Came across this story at www.angelfire.com... and it is pretty interesting. It is a long 10 page story, but quite scary at places. Basically two spelunkers meet something strange in a cave. Has anyone read this before or have any other information on it? I would love to know what happened... I assume they were killed since there is no update on the site.

Never heard of that site before or their story. I do think it is highly suspicious that all of their photos turned out except for the ones we would want to see the most: The 'hieroglyphics.' Instead, he just created an image of them on what looks like P.C. Paint.

Not sure if it is significant that he never returned to the site. It says the last updates were made in 2001. So approximately seven years ago. Do websites last that long without someone to keep them registered? Even the free ones like that guy has? Not sure how that works but that is a pretty long time without someone having to do something to keep that site up.

I had some of the same feelings. To me this reminded me of those fake websites that were related to upcoming movies.... remember the Blair Witch Project's website? So many thought it was real.

As far as the website itself... that is an Angel website and I think they stay up for a while. I remember I had one and was surprised to see it there a year later after not doing anything with it.

That story has been around for quite a few years. It's just a story... I read it a few years ago, and thought it was a really good read. I think when I read it, at the end, the guys sister claimed she took over his website because he was still missing. Then I think I went another time and the author admitted it was just a story. Pretty sure..but in any case, it's not real.

Can you post the "exciting" part? After clicking through 10 or so pages I think I missed it.

That's a good read. I remember reading it 3 or 4 years ago when there was a buzz about whether it was fact or fiction.

Personally, I don't believe it's real but it did captivate me!

I did find this series of threads concerning this. Don't know if they are true or not.

Anyone find anything else relating to this?

Possibly. I looked through their FAQ's and found this:

Question: How long is my subscription to Angelfire good for?

Answer: As long as you maintain your subscription, by actively logging in, and keeping up to date with your pages, your subscription can last forever. Just be sure to login and work on your site at least once a month...

So according to that, he is still around.

I think you are right: It's just a good story.

I;m not sure if it's a hoax or not, but it is an amazing story. I would like to know if they ever saw the 'thing' in the cave. This is the kind of story that is so unbelievable that its almost believable.

I never read through the whole thing to be honest, but I've seen the link come up on many a web forum several times and the overall conclusion seems to be that it's just a story, albeit a pretty good one. I seem to remember on occasion people posting links to some proof of this but it's been a while and I can't recall much about it to be honest with you.

So yeah, good story but I think its relatively safe to assume it's not real.

I'm a spelunker and gosh, half the reason I go down there is in hope of bagging something, particularly a Grey if I find the right opening

Thanks for the find Alienmojo!

Read it, and must say, Stephen King eat your heart out.

That was an awesome story as people above have stated. It did sound a bit too well written to me, but I enjoyed every minute of it!

Thanks Omen. I quite agree and that was the first thing that made me doubt the story... was the fact that it was so well written. Especially when he says its been like 2 hours since the cave and here he is writing so incredibly well.

...but like you said it was a great read anyways and worth my time I thought, real or not.

OMG its Ted the Caver! this is a classic Urban Legend!

One of the best I have ever read. I do believe based on details from the original website it appeared on and dates that it was deemed a hoax but it was still an excellent story.

still gets a 10 in my suspense book.

BTW this has been discussed here in depth before check out these threads.

Well, I'm hooked so I've got to read the whole darned thing now (I'm already on page 6).

BUT, I have to point out that the writer makes a very common mistake in fictional writing that pretty much casts doubt on at least what he is claiming to have recorded versus recalled. The "journal" entries repeatedly skip between contemporary telling to looking back. I'm sorry, but you can't be on page 4 of a "real-time" journal entry and foreshadow the excitement to come by saying "we had no idea what we would find" (that's paraphrased, but same concept).

So the white text was NOT written close to the actual events, irrespective of what the writer tries to make us believe.

Now I gotta go finish reading the story!

OMG! That was loads of fun. I loved the way he ended it.

Blair Witch goes deep!!!

Followed some of the links provided indicating that it is a fictionalized version of a real cave exploration, (with real pictures of the cave, author Ted, and buddy Brad), written deliberately as a cliffhanger (sorry about the pun) much the same as the Blair Witch (esp. given the author's reference to it) to ramp up the suspense, and it IS quite well written, great story. Also have to point out that it has lifted several plot elements from HP Lovecraft, from 'Dagon' , 'The Lurking Fear', and 'The Statement of Randolph Carter', to name a few that I picked up on and were able to check, with the themes of consciously being drawn back to the place harboring the as-yet-unseen underground demon. Again, though, the story is great, creepy, a lot of fun.
