Bear found dumped at WCU with Obama signs

CULLOWHEE – A dead bear was found dumped this morning on the Western Carolina University campus, draped with a pair of Obama campaign signs, university police said.

Maintenance workers reported about 7:45 a.m. finding a 75-pound bear cub dumped at the roundabout near the Catamount statute at the entrance to campus, said Tom Johnson, chief of university police.

“It looked like it had been shot in the head as best we can tell. A couple of Obama campaign signs had been stapled together and stuck over its head,” Johnson said.

University police called in N.C. Wildlife Resources officials to remove the body and help in the investigation. Bear season is currently under way in Western North Carolina.

“This is certainly unacceptable,” Johnson said. “Someone was wanting to draw attention to the election. If we find out who they are, we’ll make sure they’ll get some attention themselves.”

Is this one of the first signs of hate crime against a possible Obama - Biden presidency?

Does this incident, though unrelated, shine favorably on the McCain-Palin campaign?

Our nation is sick. And as such we have had Governor Sarah Palin who has gone weeks linking Senator Barack Obama with terrorists. Playing politics of division saying that Obama does not see America the way that she does and some other Americans do. We have folks accusing General Colin Powell (Ret.) of endorsing Obama solely on the factor of the race of both men. We have seen reports of members at McCain-Palin rallies that have yelled, "Kill him", Terrorist", "Muslim", all in response to speeches that Senator John McCain and Palin have given.

And now we have dead animal, a bear cub that was shot in the head, expressing in effigy some violent intent towards the Obama - Biden campaign. Done so a day after Powell announced his endorsement of Obama for president.

Is our nation sick? Undoubtedly.

Will the violence escalate? That's up to us.

I think this warrants a bump because people should know about hunters that waste their catch. The Obama signs just make it worse and one has to wonder if this was a sort of death threat against Obama. Personally I think it is a couple of rednecks that had a little too much hooch and thought this was a really great idea. It's unfortunate that the actions of a few come to represent the many to some observers.

Great find op.....

I hardly think it would make much of a difference. This was obviously done by some radicals who don't want Obama in the White House. If anything this should "shine unfavorably" on for McCain's campaign. Hate was always part of this election but it was Palin who had it directed to Obama with her initial comments of him being friends with terrorism. McCain/Palin got what they wished for, a separation between both parties so vast that violence and threats against ones life is the only discourse of action. This all stems from us only getting the option two choose from this too party fraudulent system. Everything isn't black or white, where are our 3rd parties?

And now we have dead animal, a bear cub that was shot in the head, expressing in effigy some violent intent towards the Obama - Biden campaign. Yes it is sick but we are making changes for the better. The fact that you made this thread and me posting here and the feelings we are sharing at the moment give us some hope right?

The violence that proceeds this is up to us, yes but also up to the candidates. If they wish to play this mud-slinging game between themselves and get the mindless folks riled up who knows what could happen?

It's even worse in that, a cub is NOT a catch, it's not even permissable. Any real hunter should know that and respect it.

To the OP, yes it is absolutely a sick society that we've come to have to endure. Yet, we care so much about the Presidency? We should start turning the critical mindset's upon ourselves first. We want to straighten out the country and Government, maybe a little introspection is in order.

That was my first thoughts on this story; not for Obama but rather the cub.

There's some real he-men out there.

I was enraged the second I read the headline of this thread. Utterly livid, mouth dropping, just about to scream "how could they? Those monsters!"...and then I realised it said bear and not beer.

A bear CUB is not a catch it is illegal as all get out! Yes this is sick and its sad that the world does things like this.
I would think we would be more worried about the fact that some idiot is going around shooting baby bears!!!! As opposed to the idiotic message what ever it may be.

I hate poachers. It seems like whenever I encounter a non-hunter or some urban ignorant they react to me as if I were some monster because idiots like these are shaping peoples opinions about hunting. But then idiots in cities who shoot people for jewelry shape peoples opinions about guns too.

I dont know what to think about the Obama signs. That's just confusing.

Maybe the bear was going door to door harassing people trying to get them to vote for Obama and these hicks had enough? Thats really the only scenario I can imagine leading to this outcome. Damn political bears.

I think this country is a ticking time bomb. I am a Ron Paul supporter. I caught a young woman scratching out my bumper sticker with a car key.

When I confronted her, a young man with her got out of the car. He was 5'10'', about 20, white, wearing his hair in dreadlocks, and wearing a Rasta hat. I am 6'5'' and 270. I told her to get her *blanking* hands off my car. Her response, "Obama is going to win and you are racist." Her boyfriend called me a white supremacist and staggered toward with his hands out.
I put a hand up and started to shove him back and his girlfriend jumped between us and said, "Don't Stewart, you could kill him!" then she turned to me and said, "He's a black belt in Shorin Karate."
I just shrugged and called "911". Of course, they took off. The police said, "nothing could be done since no actual damage was done to the car."

