Armed 85-year-old woman makes intruder call cops

news.yahoo.com

POINT MARION, Pa. – An 85-year-old woman boldly went for her gun and busted a would-be burglar inside her home, then forced him to call police while she kept him in her sights, police said. "I just walked right on past him to the bedroom and got my gun," Leda Smith said.

Smith heard someone break into her home Monday afternoon and grabbed the .22-caliber revolver she had been keeping by her bed since a neighbor's home was burglarized a few weeks ago.

AWESOME!!!! THIS is why I always jump when Momma says jump! If more people just stayed calm, kept their head and dealt with the given situation using logic and guile, maybe we won't be seen as weak and potential victims anymore.

Right on G-Ma!

See now if she had pointed a sling shot or a knife, we would be reading about a badly beaten or dead elderly woman in the news today.

I am not an advocate of violence, but:
"you can get more with a kind word and a gun, than just a kind word"

We need guns in the modern world to combat modern criminals.

Hee hee heeeeee. I'd given a thousand bucks to see granny holding a luger at the scumbag making him call 911 while he was wetting himself.
There is Justice.

lol- indeed he did. Give him both an OWNED and FAIL badge immediately. He has earned it.

On a personal note, I hope he wet himself.

I was just reading this story and was going to make a thread about it myself. You beat me to it.

I absolutley love this. Hopefully this kid will think twice if he ever considers trying to burglarize another house.

Making this kid call the cops on him self is not only a good way to teach him a lesson, its also funny as hell

Good going Grandma!

It is a good story - and no one got hurt, and I would say that if she wasn't armed that she probably would've had the pulp beaten out of her by the coward.

Although.. arming everyone is a band aid solution to the criminal problem. The kid was only 17 - where the hell is his parents? He might've known better with some discipline at home. Of course there'll always be criminals, but look at what makes a criminal and reduce their numbers before arming everyone to the hilt.

But what we want and reality aren't always the same, so 'till then, good on granny.

Wow, how do you make statements like this with an avatar with King and Gandhi???

This is a really cool story! Good job to this woman for not taking any crap. Also my hat off to her for using her gun yet refraining from KILLING the thief! Texas could learn a lesson from this.

I personally think that an 85 year-old woman is the ONLY type of person with the inheirant quality of restraint. How many of the gun advocates on this board wouldn't have just shot the guy in the name of Gun Rights? (With a heavy helping of "Home Defense")
Again, right on Super-Granny!

After a miserable day at work, reading this article made my day. Thank you for sharing.

On topic though, this is the best example of justice I've seen in a while. I'm very proud of this woman for not becoming another victim and the way she handled herself was perfect.

Which brings up a question. Why is it that an 85 year old woman who is clearly in a situation where her life could be at risk can show more restraint than certain police officers who are obviously younger and in a better position to defend themselves?

So are you saying that EVERYONE from texas would have shot him? Im aware that there was a case in Texas where a guy shot and killed people breaking into his neighbors house , but that one guy does not represent all of Texas.

To assume that 2.15 million people would all handle that situation exactly like that one guy did, is not wise and largely absurd.

While im aware that there are lots of people who would shoot first and ask questions later, I know from personal experience that not every one in texas would shoot.

I myself am born and raised right here in the great state of Texas. My house has been broken into, and I do hae a gun. I didnt shoot him. I chased him off, but didnt shoot.

My grandfather on my mom's side who was also born and raised in Texas, had his house broken into. He happened to be in his bed room when some one started to crawl through the window. He ran in the other room grabbed his gun, came back and said "turn around and get back outside." the guy left with out a single shot fired.

Anyway, before I get way off topic, let me just say again, I think this lady handled this situation perfectly. She was calm, cool, and collected. She made him call the cops on himself and she should be proud. Thanks to her no one was hurt. Good going Grandma!

LOL.

That is awesome! Ten Points for Grandma - I hope I'm that stern when I'm 85.

I'm just picturing in my head, the possible scenarios and words exchanged between her and the guy....

"Okay, now be a nice young man and pick up the phone. Dial 911, and you tell them what you've done. Sit right there, and don't test me mister!"

Oh I love it.

Now this lady has got the right idea. If an 85 year old woman can stand up for herself then the rest of us should do the same.

Good goin gramma, my new hero!

I am under the firm impression that had either of these men been behind cover as they are fired upon, they would most definetly utilize any firearms on hand for the preservation of their life. Instead they were both shot and killed by surprise.

Good men need to understand evil men will not take a break from doing bad and capitalize on their beliefs to sneak attack and destroy the symbols of hope. That is why any good leader should be personally armed, especially back in that day when they had so many enemies.

Same problem with Jesus. Again, I am no Christian (declare no single faith as my own, I respect and agree with the positive aspects of all faiths), but I believe in respect to human rights, equality without prejudice, and good morals. In disagreement with them however, I believe that a man should take steps to safegaurd his personal well being in the battle against evil, as the enemy will take any cheap shot possible to eliminate the symbols of hope quickly as possible.

I hope that clarifies my position. I dont understand why people assume that personal belief and support for Good men with positive messages throughout time should mean not belief in self-defense/preservation.
