Who knows right?

Well here in between 9-10 hours they're firing up the LHC according to LHCcountdown.com, unfortunately the countdown website has been down, probably from overwhelming traffic for the last several hours.

As we move into the day the olympics will be running in full swing, and with all the media coverage what a great time to bring the world together with a global catastrophe, who needs a terrorist attack when we can have a blackhole?

For a little more on the LHC visit

cosmicvariance.com...

and use google our best friend.

Personally I think we're safe but many are concerned with the day of tomorrow, so sit back and watch the Olympics, enjoy your personal screening of the end of the world, brought to you in part by the people of Earth.

What's with the 888 threads?

Well I hope I'm warped to another world tomorrow.

I know, thats why I posted, I've read through several none with serious concerns, so I figured I'd give everyone something t feed their ulcers with.

Here it is people, the LHC has had several law suits against it trying to shut it down to "Prevent the end of the world," will we be the downfall of ourselves through peace not war, how Ironic!

Our technology shall destroy us, not our bombs, but the stuff to help better man! The risk we have to take to find the ever evasive Higgs Boson could be the risk that destroys us all with no word from the people!

I just noticed that the last 3 out of 4 threads are about 8-8-8, and they're all from different posters. This is definately going to be a hot topic today, and tomorrow their will probably be lots of people shouting, "See, I told you nothing was going to happen!"

Something will happen regardless, whether the world ends, something blows up, or everyones fine, a great scientific discovery will be made, it will change the world as we know it. Particles collided at 99.9999% the speed of light, this will be one of the greatest days of this century, Im very excited even if the consequences prove to be as bad as they may be.

as it goes with science, we don't know till we find out. i really think the human race is getting a little too paranoid about their existance. what would it really matter if it did all come to an end tomorrow, i mean really? we havn't even found our spot in the universe yet, or even know what the universe is, how it works, why its here, how big it is, what it can do, and what we can do with it. so i say yay to the LHC because if we don't know yet, we will find out.

They've been running smaller scale tests with the LHC for months, they've just not cranked it up to full power yet, from one of the scientists at CERN:

..we really have turned on the detectors already, and are learning their full capabilities! We've had them turned on (piecemeal) since around July 2007. And we have been promised a 10 TeV beam in only a few months. That's only 4 TeV off the full energy of 14 TeV.

how is it suppose to end ??? so what happened to 2012 .. planet x,, and all the other end of world predictions.. does this mean I can take off tomorrow/?? maybe get up early and go test drive a maz. and just kind of forget to take it back.. lol .. my luck.. tomorrow will be just like any other.. and if I do take the maz. ill end up in the slammer.. then of course there is that great looking blonde down the street.. I should go pay her a visit.. lol.. yeah.. I do all that.. and you would be right.. it would be the end of the world...... for me.

It's funny how people ignore reason and logic in these kinds of threads.

Your post was so ignored that I almost missed it too. Bravo, ATS.

Deny Ignorance indeed.

The world may end because of CERN but it probably won't. Something could happen to eradicate all of existence on any given day. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next month, next year, etc. It's good to be informed, but being concerned about everything that may end humanity only distracts people from actually living. I personally can't do anything to stop the end of the world via CERN, or some other calamity, so I'm not going to waste the ticking clock that is my life worrying about it.

They turned on the detectors for calibration and testing, there are currently AS OF THIS MOMENT NO BEAMS.
They have detected and CONFIRMED already cosmic rays simultaneously striking two detectors however. That's what he's talking about. Currently they are syncing up the super proton synchrotron with the main collider beampipe magnets and injection system.

NO BEAMS = NO COLLISIONS.

Not one beam has made a full circuit of the LHC.

Looking for a 5TeV beam in September, and with stable circulating beams in place god willing 5TeV collisions soon after.

You're all wrong: The world will be destroyed tomorrow.
But it will be replaced by a exact copy of itself so quickly that no one will notice.

This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: huge success.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Aperture science.
We do what we must because we can.
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive.

I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart and killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
And as they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you.

Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta we're releasing on time.
So I'm glad I got burned think of all the things we learned
For the people who are still alive

Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay inside.
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you.
Maybe Black Mesa -
That was a joke. Haha. Fat chance.
Anyway, this cake is great:
It's so delicious and moist.

Look at me still talking when there's science to do.
When I look out there it makes me glad I'm not you.
I've experiments to run there is research to be done
On the people who are still alive

And believe me I am still alive.
I'm doing science and I'm still alive.
I feel fantastic and I'm still alive.
While you're dying I'll be still alive.
And when you're dead I will be still alive.

Still alive
Still alive

Although there's been further delays, it should be interesting to see if scientists will finally be able to observe the theorized Higgs boson, and to see what adjustments might need to be made to the Standard Model.

If you're going to quote (such as you've done with Jonathan Coulton's "Still Alive"), you really should give proper credit.
