Lets be realistic if getting into statistics on what people are eating. This can only be calculated by what people are buying.
Meat has gone up due to new diet plans that make people stay away from carbs (Atkins) etc. eat create more meat intake. There is also the fact that so
many people are using so many different pesticides on veggies, that many people have stopped eating them due to fears about the pesticides.
There are a large number of people that have begun growing their own veggie gardens to avoid the nasty pesticides. This will not show in your stats.
Most of the stats, if not all, are going to come from markets that keep track of what people are buying. If they grow thier own, then they won't be
buying them right?
Personally, I prefer to buy my meat (unless I get enough deer to hold me for a year during hunting season) but grow my own veggies. My wife and I grow
enough (generally) for us, my inlaws, and even sell some when we grow too much. Thus, anything tracked that we buy will be meat only. Not only does
the fact the we grow our own veggies mean it will not be tracked at the supermarket, but it also tastes better as there are no pesticides etc. Many
people have gone this route, especially in rural areas.
Yes, meat intake has gone up, however, I highly doubt that it is as high as 61%. Probably closer to around 25 - 30%.
Not to mention, the list ONLY shows meat consumption, and does not include any info about veggies, breads, grains, fruits, etc thus making it one
sided.
