Well, there seem to be mixed reports coming out of the region. However, I think we dodged a bullet on this one. So everyone let out a sigh of relief as this one seems to be pretty much over with

Wait, wasn't this conflict supposed to be the catalyst for WWWIII? Damn, looks like the doom and gloom stressbags will have to wait a while longer.

Russia is full of it.

They will say what they need to say to stall the possibly of our military involvement until they have accomplished their goals, and at this rate it won't take long.

Russia is still dropping bombs as we speak.

Sorry for the one liner, but let me ask this:

When has Russia ever been truthful?

Exactly, and remember to trust the French.

Listen, Russia is calling Georgia's President a terrorist, and saying its a war on terror. Now they are justifying the situation, I have a hard time believing they are just going to retreat now they have pushed near the Capital.

They are going to keep pushing...

As long as no more Russian planes go down and that nutjob Saakashvili doesn't shell Ossetia again I think the shaky peace will hold.

Anymore Russian jets go down though and you can forget about Putin restraining the Russian army anymore.

Russia is maintaining it's presence in Ossetia and Abkhazia and apart from a few odd numbers of vehicles, there are no Russian boots in Georgian territory. Seems to like Russia wants to keep this as contained and marginalised as possible, so as not to get the West involved.

I would say they have every right to march on Tbilisi and overthrow that Western-backed puppet but of course it would escalate this conflict into unprecedented levels and then NATO/US would have some real bearing to step in and support Georgia.

And there's no way Putin's risking war with the West over Saakashvili and his bullsh*t territories.

Hitler did more or less the same with Czek and Poland.

We know how that turned out

I like how all the threads about how WW3 was about to break out get hundreds of replies, but when news of the conflict resolving comes people don't want to talk about it. On to the next doom and gloom thread...

I agree 100% and have been saying all along that russia isnt going to invade. It doesnt make sense. The instability in the region will continue to weaken georgia politically. That is what russia wants. The president of Georgia has promised things to his people that he cant do and very soon you will see how fickle people can really get. The president of Georgia is done for, especially after this debacle(sp?), so what motive does russia have?

Its much smarter to wait for Georgia to fall, so that the instability in the region can allow for russia to possibly set up a puppet government.

I i don't know how to use quotes and links from other and posts yet, but NATO has said Russian aggression in Georgia will not stop them from becoming a member of NATO.

Yes, but the fact the president ran big on the platform of getting the broken off regions like South Ossetia back under Georgian control will certainly damage his standing. Furthermore, its not even certain Georgia will find its place in NATO because pressures on europian nations from russia. The US isnt the sole decider in who gets to join NATO.

It can't become unstable, it already is unstable and has been for a couple decades now. Read up on the history of the region between the collapse of the USSR and now. Furthermore, Georgia has been slowly weakening as a result of this instability. It is unstable because you have break away governments attempting to gain independence that is recognized among the international community, and they have russias backing.

The region is unstable, russia wants the georgian president gone, and the president isnt going to be able to make good on the promises he made. I would bet that georgia will become a puppet government within the next 5 years.

i agree with some of your points but to clarify my opinion, i don't think Georgia will "fall" as you say, and the region(not in Georgia) will become destabilized. period

Just to name a few...

When they Reported they had Taken Berlin.
When they put a man in space...
When they had sputnik fly over us...

Russians aren't weak people...

And...I like how all the threads about how WW3 was about to break out get hundreds of replies, but when news of the conflict resolving comes people don't want to talk about it. On to the next doom and gloom thread...

Well, considering this news has been making the rounds for about 16+ hours now... people know, and have already posted about it...

Information gathering while a conflict is raging, is diffrent then talking about a cease-fire...
