TBLISI, Georgia (CNN) -- Georgia's parliament Saturday approved a request by President Mikhail Saakashvili's to impose a "state of war," as the conflict between Georgia and Russia escalated, Georgian officials said.
Saakashvili accused Russia of launching an unprovoked full-scale military attack against his country, including targeting civilian homes, while Russian officials insist their troops were protecting people from Georgia's attacks on South Ossetia, a breakaway Georgian region that borders Russia.

Russia's Interfax news agency said the death toll was at least 2,000 killed in the capital of South Ossetia and claimed the city has been destroyed

You think that this could be another case of the Russians biting off more than they can chew??

It's only more than they can chew if NATO backs Georgia.

Problem is, NATO still doesn't completely recognize Georgia officially yet.

If NATO doesn't back Georgia, then Georgia is about to become another Russian territory.

Ah well, that's what the northern provinces wanted anyways.
Too bad this has to be done with bloodshed.

russian people are misinformed about the terrible war in Georgia. They are made to go as soldiers and fight in the battle against Georgian people. The russian information sites are spreading lies and deteriorating the conflict. Nothing is the price for the lives of innocent people. Peacefull citizens are shot. This kind of cruelty has not happened for past years. Russia ! Why can not you satisfy with the huge lands you have???!! Why do not you stop killing innocent people??? !! Who takes the responsibility for all the blood in these small land.

Other countries are SCARED!! FRIGHTENED!! They are afraid of Russia. But they do not realise that their time will come soon after Georgia. THIS WAR has to be stopped!! The world invader has to be stopped!!!!!!!!!
In these minutes it is killing the peacefull citizens.. Somebody ! please stop the war

It has a huge potential to spark a world war.

The US and NATO are in talks about what to do regarding Georgia. If NATO joins Georgia in this war, effectively it places the Russian Federation at war with NATO.

Line up the rest of the players around the world, and the number of countries who are supplied and assisted by Russia, and it could spell another world war.

You'll find propaganda in every war. Look at the States when they started their recent war. Look at every war in history, you have to make sure the people back the war in order for the war to continue.

Not saying it's a war worth fighting, in fact, I believe both the Russians and the Georgians are acting pretty foolishly in this matter.

The Russians are there to defend the Georgian separatists.
The Georgian military is there to defend the Georgian loyalists.

Both sides are racking up civilian deaths. It's a civil war backed by foreign parties. Hence, you're going to have civilian deaths.

As for intentional civilian deaths, the Georgians did their share by leveling a city with those launchers.

Sorry, I just do not see how this could spark a world war.

More of a minor regional conflict, it could escalate but I can't see how it will be a factor in a potential global war.

Though it is a great diversion for Russian military assets whilst Israel launches a US supported attack on Iran.

wow , thats funny - who would have thought of the georgian riot police forcing men in there 20`s into lorries and dragging them into the war - all the video`s showing this.

and the people of S.Osse who applied for russian passprots and to be citizens - but obviously they didn`t want that huh
