Listen for the quote at about the 8 minute mark of the recording.

What he discussed was that the Constitution is essentially a flawed document that it’s framers had “blind spots” when creating it.

apps.wbez.org...

I wonder if he still believes this.

Actually, he is probably correct...

the founding fathers never intended the constitution to be used for so long, and could not possibly foresee how the American republic would operate in over 200 years.

The founding fathers could not anticipate Nuclear Weapons, the gas chamber, assault rifles etc.

I don't believe that the constitution should be tossed out, but It may require a little tweaking... unpopular idea, i know, but its basically undeniable.

If Jefferson was alive today, he'd lead the country in another revolution, and draft another constitution with less leeway for corruption...

Well, we never actually followed the constitution 100%, its been 'tweaked' since it was formed...

I don't mean amendments...

It might have to be tweaked further than that... something has to be done to fight the corruption..

The Constitution is tweaked when neccesary, and is done, by the people of the respective states by amendment. The Constitution is a document that defines the role of government, and the prohibitions of that government. We the people decide when the decument gets a tweak, not Barack Obama and the liberal socialist left.

Apperently, Barack is seeking to "right the wrong" by "reparations" for black people mostly due to the injustces of slavery long ago. The whole agenda seems to be fixed on "redistributing wealth" in that way, to that end.

But our country is not yet ready to become a socialist state. As this news becomes more known, Barack will lose grace with the voters and fall away. And we will still be a free capitalist society that rewards hard work with wealth. It's called the American dream.

this reply has more unsubstantiated claims and opinion than one can shake a stick at.

a pleasant reminder of the new ATS policy regarding politics on ATS:

Obama is a tool - here we are about a week away from elections and we STILL keep finding little pieces of garbage like this that have come from Obama's mouth.

Exactly - it is abhorrent to even "desire" changing the ACTUAL Constitution. They weren't stupid - they made it possible to AMEND the document; please Google "amend" and refresh your understanding of that word.

Give us a break, will you? Obama's tax policies are not designed in any way, shape or form to give '"reparations" for black people'. And either you know this and choose to ignore it or you are an ill-informed troll. This whole 're-distributing the wealth' argument is being used by McCain et al as a form of class warfare.

The truth is that this country has , over the last couple decades, suffered from a concentration of wealth at an unprecedented rate. That coencentration of wealth causes a wealth disparity that is seriously detrimental to the stability of the country. 90% of the wealth in this country is owned by roughly 1% of the population. And that is increasing even further as the elite seize the wealth of the middle class through forcelosures.

But by your statements it is clear that you are a supporter of the Elite. If you feel that what we need in this country is a fuedal society (elite and peasants) then you are on the right track. We're gettting closer every day. Socialist state? Give me a break. You wouldn't know a socialist state if it fell on you. Reducing the disparity of wealth has nothing whatsoever to do with socialism. But that frightens the Eltie. They wanty ALL the wealth and ALL the power. The Rockefellers, for example, have said that they believe 'only rich people should have money. Because poor people don't know what to do with it'. Beautiful. I'll add mine: Only gourmandes should have food becasue only they know how to appreciate it.

He's talking about civil rights, individual representation. Remember, the Constitution allowed slavery, didn't protect women's and black's right to vote...

Yep, there were some flaws there.

He said the original Constitution was imperfect, and reflected deep flaws of Colonial Culture... Blacks were slaves and had no vote, but were counted as 3/5 of their population.

What is your specific concern, mabus?

What is the fundamental flaw of the Constitution of the United States of America that the Senator from Illinois Mister Barack Hussein Obama is addressing specifically?

Did I miss what this flaw is or did he not say?

I believe that it would be more correct to say they never intended for the Constitution to remain 'unchanged' for 200-years.

Unlike other documents that charter and delimit ruling powers, we (the people) have an unlimited role in the evolution of this living document. Within it's own structure lies the seeds for the removal of entrenched 'lordships' (as we see today). No such document will ever stand without resistance from the status quo lovers.

