Pakistani Police Arrest Cleric Who Presided Over Kids

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Police raided a wedding between a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl in Pakistan's largest city, arresting the Muslim cleric officiating at the ceremony and the children's parents, a senior officer said Friday.

The cleric had not yet begun the ceremony in Karachi, which was attended by 100 guests, said deputy superintendent of police Malik Mazhar.

I think I am going to be sick! This is outrageous! As a mother of two young children, I am without words about this. Just absolutely sick. Our world is really going down the tubes. I don't know all the traditions of Indian culture, but I do have friends in India and I know they do not participate in this gross practice.

It says its permissible by Muslim scholars when they reached puberty, and its could end the 8 year feud between the families. Man this is a hard choice.

I really hope you are being sarcastic. Because marrying children is hideous. I don't care if they have gone or are going through puberty, they are still too innocent to understand. It is a sick practice...

There is no reason in the world that a 5 year old and a 7 year old should be getting married.

Anyone who is associated with this should be jailed. The kids should be placed in foster homes.

This is seriously wrong.

Did you not hear about the woman who married a snake, who the feck would marry an animal. Happened in india.

Why do we think they are civilised, because they customer support in computers, lol.

It would be "sick" if it happened in the west, but not so in the east.
This reflects age old cultural and religious practices there. It is not sick. It is custom.
Having said that, it is also a severely outmoded custom and completely inappropriate in today's world - anywhere in today's world - east or west.
Its not the only religious practice to be in need of updating.

I lived in England for a summer a number of years ago.

My friends whom I lived with had neighbors from Pakistan. My friends and I used to go outside and "play" with the kids and we became close to them and the kids' mothers.

Anyways, to make a long story short, a new girl came to live with the family and she was the cutest little girl I had ever seen. She was 10 and was shy and barely even spoke to anyone. Days after her arrival my friends and I received a wedding invitation from one of the mothers. Of course we accepted and attended many parties and then the wedding.

Before the wedding, we were asked if we wanted to meet the bride. Of course we said YES! We walked into the room where they were preparing her and who do you think the bride to be was?????

THE 10YR OLD GIRL. She was being forced to marry a 17-18yr old boy.

I fought SO HARD to not cry. It was SO HARD for me to appear happy for her - because I was not.

The look on this CHILD'S face (the sadness, fear) will haunt me forever.

Ok youre going a lil over the top here, this is a pre arranged marrige. They arent going to just jump in bed and have sex. They leave and go home with their families and whenever they are 12 or 14 they get back together. This is not the marrige of children its a pre marrige.

Do you have proof of this? Because I am not sure if that is true for the children in this story.

Because the forced wedding I attended of a CHILD...the CHILD consimated her marriage THAT night at the age of 10. The CHILD was no longer her parents, but her husbands.

This is all very real and it is still going on today.

I studied the culture and have also seen documentarys over it. People are to quit to point fingers. Yeh its a pre arranged marrige if you want to get mad get mad over that. These kids are not going to have sex yet or live together.

Also Id like to point a finger myself, atleast these people stay together which is far more then I can say for american marriges or other countries for that matter. People have no bonds anymore they just move on when they want to do someone else.
