Boston (MA) - Students at MIT participating in the annual MADMEC (Making And Designing Materials Engineering Contest) have devised a zero-input energy solution which allows solar panel arrays to track the sun's movement thereby increasing solar panel efficiency by 38% over stationary panels. The five-person team won top honors and a $10,000 prize for their invention.

Anything that increases power generation efficiency is a good thing in my book. Today's high tech culture needs all the power it can get. What I really love about this method is that it is controlled completely by the warming of the apparatus by the sun and that it requires no additional electronics to track it. Few parts means fewer things to break. A great fit for remote places where spare parts can be hard to come by.
