the furnace and ware a sweater in the house. Change my diet to include more unrefined foods so that a big change of diet will not be as big an impact on my system. Make up your mind that tomorrow may not be like today.

Right now, it is critically important for people to get their personal economic houses in order.

I agree with the "get out of debt" posts. Be very frugal with spending. Conserve money.

What I think is on the horizon is the possibility of total economic meltdown on a global scale. That's the most likely TEOTWAWKI scenario we are currently facing, in my opinion.

Great Posts.

Some more input:

As most of you know, most people are living in a state of denial still.

DivineGypsy9, I agree with you on quitting talking about this with most people to an extent. I am wary to giving up too much information about myself so I am hesitant to open up and talk with people about this. I approach the subject carefully and let the other person open up about their concerns. If they have none and think everything is hunky-dory, I move on.

I encourage this approach because valuable information can be obtained from people. Information they don’t even think is valuable could give you insight to the bigger picture

Examples:

1)
I friend told me about an estate left to him by a dead uncle which he thought he was going to get a good inheritance for. He did not pay attention and signed for the estate. Turns out he signed for debt, the estate was reverse mortgaged it’s actually going to cost him $6,000 to clear the estate or have a foreclosure on his credit record since he signed for the estate.
Because of this info, I began research on reverse mortgage companies and saw that this is the inevitable direction we are heading. Whether or not there is a severe depression or not. I invested in Genworth Financial (GNW)@ $.97 a share it’s at about $1.45 now. 5-7 years from now I expect it at $10 regardless of economy. Check it out, but be careful. We have not hit bottom yet, although some stocks have, other have a ways to go, and a lot will no longer exist 5 years from now.

2)
Another friend mentioned his sister (just barely a baby boomer) got laid off from Compaq computer, her job was moving to Mexico. Don’t find that interesting? Her job was in accounting, Compaq is outsourcing their accounting dept to Mexico. I find that stunning with all the corruption in Mexico. A hidden story whose significance was not even realized by the people it immediately affected, yet lends further credence to the big changes coming our way.

3)
Talked to one of the richest close friends I have. Net Worth over $4 million. WAS over $4 million. Taken massive hits on his blue chip stocks and he jumped on Gold when it was in the $900’s. Know what? This fairly rich guy sees all the signs, agrees we are a year or more away from the real-estate bottom, recognizes the real-estate bubble/credit default swaps are massive problems and still is in denial that a severe worldwide depression is on the way. He just says this is a good time to buy into the market.

Waterdoctor:
You’re absolutely right on Relative Deprivation.

Maybe advice to people like:
Stop buying the daily $5.00 non-fat latte and buy a small coffee maker for $20 and make your own.
Then
Take the money $23 you saved the second week on coffee and buy 2, 25lb bags (NOT 1, 50 lb bag) of rice from Sams Club or Cost Co.
Then
Take the next $23 and buy as much powdered egg mix as it will get you
Then
Powdered Milk, Then seeds for a garden, Then a lot of Coffee, Then Ammo, Then etc.
(not insulting Latte drinkers, I was even hooked on them for a little while!)

Find other expenses that you can do without and use that money to finance your preparations.

Again,
Most people are in denial, don’t waste time and energy trying to convince them otherwise unless they are someone you chose to stand by throughout this ordeal.

You can’t change denial by the masses so use it to your advantage. Sell things you don’t need and that will be near worthless in tough times. Fancy exercise equipment, boats, unused skis, etc.. Sell them while someone is ignorant enough to still buy them, and then buy something useful to you. That’s survival.

Don’t dump all your excess money in the stock market yet, as tempting as it may be for some. As long as most people still have money, it has not hit bottom. But it within months after the mass layoffs it may. Still do not sink everything in because it could drop even lower if war breaks out.

Hillbilly, you make a very good point that few folks think about. Fat. I recall a German soldier who related that in the harsh winter after the failure to take Moscow, he and another soldier on the retreat found a supply of lard.

They would melt the lard and actually drink it. It had a ton of calories, which is just what their bodies needed under those extreme conditions. He further related that if he tried the same thing in temperate weather, he would retch it up. But under those harsh conditions, his body knew it needed this valuable source of calories.

You can have all the rabbits an squirrels and deer in the world, but without an additional supply of fat, you'll starve in spite of a large food supply of these animals. They have no fat to speak of. A man has to have fat.

One other thing that you will gradually weaken and die over is a lack of salt. Your cells in your body are little batteries. The salty blood is the negative, and the potassium in the cells provides the positive. Lack one without the other - the batteries go dead - and so are you. Salt is cheap right now, but will be beyond precious in hard times.

I also stock sorghum. Tons of calories and vitamins in a concentrated, natural substance. Likewise honey has antimicrobial properties.

Salt and Fat. Don't leave home without them!

Do not trust landlines as a backup. Whether they are more reliable than cellphone network depends very much on the area you live in.

In cities landlines are still very much that, physical wires buried in the soil. However in rural areas the landline network will make a jump to wireless at some point. For example where I used to live landline networks used to be divided to cells of maybe 10 miles in radius. These cells then had a central point where the connection switched from wires to wireless, using targeted microwave dishes - the same technology that cellphone networks use for communications between cells.

The landline hubs have been digital for years, so id the power goes down the landline network goes down (eventually, they do have backup power).
But as I said this depends a lot from the location. If you can have an ADSL connection trough your landline provider you are propably connected to the network trough wires. If your provider doesn't provide ADSL, then your landline propably turns into a wireless at some point.

Interesting thread...I did ten years active duty..Im good to go as well..HAM radio is something I didnt see anybody post as a possible means for comms..PRC would be nice but expensive, 223 ammo is quite pricey so if you going to stock up, Now is a good time. Maybe a stockpile of batteries especially 123A and maybe a few good surefire lights. Since your a former Marine I can see why you like the Glock, I do as well but most civilians may shoot themselves or somebody since there really isnt a true safety but a good gun that is able to brave the elements nevertheless.

Like some I have a plan on where Im going to fall back to but I have some loved ones who I would get to safety first, Its really funny but when we would have some downtime this was a topc of discussion and where we would go and it is still in place to this day. Lets hope for the best but prepare for the worst. My biggest fear is to engage american troops here in the US....Good thread

Great thread, well done OP...

Just wondering if any guys from the UK have read this ???

If so what do you think and are doing the same ?

My preparations have taken a bit of back seat at the mo, but I will be back on them soon.
My other half knows that I am preparing and lets me get on with it, though I feel she thinks of me as a bit of a fruit cake.
I can't even tell the Father in law as fails to see or believe anything will or could happen.
Funny thing once, We had a what to do in an emergency booklet come thorugh our door from the Gov. He threw it away before anyone had the chance to read it and said " Well I already know what to do" with the attitude of well my parachute is open jack.