I don't believe this is true at all. The entire purpose for having the amendment process was to insure that the constitution could change. We don't need to rewrite it, we need to get back to the government that is laid out in the constitution. What we have today is anything but.

nj2day, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you're a mod. Your attempt at being one only makes this thread longer than it should be and breaks the flow of the page. If the mods have an issue with any of the posts, they will take care of it.

The constitution was made also to outline specific guidelines to the law making process.

The government has used this tool to alter our constitution. Bylaws and loop holes have been made to let other bills go in undetected. Thus the people losing rights.

I dont know what else to say other then I am disgusted with our Government, and even more so with Obama

I love your communication style...

"I will make a statement, then I will say your reply is against the rules."

Grow up.

You are completely comfortable modifying the greatest document ever written to fit your desires as they arise.

I believe your thinking is along the lines of, "We have grown past this document."

Fine.

When they decide that your thinking is wrong what document will protect you?

only sometimes hard work is rewarded, i know, been there, done that, hard work didn't help me. people got ahead of me because of their associations with people in power. this is the way in 95% of success stories, the other 5% got lucky, because there are still honest people in power that helped them or at least didn't try and derail them.

as evidence, i present those pillars of capitalism, the money men of wall street...their strength was in the fine art of b-llsh-t. and that "ART" my friends is the only true hard work.

and so with my experienced, but jaded outlook, i tend to look at each millionaire and ask myself "who did he screw to achieve such wealth"

"Apparently", huh? I love how people put that word before a statement that they really have no clue about... It ranks right up there with putting question marks after a dramatic thread title so they can say they were just "asking", not claiming a fact...

McCain Molests Children???

The truth is that Obama OPPOSES Reparations and always has.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes offering reparations to the descendants of slaves, putting him at odds with some black groups and leaders.

The man with a serious chance to become the nation's first black president argues that government should instead combat the legacy of slavery by improving schools, health care and the economy for all.

"I have said in the past _ and I'll repeat again _ that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed," the Illinois Democrat said recently.

So, no, FromAbove, he APPARENTLY opposes reparations.

Since some of you apparently didn't actually listen to the released tapes of Obama on the Supreme Court when talking about "civil rights", he stated that he was dissapointed that the court did not adress the matter of "distribution of wealth". He did not see any chances of the Supreme Court doing so and would have to be done by the legislative bodies.

Redistribution of wealth + civil rights = reparations in the back door

Really the constition would prove its abilities if we actually followed it , its a document designed to limit governnt and keep it out of people lives they made this document so that the country would not end up restricting freedom, and as you can see even with a document that clearly states many great points, its totally been ignored..

Lets take freedom of speech, she we can say anything we want but now to protest we need to have a permit and need to be in free speech zones, this is not what the founders meant by free speech, we dont have freespeech any longer its highly regulated..

the ammend ment that specifically says " the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." states it shal not be infringed, however today there are more laws onthe bookls about gun ownership its no where near what the founders states.. the even pre address this statement with the notion of why this right shall not be infringed"

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Realize that back them the militia was you and your neighbors protecting the freedom of your state ... the founders knew that every one should be armed and if that ever got infringed a government could easily oppress the people with no way for the people to fight back if needed.

The Constitions established limited government and were falling further and further from a limited government every day, now the federal government can spy on your without a warrant. This is forbid by the 4th amendment.

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

The constition set up the basis or a free society .. however if you have not notices were getting closer and closer to a socialist fashist state every day and further away from the ideals that founded and made this country so great in the past. Sure time changes things , however freedom is a idea that never dies.

And let us not forget that Hitler, Mosulini, Chevez, and Putin were all elected by the people on the pretense of a better change only to become dictators and fascists.

The Cinstitution is our defense from that. And Obama doesn't like that very much so it would seem. Hmmm...
