Georgia plans to attack Abkhazia - Russia

www.russiatoday.com

Russia has information that Georgia is planning a military attack on Abkhazia to seize the capital Sukhumi, the Deputy Chief of the Russian General Staff, Colonel General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, told a media briefing in Moscow on Monday. He said that the military potential of Georgia was being restored for a repeated act of aggression.

"We have received serious intelligence information, and we shall discuss in detail the Georgian-Abkhazian direction on Tuesday," he said.

"The information is serious. If many media outlets still see Russia as the aggressor in the South Ossetian direction, the plan for seizing Sukhumi is so clear that we shall be able to prove that Georgia was the aggressor in the second direction as well," he added.

If true, which it may not be...
Think those US warships with "aid" was food and possibly weapons/security for this possible future attack to gain back their own territory?

Well, again, I don't think this looks too good either way.

1. The Russians are lying (for reasons unknown, worryingly).
2. The Georgians actually are planning an assault on Sukhumi.

There's surely no way Georgia is planning a military fight-back against Russia, though, right? I mean, it's probably not wise — unless Saakashvili has a penchant for destruction and would quite like to refer to the Georgian Republic solely in the past tense from now on.

Actually, knowing Saakashvili, the latter can't be completely ruled out.

Wasn't this posted in another thread already? There is a constant stream of new thread regarding this conflict everyday - and most of them talk about the same thing.

As far as assault on Abkhazia goes - not possible (guaranteed not possible 100% at this point). Abkhazian military is far better armed that S. Ossetia. At this point it may actually be more powerful than what remains of Georgian military - without even considering Russia's backup. Add to that that Sukhumi is a fortress. The city is surrounded by unpassable mountains from one side. On the other side along the sea, all the plains and roads on the border with Georgia are heavily mined. Plus Georgians were repelled from the Kodori Gorge already.

I don't know who is spreading this talk, but Abkhazia is as absolutely safe. Georgians would be decimated long before they reach Sukhumi.
