The US Defence Secretary has told Sky News that another Russian attack on Georgia once it has joined Nato would result in an American armed response.
US Defence Secretary

'We would stand by our commitments' says Robert Gates

Robert Gates told Sky's foreign affairs editor Tim Marshall that Nato's charter would require it.

"I have been a very strong proponent of the view that Nato is a military alliance not a talk shop," he said.

"Article five means what it says - so there is a commitment to go to the assistance of our allies if they are challenged.".

I guess this called the "Palin Doctrine"

The idiots on the hill are just itching to attack Russia for some reason. If not, why oh why are they all running around with their feathers unfurled screeching about retaliation for an attack on Georgia. You know, if you keep telling someone that you are going to kick their butts if they cross a line, whether they are trying to or not, sooner or later they are just going to jump headlong across the line and come up swinging.

I think a few of them have been watching too many rescreenings of Red Dawn and drooling at the thought of what they could create in that post-war America.

I think it is a psychological game they are playing. Recently Russia's market has crashed and one of the reason is that investors were pulling out due to concerns over Russia's involvement over Georgia. I think the US is upping the ante hoping to get more investors to pull out of Russian market in hopes that this forces Russia to get out of Georgia. I do believe it is a high risk gamble.
