Safety: perhaps others would disagree, but I don't particularly think anywhere in Central or South America is going to be safer than the US. Sure, al Qaeda isn't likely to detonate a dirty bomb in Peru...but you'd still be more likely to face violence on any given day. Am I overlooking something?

Belize: probably still connected with the UK. Lots of hurricane potential. Lots of drug traffic. Potential conflict between ethnic groups/income disparity. The primary source of national income? Tourism. It is beautiful and cheap to live, though. Internet is spotty outside of the cities (though this info is second-hand from a friend who was working there a year ago).

New Zealand: that'd be nice, clean place to live. But connected to the UK, and that seems to be a concern for you.

Is your primary concern finding a place where the gov't will leave you alone? I'm still not clear what you're trying to protect yourself from and why you think moving will fix it.

I am afraid that after they finish doing their damage in the US they will look for more people and places to conquer and mess up and force their crap on.. so I would like to be low key....maybe thats dumb but its just what I think is going to happen....

That is why I do not plan on practicing medicine out of the country I just want to be in the background....

Why are you scared of Obama being President?

I don't understand this. You sound like we did when the Bush administration was in power. Maybe you should stay the next 4 years and see how it goes.

No, I just think he is not going to be able to stop the plans that are already in play.....I try to be hopeful yet practical....I want to wait until as close as I can until the last minute to leave.....this is the beginning of my research because I think the time is coming really soon that I need to leave. If I am wrong, at least I get to have a little adventure and I will learn about another culture. If I am right I get to live a little longer.

I think the living conditions domestically will improve. I think that the ruling elite will realize that maybe destroying the middle class isn't a good idea and we won't support them if they continue on their path so they will change and I have a theory that Obama is this change that the elite want. But, regardless of the conspiracy theories, I think you should take a wait and see approach. Bush was an idiot. Obama actually has a brain. I just think you should take the wait and see approach... because... I don't think Obama will be anything like Bush at all and I think our country will get better and if it does I don't want anyone, or you for that matter, to be disappointed that they left.

We have something called 'immigration watch' in our country and New Zealand is one of the best places to rear a family for many reasons.

But us being Asian and from a third world we can only expect blue collar jobs and maybe a professional job after many years even if we got engineering degrees and years of experience in the field.

But you as American citizen, might be accommodated better. You definitely won't be required this tons of difficult VISA and immigration requirements as they would require us.

But even though you get white collar job, I don't see New Zealand offering same salary rates as in USA, the cost of living may be cheaper but you might not afford some of the things you can in USA.

Canada would be a great place to go. It has many of the same customs and everything that we do here in the states. Some minor adjustments would have to be made to adjust to local conditions, of course. Lots of open space. You can live far enough from most places that your privacy would be enhanced, and you would still have access to the internet for your home based business.

Maybe for different reasons but, my wife and i have been having this discussion, In the U.S. we are thinking Idaho overseas it's Ireland.

My husband and I moved our family to north Idaho about five years ago. We love it here. We have the mountains, tons of lakes and rivers, so if you like the outdoors it is great. And this is coming from a true "California girl".

I would prefer a place that is not part of the NAU so no Cananda. I dont know much about New Zealand but I have heard some scary stuff about Australia like internet 2 and the fact that there are no gun rights. I need to be able to protect myself.....

If I decide to stay here I will consider Idaho. It seems safe and low key. Are the land/houses cheap?

Though I personally have a heart for the blazing sun of the spokane region of (WA), I would warn away from the northern half of the panhandle of Idaho (for personal reasons) due to the dangers associated to canamerican smuggling routes-abeit my impression is from the 70s. Outside of that I believe the Idahoians likely maintain a right and proper anonomity.

How about Wyoming? When I see their license plates with their minimal digits, I think.....like no one lives there..That's great!

I myself am thinking of a move into the northwest quadrant away from the western ocean states, which are just overpopulated, oversmogged, ripe with ideal foriegn targets-and in range of N Korea?

