Study traces AIDS virus origin to 100 years ago

NEW YORK -- The AIDS virus has been circulating among people for about 100 years, decades longer than scientists had thought, a new study suggests.
Genetic analysis pushes the estimated origin of HIV back to between 1884 and 1924, with a more focused estimate at 1908.

So much for the theory that the US developped this as a form of biological warfare.
The article mentions samples taken from the 1950s and 60s and reverse engineers the virus to try and figure out its origines.
Can we really extrapolate the genetic background
of a virus this way?
I'm no genetisist but I'm not convinced that the research complete. To many unkown factors, periods of dormancy for instance. Look at the H2N2 (Bird Flu) virus. They expected it to be at pandemic levels well before today (about 5 years ago), but it hasn't made that big jump to humans yet (yes, I know it has, but those were just little hops). Is their science really that reliable?

I guess this settles it, or maybe not.
