Don't know if this was posted before, since I never saw a pic of the new boat posted here. So here it is.

It looks similar to the Russian Deltas. For some reason when the U.S. Navy built the first ballistic missile submarine it didn't look that crude or have a huge hump like the Russians' or the new Chinese one.

I meant really really huge. Almost to the point of climbing to the sail from the hump section without the assistance of a ladder.

Yep, I'm sure the Chinese would like to have something like this...

Heres Russia's new ballistic missile submarine. Still has a hump, but its an improvement over the old Deltas.

I saw this on the TV the other day, if you have google earth go to 18 12'10.47"N 109 41'41.09"E and you will see the entrance to the Chinese new underground sub base capable of housing up to 20 subs.

If you look around the rest of this base you will see two 950 meter piers and three smaller ones would be enough to accommodate two carrier strike groups or amphibious assault ships.

EDIT
Here is a little linky if you don't have GE

The reason why it has a huge hump is because it was developed from the smaller SSN and hence the missile tubes look awkward on the submarine

Simply by looking at it the Chinese sub does look significantly smaller than say, an Ohio Class boomer. Which as you pointed out would explain why the hump on the back is so distinguished on the submarine, smaller structure.

Like taking a dual 10 inch gun and fitting it to a destroyer.

Shattered OUT...

This new Chinese "boomer" is probably the worst looking submarine in service but its more of a stop-gap measure to increase Chinas defense capability with the fact that it has a 8000km SLBM. It can hide near the Chinese coast and cover most areas of America so it probably doesn't need to be capable as it should be. There is talk of new classes of Submarines in design because this class has not meet the expectations of the Chinese navy. Like the rest of Chinas navy it will most likey get replaced sooner rather than later as China tinkers with new military equipment. China is a military in transaction so improvement will come very fast until China finds a platform it can build its military on

eg

Type-98>Type-99Gai>Type-99Gi
Type-51B>Type-52B/C
Type-54>Type-54A
Song>Kilo>Yuan

There is alot more but these are the one which come to mind

Good explanation, the George Washington was also originally an attack sub converted to launch ballistic missile subs. Course when I saw the new generation Chinese boat, I was expecting a lost less...hump.
