I recently read an interview taken by a belgian magazine called HUMO.
The man interviewed was named Aubrey de Grey, and he was a Gerontologist who is on a personal quest to find the key to become 'immortal'.

I put a link to that magazine's page, it's in Dutch though. The wikipedia entry contains several interviews with the man though.

In it, to me, it became apparent his search for eternal life was based on fear of death.

He also said he spent a lot of time in the graveyard because of 'interesting bacteria'.

I think the man is a total nutjob whose work could easily cause riots, famine and wars. If only a few get it, count on it being the rich and shameless.. if everybody could get it, the world'll be a réally crowded place in a short matter of time.

The whole interview also made me think of Necromancers, strolling in graveyards at the dead of night in order to defeat their greatest fear: Death itself..

What's you guys' take on this fellow ?

sounds like a nut!
but if i think about it, what would be the best first step in becoming immortal?

Yeah, he as at least observing the process of dying and what happens to cause aging and dying. I am sure he is not the only one in this research. Do you think they would let everyone know.

I think if anything like this would exist; the government and the rich would be the only ones to benefit.

I think there are so many things possible in science. Once we cap the extent of what we do, we will never see beyond that.

Imagine if these great scientist lived forever; what would the world be like and how much further along would we be.

I wonder if he has people invested in him already. These kind of people can be considered a threat to government; I wonder if he comes close to proving this theory that if he dies or they try to outcast him in society?

I think I am a nut job too then cause it does seem very possible...very good topic to keep an eye on for quite awhile...

Another random thought:

I am not religious and do not go to church but...With unlocking something like this and this guy comes out strongly with this idea of immortality; could this be something like our "heaven" for humans? This discovered allows us to "live" forever? With this extended time, would allow us much more time to develop our energies on this planet as well as potentially others in space?

Another thing:

Isn't it weird that this "scientist" is presenting to everyone these "seven" items;
He presents himself with his long beard; (resembling the typical perception of God); and presents this idea of immortality.

Is this some underlying thing that he is using the psychology of people to persuade using his ego and people's perception to lure them in. Very subtle resemblances here...

Gosh, this has really intrigued me..

So, there were scientists trying to prove him wrong in the magazine technology review but if you look at this article..i would say that this is a start of engineering the body and has a little bit to do with what Aubrey is talking about..

HAving the body repair or do certain things for you:
