Im posting this because it should be known this can happen to anyone. My wife was robbed today in broad daylight walking into the Broward County Health Dept. The two walked up to my wife and mother in law and took both of their purses. Despite screams and people just looking and doing nothing not even calling the police the scum got away. My kids watched in horror for they did not know if these people were going to harm them. If you dont think this can happen to you it can. I put this here because as the economy continues to get worse this is going to be happening more often. I strongly urge people to arm themselves. the second amendment is there for a reason. She does not have a gun, I do but I was not there. She is going to get a gun now and learn to shoot it. In all no one was harmed but we lost a lot of cash and all sorts of other personal belongings.

I dont see things getting any better and the police acted like they could care less. The people who just stood there and watched as far as Im concerned are part of this. Not even because they should of stepped in but they could of at least called the cops. No one is going to look out for us people so please arm yourselves. Our survival depends on it. Especially as the economy gets worse.

Its going to get alot worse sooner rather than later... I totally 100% agree with you. I am happy your wife and family were unharmed, but its a wake up call for many many people.

Those that stood by? ~~~^&*&^

They make it worse - the sheep stand in fear as the wolves plunder at will.

Glad your wifes getting a shooter. Next time they can go to the grave.

wow that's scary, especially since I live in Broward county too.

I do carry a stun gun in my car, mace in my purse, and recently had cameras installed around my property after the neighbors two houses down got their house burglarized.

Sorry to hear that

I think it was in the movie se7en "when some one needs help you don't yell rape or help cause no one comes you yell fire that way people do help"

Yet I did hear that before I saw the movie

Reminds me of a video what was up about a woman in trouble and only thing
people around her did was take picts and video with their phones

sad world
again I am sorry

Its sad because my daughter walked in the door and shes not that old she says "dad we are poor because mommy got robbed" So needless to say I didnt understand what she was saying till i got the news. GOD I wish I was there. I would not have hesitated to put a bullet in each one. Yes things are going to get worse I fear. Not because it happened to me (because I have been saying this for a long time on this site) but because as people get more and more hungry this is what they are going to do. Next time they may have guns or knives.

Yeah I know you live down here. My wife also like you (or at least I think you) is a little Indian hotty. An easy target I guess.

I am saddened this happened to your family.

It is so much scarier to think that many could just stand by and watch. A news story ran a couple of days ago where a man chased down a robber in a store and "got him" and held him until the police arrived, a real hero in my opinion.

People prey on each other in such a predatory way it is just disgusting.

My daughter actually had her purse stolen from her at gunpoint as she got out of her car a few months ago with her two small children sitting in the car waiting to get out. It is traumatizing for all involved, except for the perpetrators.

I wish things would get better.

And then there are the stories you see here on ATS where people get involved but get killed for helping because they dont have guns. I think more people need to carry plain and simple as that. My wife was lucky they werent brandishing guns but who knows maybe it was her lucky day. I dont see things getting better anytime soon.

If your wive had a gun and had shot them, would things be any better? I don't know what the laws are like there, but here if you shoot somebody, even in self defense if they break into your house, you're more likely to go to jail than they are.

Also what if they took the gun and used it against her?

Last winter I was coming back on the train from a weekend climbing when i saw this women getting robbed at knife point (craft knife size stanley blade).

Do you know how much trouble I got into for burying the business end of an ice axe into his hand?

I will help out, but I will also know that here in the UK you get shafted by the Police for doing so.

As they say; better to be tried by twelve good and true than carried by six one last time.

Thats the big risk right there. Do you risk that these people arent going to kill you and your family? Sorry but not mine. I only have one family and if I have to risk going to jail to save them then so be it. As far as taking the gun and using it against her when you take a gun out you better intend on using it. Dont worry I will teach her everything.

Well last Sunday me and my girl went out to town shopping and in some store we were waiting in a queue. This asian guy had his hand in my girls bag!! I didn't even know until we got out and she said she was scared he'd hurt her or something. Man I looked for that punk for about 20 minutes, luckily he never took anything but I was ready to take his head off.

