New Roswell Derived metal/fabric produced?

"Buckypaper" - Could this new nano-structured material be trickled down alien technology from the Roswell or other UFO crash recoveries? This very thin, yet stronger than steel material is redolent of the thin metal debris rancher Mac Brazel discovered strewn on his New Mexico property in 1947.

"The name is strange, and the material seems to possess otherworldly strength, but it's all very serious. Buckypaper is a new material composed of carbon nanotubes that promises to revolutionize composite materials. Stacking sheets of buckypaper together nets a material that's 500 times stronger than steel, yet 10 times lighter. Florida State University is working on making the material inexpensive to produce in large batches of ultra-strong sheets, and the possible applications are wide and varied. Airplanes, automobiles, household items, the possibilities are endless, though we'd be most interested to see buckypaper mature to the point where it can comprise a monocoque shell for an automobile. There are challenges to getting the nanotubes to arrange properly for high strength, and bonding something with such surface smoothness is also difficult, but the promise of a new wonder-material has built a lot of excitement and could one day replace carbon fiber as the exotic material of choice to both lighten and strengthen our cars at the same time." - Autoblog.com

That is really cool! Reverse technology rocks, if that is the case. if not then the person who invented/found it is really smart. I just hope they can produce it for us to use. Maybe the world wont end in dec 2012 we have so much left to discover.

I dont think you have to stack those sheets we see in the picture. I think that's a misunderstanding.

The nano tube are actually stacked microscopically so exactly what you see in the picture is actually already stacked. So you just need one to achieve those results which is even more incredible.

They can't even mass fabricate it yet, I'm doubting any reverse engineering.

It is made from buckyballs or C60, buckyballs are a particular arrangement of carbon (it can bond to four other carbon atoms) that result in a molecule the same shape as a football. Buckyballs have been around for almost the age of the universe and were first discovered by UK scientists in 1996. They were found in soot that had been zapped with electricity but can also be made via combustion of carbon rich compounds.

The strongest material on earth is diamond and this too is made from carbon, it is therefore unsurprising that other carbon compounds can show remarkable strength to weight rations. Diamond too has been around for almost the age of the universe and we have already incorporated it into materials for practical purposes far before Roswell. It is unsurprising to see new forms of carbon being incorporated into materials for its properties of strength (the article mentions carbon fibre another remarkable man-made material using carbon).

In my opinion this is just the results of scientific endeavour and not the results of a shadow government reverse engineering 'advanced' alien materials.

Every resource has been around since the age of the universe, harnessing any of it for various applications is another story.
