Meanwhile, there the US clashed with Russia at the United Nations Security Council, accusing it of seeking "regime change" in Georgia.

What really incenses me about all this is that the current president of Georgia was basically installed by the CIA. (Rose revolution) And this president now has the blood of countless South Ossetians from genocidal activities with questionable CIA involvement?

Oh yea.. don't forget about the Caspean oil and gas lines that run through Georgia.. This will not make much sense until you put that into the equation.

LATEST DEVELOPMENT:

Georgian and Russian sides have agreed to cease use of aircraft in the conflict zone, however the "zone" does not include Tskhinvalli. This likely means that Russian (since they have partial air superiority) have agreed not to stage any more air strikes within Georgia, but reserve the right to defend Tskhinvalli if necessary.

Since Russia mostly has air superiority, it appears to be showing willingness to move towards peace. Also it is good to see that the two sides are finally communicating.

The article also mentions that the Russian troops have stopped advancing after they have secured a 12 kilometer safety zone around what I presume is Tskhinvalli. This is what might have accounted for the Russian advances further from Tskhinvalli. Still no report of any Russian armor in Gori - so it appears that they have stopped.

What does Saakashvili mean by ''The task of cleaning"?

Interesting. He likely means to translate the Russian word "zachistka", which could mean cleaning out and uprooting of all opposition. What he mean by that beyond that is anyone's guess.

Well we're sorry for your people that you're caught up in this mess. Seriously. But the real perpetrator is your president, who started the whole thing. Russia defended South Ossetia since they were under ethnic cleansing.

If I were you, I would organise manifestations and walk on the parlement to overthrow that goon and this way end the war so Russia can go back to it's country and the killing of people stop.

There's a press conference going on right now with a spokesman from INTERFAX and some military guy from Russia. (High ranking, but forgot exact rank and name.)

Ironic that when all the theorist where screaming war in the middle east is about oil. That the governments and media of the world shot us down in flames, with our far fetched theories.
Now Georgia and Russia are at arms, and we in Europe are being told that it could effect out fuel supply as the main throughfare for oil into Europe is via Georgia, so you can be sure if this escalates we will be sold on the need for war, because of the need for fuel.
So instead of buying into the crap the media feed us sit down for peace, and under no circumstance stand for war.

No need for apologies, there are a few threads about the Georgian situation already that started with specific things ''shot down planes '' ''asks for help'' but then turned into general ''war report'' threads, they are quite chaotic as well, info that has been given on page 2 is posted on page 6 again by people who think they're making a new contribution.

Sit down for peace.. sure, but Russia doesn't feel much for backing down until Georgia backs down. And Georgia doesn't seem wanting to be backing down atm, though the signed cease-fire does mean *something* at least.

Question is, how real is this cease-fire and how long will it hold?

Russian generals are reported in saying the peace enforcement is nearly complete.

It happens very rarely, but for once I agree with Cheney. I do believe the the ''peace enforcement'' is anything but nearly complete. The Russians also claimed to stop bombarding with planes yesterday. This night and morning heavy bombardments have been reported all over Georgia.
