The US House of Representatives on Monday defeated a $700 billion financial sector emergency bailout plan, sending the already weakened Wall Street tumbling.
The House voted 228-205 against the plan, ignoring urgent pleas from President Bush and congressional leaders of both parties that the economy could nosedive into recession without it.
