I have read many posts by you and commend your strong standing in your beliefs. I do however find it sad how so many people still applaud/hope for more violence as a solution. History has proven this to be the norm, but one can hope that one day we will evolve to the point where we no longer need to kill as a solution but to resolve the issue that leads us to killing in the first place.

Idealistic....yes..... but if we don't hope for a better world, then this list of dead and the millions of more before are gone for no greater purpose.

We fight wars/conflicts to end tyranny and corruption just to give birth to a more deadly breed of narcissism.

Oh yeah i never heard it called that sorry havent been fallowing it too close. do you know of any documentation or any other story other than a Russian news site? And didnt Russia kinda start this.... i dont know but i'll find out. I did see were Georgia had to pull its troops outta iraq so they couldnt have been planning it.

I guess i got alot of reading to do... I'll get back to ya.

This looks like it could end up being a huge escalation. Russia was totally justified in defending it's people, and putting a stop to Georgia. Just look at that list - there's so many people under 21, most of them either killed by bm-21 rockets or artillery - innocent civilians being massacred. Now if you can't connect the dots on this one I feel sorry for you. The US and Israeli Special Forces were in there training with the Georgians in the months prior - not to mention giving them state of the art satellite technology (some of which they lost and is now in Russian hands), hundreds of tanks, oh and a few of those 133 million dollar fighter jets. I pray this doesn't escalate any more.

I saw John McCain speak on Fox about this. He talked about how georgians were dying. Talked about how the fledgling nation was developing and was a democracy, talked about how they were under pressure from the Ruskies. That it had Christianity for a long time and that Georgian soldiers fought along side Americans in the Iraq war.

I thought he was going to call them Americans, but no he surprised me. He said "Today we are all Georgians."

And I thought 'My god. America really believes that the Russians are the bad guys in this. That they are the aggressors. What would happen if the american people knew that the Russians were protecting their denizens in South Ossetia, that they were standing against a crime against humanity, a genocyde.'

Not only was Russia not the aggressor in this war, but they were getting the wrap for the whole thing. The media response was truly sickening.

Peace be with the dead and suffering S Ossetians.

Few interesting things to note:

Notice that the vast majority of people were buried in backyards and courtyards, and many have place of burial listed as "unknown". This conforms to what we have been hearing from the Russian side. I fear there may be many more dead and missing, of whose whereabouts no one simply knows.

Also note that many deaths occured on the Zarkskay road. It seems that the evacuees and refugees were under heavy fire there. Georgia intentionally carried out strikes along the road and shelled it.

A large number of the killed civilians were buried in Russian city of Vladikovkaz. That means that they were killed/wounded while evacuating from S Ossetia into Russia. I assume that the relatives took the dead with them, or that these people were heavily wounded and died in hospitals in Vladikavkaz.

While it was expected that the majority died from artillery, many also died from Georgian sniper fire. It appears that snipers were targeting anyone in the streets including civilians. These also must have been a fairly large amount of these snipers, which likely means that this was a throughly planned-out attack.

The Israeli guys were ex-mil contractors hired by Georgia.

The US troops were there for Immediate Response 08. They had just left the country when the fighting started. They were there to train the Georgian military on internal security.

Tanks? Fighters? Nope.

The Russians rolled up some Hummers that were owned by the US and were being shipped back to the States. And they captured a bunch of Bushmaster M4 that they then burned. (No worries about burning some Bushhamsters!!)

It is always a shame that lives are lost needlessly, this conflict was completely senseless and totally avoidable, there is no doubt, the Georgian army miscalculated, but it is my opinion, that it was the truth, that was the first casualty here.

You see,Both Russia and Georgia use the same ordinance, jet fighters and armor, there is even cases of Russian's steeling Georgian uniforms and weapons! (USA and Russian make) add the lawless rebels to the mix, the media censorship, the disinfo and the propaganda spin(yes, here at ATS) and the truth becomes the proverbial needle in a haystack!
We can speculate all day, but Untill we see an official, unbiased, trustworthy investigation into the matter, it is what it is.

