As I believe, cursing is using God's name in vein. Profanity is the use of words deemed vulgar by our society. Cussing is southern slang for cursing. We in the south have done a fair bit of word butchering thru the years and a lot of it has embedded itself in our vocabulary as actual words.

What is regarded as profanity, shifts with the zeitgeist of our times.
The word damn and bloody were once regarded as offensive , so what has changed ?
Its just a subtle shift in perception.

Ultimately, every utterance that comes out of our mouth is communicating , there will, and should, always be a means of communicating ones outrage, be it warranted or not .

The tone , and volume can also turn a word into an invective .
We collectively adjust what we deem "appropriate" often unbeknown st to ourselves , language is dynamic , forever changing , just slow enough for us not to notice, like a glacier.

edit; to tidy up

I'm kind of confused over this. People complain because the FCC tries to keep the airwaves clean so these words don't become normal everyday speech, then you complain when people start using these words as everyday speech. What is it that you want?

That is very true. 'Pants' was actually a bad word at one point in history, also.

You can't ban the use of certain words because some people find the word in and of itself offensive...banning hate-speech is a different story. It's one thing to say the F word when you drop a hammer on your foot, it's another to call someone an F'ing F'er in hopes to start some kind of verbal or physical brawl.

I hope the police know the difference and don't abuse this as they've done with many other things.

This is a private security police force hired to deal with aggressive pan handlers, but they are now responding to numerous other things. Its not about swearing exactly. Creating a disturbance in public has always been on offense. There are many who don't want to hear obscenities, but, unless the disturbance fits under the public disturbance and is extreme, such overbearing and repressive laws are fascist.

lol, if the point of teh post is to point out that cops can swear freely but when a member of the public they can arrest them for it. Its the biggest hyporcicy and i agree!.

if its about people not liking other people swear, really, is it worth even discussing, the simple fact that a word can be taken so seriously is beyond me, their only words, they dont hurt anyone except people who have nothgin better to do than get offended by swearing.

of course, t, if you get offended then go tell them about it and youll find, if theirs kids about ect, people WILL normaly watch what their saying, and stop when they realise their is kids about.

i enjoy the fact that if i stub my toe i can swear to my hearts contenT

Oh you are a bright one aren't you. You say "its not good to be somewhere with kids and theirs loads of swearing goin on, but thats just the way it is, we cant do it, everyone has the right to swear or say whatever they want"
So, when someone is standing next to me and my kids at the grocery store dropping F bombs into their cell phone, that is ok?

I certainly don't think someone should be arrested for swearing. The point that I was trying to make is simple. Watch what you say and actually think before you speak. Use good judgement and show some mutual respect. If I stubbed my toe in front of my grandmother I certainly wouldn't lay down a barrage of F bombs. When you grow up you might see things differently.

sorry to tell you, i am grown up, i just have a storing belief that people should have freedom of expression.!

did i say its ok to swear loads in shop ? in front of kids ??

i suggest you actualy read what i said and not reply with basicly a crap from teh mouth, as thats all it is..

would you rather they were illegal? ye, lets make words illegal , first we will start with the streng swears, you know, F''s and C';s, but once their banned people will use the other less insulting worde, like sex and pussy, but wait, someone else thinks this is now offensive, we have to bann them now, and so on and so on...

if you dont like my view then thats your tough, no need to go on personal insults is their like the 2 replys ive had in this post by 2, ill call them typical pompus american ATS over millitant church fearing posters. Im not asking for people to listen, im not obama, lol, you dont need to listen or like it.... if your american and believe in free speech, yet you are against people swearing, well, its a bit of an oxymoron aint it, freedom of speech but no swearing LMAO!

:edi.

also, at the end of teh day, their only offensive because PEOPLE take offence, nothgin else, they are all just other words for body parts and processess, the sooner people realise that a word shouldnt be taken so seriously (esspecialy when it explains something natrual like most swear words) the sooner swear words wont be an issue, as reeally, c'mon! theirs way more important stuff in life than worrying about words coming from peoples mouths.
