FirstEnergy Corp.'s Davis-Besse nuclear power plant near Toledo has been leaking radioactive water into plant property, possibly for some time.
On Wednesday, workers discovered a corroded, underground drain pipe leaking water containing tritium, a relatively short-lived isotope produced in the reactor.
They were excavating outside the reactor to look for a leak in a water line to the plant's fire protection system. The three-inch steel drain pipe takes water from a sump to a settling basin -- and eventually to Lake Erie.