According to a military source this is the amrs shipments to Georgia in the 4 years prior to this war (keep in mind that a good part of this is Soviet-era equipment, but it was financed by American military aid to Saakashvilli):

(in bold are shipments particularly crucial for this war)

disclosures about arms shipments to Georgia over 2004-2008:

10 UH-1-H helicopters and 230 wheeled vehicles (including 15 Hummers delivered by AM General, LLC - a firm whose financials I know as intimately as is possible...) from the U.S., with 15 UH-60 Blackhawks on tap; 7 152mm self-propelled guns, 16 ZSU-23 AAA guns, and 300 RPG-7s, 500 "Igla" MANPADS (man-portable air defense systems) and 150 "Kornet" and "Konkurs" ATGMs, 4 SU-25 attack aircraft, two light troop ships, 10 thousand crates of AK-47 assault rifles and RPG 22s plus ammunition, and 650 tons of ammunition from Bulgaria; 66 APCs, 1186 AMD-65 assault rifles, 44 PKM machine-guns, 600 82mm mortar rounds and an unspecified amount of 7.62mm ammunition from Hungary; 1 missile boat and 2 patrol ships plus 60 mortars from Greece; 14 thousand AK assault rifles from Lithuania; 60 RN-94 APCs, 2 UH-1 helicopters, one patrol ship, 2,500 MP5A1(k) SMGs, 1,500 G3 A3 assault rifles, 4,000 122mm rockets and 20,000 155mm artillery shells, plus a large amount of 7.62mm ammunition and hand grenades from Turkey; one multiple rocket launcher with 4 Mirage fighter aircraft, 2 missile boats and upwards of 60-65 "Mistrale" and "Mistrale-2" MANPADS from France; 120 T-54 or T-55 and 55 T-72 tanks, plus 24 "Dana" 152mm self-propelled artillery vehicles, 25 M-75 120mm mortars, 200 "Strela" MANPADs and more than 40 tons of ammunition of all types from the Czech Republic; 8 "Hermes-450" and "Skylark" unmanned recon aircraft from Israel; 45 120mm and 25 82mm mortars plus 500 262mm rockets from Bosnia & Herzegovina; 20 million 7.62mm bullets, plus 1,000 HEAT and 1,690 APFSDS tank shells and other ammunition from Serbia; 31 T-72s, 20 BTR-80s, 40 BMP-2s, 12 152mm "Akatsia" self-propelled artillery vehicles, 9 Mi-24, 2 Mi-8MT and 2 Mi-4 helicopters, 40 tons of ammunition, multiple other specialist vehicles and at least three "Buk"-M1-2 medium-range mobile SAM systems (basically a next-generation version of the SA-11) from the Ukraine.

I'm not including hundreds of radios, a SIM-3C-10 computer platoon training simulator from Estonia, tons of spare parts, assorted odds and ends like engineering equipment, and, of course, training. The U.S. alone still had 95 advisors and 130 "civilian contractors" in Georgia when things broke out.

militaryphotos.net...

That looks like quiet a few toys, especially for a small country. While very little of this is actually made by U.S. (besides the rifles and ammunition), you can get an idea where Georgia got the fund from.

What you have here is a Country that tripled the power of its military in just the last 4 years. Without this build-up, it is doubtful that Georgia would have been in a position to launch the attack the way it did.

And the training and advisors provided by U.S. shouldn't be undermined either.

Yeah there're a lot more victims there. The "weird" thing is that I haven't see a report from Georgia about dead civilians ... there were just dead soldiers from their side .... but WTH a lot people still think Russians started this. And about a week ago there was a news that european investigators found out that the Georgia was the agressor and that they had an order to kill civilians from Saakashvili.
The funny thing is that US with hundreds of spy sattelites saw f$%&ing terrorists in a caves but they didn't see what happened there in SO? ... there were a lot conflicts in this zone in last years so i bet they had few tens of sattelites to watch this area 24/7.
- small number of civilian death on georgia side and about 1500+ from SO
- there was provided evidence that Georgia planned the attack and had an order from Saakashvili to kill all the civilians they can - that makes him a war criminal
- so if there's an evidence that Georgia started this - Saakashvili lied to the world media and to the people. US politics lied to the US media and to the people there
How can anybody make a conclusion from these that Russia was an agressor and has to be punished?
And there's no democracy in Georgia. Saakashvili is a dictator. Just look what he made after he's in control of Georgia ... and look how he got there (google has all the answers). He made an order few times to kill people that were protesting against him. He fired all the people from the police and few other government jobs and putted there his own guys (WTF?), He ordered death of thousands of civilians since he's become the president.
But still ... "Russia is the agressor"? Since Putin was the president of Russia it had the biggest economy growth in history, it became a paradise for the investors and provided the profit for the country and all the investors all over the world. And just few years ago Bush was talking how he loves Putin (i allready thought he's gay
... he told it few hundred times) and look what changed since then ... Bush and his followers just started to see Russia like an enemy? The only thing that happened as i remember that Putin criticized the American agression against Iraq (like most of the US residents) ... so please can anybody tell me what is different with Russia now than few years ago?
Oh ... and sorry for my english

I've been watching these sad sob story threads (Georgia this, US that; blame the west!!!111) for a few weeks now.

It sickens me how maloy and manson are allowed to spread their BS propaganda unchallenged. There are no independent news sources in today's Russia. FACT. Read for yourself. I will provide links to real news which prove my point.