On a side note, I have a CCW permit. I had my H&K MP .45 in my waistband. I am black belt in Judo (USJF), I am blue belt in BJJ, and a former amateur boxer with a record of 21-10-2. So, if the idiot thinks might makes right, I had that covered.

So, please spare me the McCain-Palin neo Nazi rhetoric. The hate is on all sides!

(Please note my good friend Ben is from Jamaica. We spoke about the Rasta hats at dinner one night. He thinks white kids or any kid wearing them that aren't practicing true Rasta are idiots.)

I believe the word is "trustafarian"

Idiots who deface yard signs/bumperstickers/etc. are stabbing themselves in the foot, whatever side they're on.

In addition, anyone who thinks someone is a "racist" because they support Ron Paul is awe-inspiringly uninformed

There are certainly idiots on all sides, however the Republicans have encouraged this kind of thing by slapping an "anti-American" label on anyone who doesn't support their candidate

Fortunately some others in the McCain camp have been telling the crazies where to stick it, I thought this video was funny:

McCain supporters throw a hateful idiot out - good for them.

Unfortunately, these are the people that the McCain/Palin ticket is drawing. Redneck racists. Wooo! Let yer true colors shine, boys, that we all may know your hearts!

Oh thats funny. I just watched it. Yea it makes no sense to me the way McCains campaign is ragging on Muslims when they have Muslim supporters. The Republicans have really lost their way. They do not by all means stand for what they used to.

And of course the actions of some drunken hunters will be immediately translated by the liberals among us into somehow being representative of the entire country.

I could run outside right now and hang an Obama effigy from a tree with a mock noose around its neck and I would be guaranteed to make the national news.

If you ask me, the number of incidents of this type are remarkably few in number.

Fair enough. If indeed the call of "Kill him" was proven false. The point is that the sentiment was implied simply by Sarah Palin saying, "Obama's been palling around with terrorists". Even if we count Ayers as a terrorist, which today he isn't, who are the other terrorists that Palin refers to? She says "terrorists". Anyway, the way that terrorists have been demonized and linked with Muslims in our country, it's not surprising that someone or some people would resort to a violent act in protest. Especially since the McCain-Palin campaign has painted a picture of Obama being associated with those demonized symbols.

Is the subject of the OP a result of the way the McCain-Palin campaign has been conducting business in recent weeks? Who knows? The thing is that it doesn't help to improve the atmosphere of the elections. It's another fear tactic that's clearly coming from the right. Who knows what it started and where it will end?

I think it is a good thing that most mainstream outlets are ignoring the story. Thereby reducing the chance of copycat incidents.

See, it's stuff like this that McCain and Palin are still doing to this day! that has me concerned.

In an interview with a St. Louis television station, John McCain was asked whether he was "proud" of a particularly caustic anti-Obama mailer sent out recently by the Republican National Committee. "Absolutely," McCain replied.

The front of the mailer shows the nose of a plane parked at an airport gate; in an apparent reference to the 9/11 attacks, the accompanying text reads, "Terrorists don't care who they hurt." Inside, the mailer claims that Barack Obama "thinks terrorists just need a good talking to," a gross distortion of his positions. It goes on to say, "Islamic extremists want our laws changed, our culture destroyed and our families converted. We don't. What is there to talk about?"

Finally, it concludes, "Barack Obama. Not who you think he is."
www.salon.com...

The McCain-Palin campaign shows no sign of stopping the insanity. I don't know how anybody could continue to respect McCain after this. His campaign and the RNC are playing with fire that they hope will consume Obama. If and when it backfires, defeat and cancer will not be the only things consuming McCain. He will have to deal with dishonor.

I would interpret the act as a threat against anyone who would go around campaigning for Obama. The fact that it was a cub implies it is aimed at the young people--especially WCU students--who are canvassing door to door. I certainly hope it was a drunken prank, as has been suggested, but knowing this part of western NC it could very well be serious.

It really bothers me, too, that it was a real bear cub rather than an effigy.

Being a conspiracy site, I will throw this one out.

What if it turns out to be an Obama supporter who tried to make the McCain folks look like racists and animal killers?

Now as far as the animal, it is just outright wrong.

An Area51, I would like to know your view on why you think this is a hate crime against Obama?

Don't think Obama was anywhere in the vicinity. If they had posted McCain signs would you also consider that to be a hate crime against McCain?

Just curious.
