We haven't built one that high yet, and there'd be some real problems in building one that high.

he's right, that's why space shuttles need a bigger rocket for launch. It's for being able to get out of the gravity pull of earth. think about what will happen to the planes if earth's gravity would only be effective at max 300 m. then try to think about everything else above 300 m.

I see no reason to leave the shuttles in space as they are obsolete, and the way NASA operates it would cost more to convert them to space station components or orbiting satellites then to create something completely new.

Why bother with untested technologies when the technology is here now and companies like Scaled Composits are building space craft now.