I hate people who feel the need to fudge other peoples day up.

getting robbed sucks, but count your blessings. And send a prayer or good energy to the person/s who stole from your wife.

sounds crazy, but I got robbed a year and a half ago and dude shot me point blank in the lung.
I had been robbed before many times by blacks and the previous times I cursed them and always harbored negative energy towards them.

However, the black dude who shot and robbed me got different treatment.
While slowly loosing consciousness and blood I prayed for homeboy because I knew that karma would pay him back. I asked the higher cosmic forces to take it easy on him, because I figured I was a dead man.

Everything happens for a reason, and this event in your life may seemingly be a negative one, but who knows what may come of it.

All I can suggest is to remain positive and be glad your wife is still alive and well.

The economy might be crumbling but trust me, things aren't as bad as they seem.

peace and positivity

It goes to show that ppl with purses or wallets should carry a decoy or put their main stuff not in the purse or wallet they'd give up at robbery point.

And yeah, those ppl who did nothing prolly went home and talked about it to their family and friends rather than the police. But you have to understand that now a days ppl dont want anything to do with the police. They are on a strict time and prolly wouldnt want to make a statement downtown out the way of their normal path.

The least ppl standing by could do record with a cell phone, get the victims phone number so to tell em when they and how they can give them the video if they dont want anything to do with the police nor want to go way out the way.

Plus, if ppl really want to make it so there would be no robbers they'd make sure jobs are created that pay well all over. PPL too busy trying to keep a guy down by allowing criminal records to have to be stated on job apps. If ppl wont wake up to know the released criminal did their bid to stop punishing them out in the world, then those ppl shouldnt not expect to reap what they sown or didnt get unsown.

I'm so sorry this happened to your wife and MIL; Thank God they were not injured, and so you all can gain the lesson without a permanent aftereffect. Wait...... that didn't sound right.... what I mean is that, in spite of the psychological trauma, you are able to gain knowledge from the situation. I feel it...... it's such a visceral thing having your loved one's life endangered.

Also what if they took the gun and used it against her?
I don't mean to assail your point of view, Yarcofin, but if she had been trained and armed, it wouldn't have necessarily have required a shot to be fired, however if she did shoot and wound/kill an assailant, it would've been to prevent an attack, and that's a legally defensible situation, given that her training allowed her to be legally armed.

I recall many years ago..... more than 30.... I was walking down Market STreet in San Francisco, and I heard a scream. I turned and saw a HUGE (to me) man running toward me, carrying a purse. It was obvious in an instant what had happened. Everyone parted to allow the cursing man to pass unimpeded. I moved toward his path as he approached, and he snarled a string of curses at me, waving a short-bladed knife. I drew back, as others had done, and then, fool I was, drove into him as he crossed me, hitting him in the hip with my shoulder. He tried to rake me with the knife, and succeeded in opening a 3-stitch wound in the junction of my neck and left shoulder. My effort propelled the larger man into traffic, and he was struck by a small car travelling about 15 mph, which resulted in a broken pelvis, broken ribs, arm, and internal injuries.

Ambulance and police were called, and the woman gratefully received her returned purse. She waited to give her report to the police, which I appreciated. NOBODY ELSE there "saw" anything, except one local shop owner, who happened to look up from the interior of the store.

Two months later, I was charged with aggrivated assault and was in court. To their credit, the S.F. police department scoured the neighborhood to attempt to get witnesses, and they did so from the moment they arrived on scene. I was acquitted, but it was a costly event, insofar as lost work and mental stress. I expected the perp after that, and shortly thereafter armed myself. Carrying a gun changes the way you do everything -- What you wear, how you move, how you quell your natural reactions to conflict.