I wonder what a slow quiet world looks like.
I think you should research more of the people living under the UK monarchy; ask them questions, because it isn't like a pharoh/slave relationship.

I love my country and it's people. I refuse to to be labeled a quitter or a deserter.

I have no respect for anyone that enjoys our riches in this country then runs away when the going gets rough.

Nice sentiment, but the Republic's ship-of-state has been boarded and badly damaged. Maybe irrepairably.

We've had criminals running the show for some time -- plus we just witnessed the biggest overt theft in the history of the world in the name of the Wall Street bailout. They are purposely destroying our country for a reason. Unfortunately, we are not privy to the final destination.... at least not yet.

I get the impression the final stop will not be anything remotely recognizable. Compare England in the 1960's to England today for a ballpark sense of my meaning.

I was thinking some islands not in hurricane belt ie Trinidad and Tobago. They have plenty of oil and no hurricanes BUT I understand that crime is a serious issue.

Any other island suggestions? I want to stay somewhat close so that if I had to come back to the US I could.....

I was thinking of Brazil or Argentina too...ATS any feed back?

Hmm, no offense Cairowoman, but I would seriously recommend at least taking a vacation to some of these countries you're thinking about moving to first. See things for yourself before packing up for a big move. I'm not sure how you might measure it so that Argentina or Brazil would be a safer place to take your family than, say, a quiet spot in North America. Argentina nearly collapsed a few years back (and there's still some great survival blogs from people who live there). Check out the levels of organized crime and corruption in nations before pulling up stakes here (I don't mean NWO-level corruption, I mean for example, having to bribe officials to do the job they're already paid to do). And check out gun control issues (since that's important to you as well).

I'm with the others who recommend a cabin or small-community life within the US or Canada. All the same, best of luck finding what you're looking for.

I've been thinking about moving to Canada.

Another idea would be to find a nice, small town in the USA where you could have a garden large enough to grow your own veggies, get a decent job in the town and live the simple life. Give up the trappings of our credit sick consumer society as much as you can. Get out of debt. Don't be materialistic. Have just a few essential possessions. This is the way my grandparents lived back in the 1950's -- 1960's and I remember it being very nice, the simple life.

Unless God keeps a city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

In the whole wide world there’s no magic place
So you might as well rise, put on your bravest face

It’s going to get bad here in the USA. It’s seems to me that there’s a potential race war brewing, if you listen to the right wing talking heads. Check out eastern central OK, and the Ozarks of Ark-MO. The globalists will have just as hard a time messing with you there as they will anywhere else, and there you’re sure to have like minded folks to deal with.

We live not too far from Coeur d' Alene, and I drive into Spokane for work. The housing prices are still kind of high, although they are coming down. I am unfamiliar with the Boise area.

Do your best to set yourself up for personal survival. It is hard to know where and what will fall. The whole world will likely change as we are mostly based in a monetary system that will present a domino effect around the world. I don't think coasts are
great places to be residing at the moment. Probably inland - and above flood plains.

But survival wise - look to self sustain.

Greenhouse to grow your own organic food - (stay away from GMO seeds)
Mobile Water filter to clean water - (some are better than others)
Anything and everything that runs SOLAR -
Cooking abilities without electricity

Stock up on everything.

Look for an area where the rest of the world isn't trying to "get out" of.
Good time to buy old farmhouses and the like.
They are expensive to heat - but there are ways.

Most of all - don't be afraid.
We are here to experience life -
however it presents itself.

This change may prove to be the best time of our lives.

None taken. Going to go visit before I move several times (If God allows).

That is why I put up this post because I want suggestions and things to think about like you and others have so eloquently said. I appreciate all of the feedback. As much as I love the US over everywhere else I have been in the world (mostly europe and mexico) Although living in the US is not totally ruled out, I think I want to leave and I think it would be better if I did. I am currently looking to get a place outside of the city in the meantime but as long as it is somewhat close to a city I am pretty screwed right?