My wife (this was now ten years after)...... after I trained her,[the nature of] her job allowed[her to qualify for and acquire] a concealed weapons permit. She bought a Gloria LeMaster purse. It is a well-made thing, leather, with aircraft aluminum woven into the strap, to prevent it being cut. At the end of the purse, where the seam is, there was a velcro closure. Within was a custom holster for her firearm that was also velcroed into place, for quick recovery. She chose a Baretta .22. Shortly after that, she switched to my Seecamp .32 mag, as it was a quicker draw (no sights to hang up).

It changes things being armed. There is a higher requirement legally to ignore provocation, but buddy, for my money, it was the best choice both of us ever made.

Fast forward a few more years. I was heading toward Redding, just past Red Bluff, on Highway 5, to work out some problems on one of my jobs. I hear on the radio there has been a multiple shooting at an address in S.F. that is the same as my Bride's. Pulled over, called her, got voicemail. Same goes for her boss, and other coworkers. Called the coffee shop, even, no dice. I turned around, running her 240Z at well above the speed limit. Got pulled over near Sacramento, got a HP escort to the GG bridge. Bridge and Van Ness was choked and I RAN to her location, flashed a gov. badge and got inside the control area and saw her outside. Radio had gotten the address wrong, it was next door, six dead. All the while I was feeling hopeful, knowing that she was armed, trained, and most of all -- smarter than hell -- streetsmart.

Sorry for the long rant and trip down memory lane. Just brings back a lot of things, and I know you'll make this opportunity affect a positive change in your lives, OP.

All best

Sorry to hear about your misfortune MBU, but I'm glad your wife and family are all okay. It's certainly a sign of the times when things like this start happening in broad daylight. Normally the cockroaches wait till it's dark to come out, so these guys must have been really desperate to take such a big chance.

Does the Health Department have any surveillance cameras? Maybe they got their picture taken without realizing it..

People today are so apathetic. They watch others being victimized, and refuse to lift a finger to assist them. Next time though, it might be them, and they'll realize the folly of their indifference towards the suffering of others. I hope they catch these bastards and put them away for a long time.

People can blame these type of crimes on being poor, but that's a cop out. People commit crimes like this because they have no respect or regard for the rights of others. I've been hungry and desperate many times in my life, but I never robbed anyone. My family at least taught me that much.

I hope you'll encourage your family to talk about what happened, and develop a plan on how to respond should it ever happen again.

Thanks LLoyd and the others. Yeah we have talked with the kids. They are young so maybe it didnt affect them much. As far as plans in the future like I said Im getting my wife a gun.
I know its not the only answer but as times get harder people will get more desperate.

I too am terribly sorry this has happened to your family mybigunit
this is horrible to hear of and it really makes me angry to read.

I don't come from a place where muggings/robbings occur often but I know that one way to keep yourself out of harm's way in this regard is quite simple - don't carry a purse.
I rarely do anymore, I simply hold onto my keys and tuck money/ID in a pocket and feel a lot safer I must say.

Ladies everywhere should seriously consider this because with times as tough as they are, and getting worse, nobody's safe anywhere anymore.

Bless.

I'm sorry for what happened to your family. I'm very shocked nobody did anything to stop this happening.

What concerns me most about this sort of thing is how can these people actually look at themselves in the mirror and be happy with what they see. I know for a fact, if I ever did anything like this, which I know I definately will not, I wouldn't be able to live with myself. I hope these people feel like their souls are being tortured for what they do to innocent people. I bet my right arm these arse-holes wouldn't dare do it to somebody "their own size" (I'm not saying women are any less than men, but you know what I mean).

When I'm out and about, I hardly ever carry more than £50 on me. Where I live the majority of people who would do this sort of stuff are around 15 - 20 years old. If they dared to take my wallet, they better know how to run fast.

I hate to say it but I'm really starting to believe that criminals who steal should have their hands cut off.

Seriously women should not carry purses when out doing business like this, it just makes them a target. I have a small leather hip pack that would have to be cut off to get it from me in a hurry.
