I looked it up and it says....

"The initial particle beams are due for injection in August 2008 the first attempt to circulate beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for September 10, and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on October 21, 2008"

So then October is the official kiss your a** goodbye date then? I am getting more confused all the time on this.

The timer is still visible in the Google cache version of the page.

LHCountdown.com Google Cache

It can't be accurate though as it's just counting down to when it's midnight according to my system clock.

Also, I can't really find what's supposed to happen at midnight. All the serious business isn't scheduled for another few months.

According to that site, the LHC should have ended the world a month ago.

Edited to add:
The server hosting the clock is also still running, here is the direct link:
Countdown Clock

Odd how it's hosted on a dating site.

yeah they hyped up the initial switch-on of the machine, which lead everyone to think that they were colliding stuff today. but the i reread one of the articles either on wiki or on the now downed sight, the other day that said they wouldn't actual collide anything for like 2-3 months...scientific community is great at what they do, but should leave proper advertising/PR of events to the specialists

so it's not getting started up yet. I dunno, they lead us on and then something holds it back. (sounds a bit like the GFL)

dunno if this picture will work,it are a funny.

CERN announces start-up date for LHC - Sept 10

Geneva, 7 August 2008. CERN1 has today announced that the first attempt to circulate a beam in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be made on 10 September. This news comes as the cool down phase of commissioning CERN’s new particle accelerator reaches a successful conclusion. Television coverage of the start-up will be made available through Eurovision.

The next phase in the process is synchronization of the LHC with the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator, which forms the last link in the LHC’s injector chain...
Did the Startrek script writers o.k this line?

Thank-you to everybody who's replied to this thread. I'm glad we've located links to the timer:

The official CERN timer for BIg Day; and,

This timer for the warm-up's (8/8/8).

Thank-you both LockwithnoKey and Symer for those links.

Acidtastic, that picture made me laughhhhhhh.

Glad we've now until 10th Oct to tie up life's loose ends and get done those things we need to get done.

So why are there so many different dates ? If you go to the LHC homepage at

www.lhc.ac.uk...

in the latest news there is

Proton beams have already been delivered to within a few metres of the LHC itself, but beams will be injected for the first time on the official start up day. If everything proceeds according to plan the beam will circulate all the way around the 27 km long LHC. Only one beam, travelling in one direction, will be injected. Over the following months the LHC scientists and engineers will commission the LHC, running beams at higher energy and in both directions. Subject to everything proceeding as planned the LHC may begin collisions using relatively low energy (5TeV) beams towards the end of 2008.

news page is here

www.lhc.ac.uk...

Looks like it's just a startup and testing phase, collisions towards the end of 2008 are the real concern.

they have put it back till september, so sadly the world wont be ending this evening, although it does pose the question "was something wrong?". thell never tell us if it did....

where are you all getting your info from that original site is bunk

REUTERS NEWS LINK

The world's most powerful particle accelerator, aimed at unlocking secrets of the universe, will be launched on September 10, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) said on Thursday.

i dont think until today they made any announcments about the test happening today?

i believe today a certain part of it was tested correctly and now they can give us an official start up time.

just like when motor cars were invented , scientist at the time theorised that if the car went above 30 mph the occupant would be squished.

We are always afraid of what we dont know , but the benefits far outway the risks

If I'm not mistaken they had some stress test a couple of months ago that did not succeed and something broke. This was what was reported on C2C atleast.

So we're not dead yet

But ye, the LHC will not really kill us, i think it will be really interesting to see what will happen. All this black hole, or strangelet, BS is just scare tactics.. Probably accelerated by the bitches that want to keep us scared and out of focus.

synchronization tests start this weekend...

first circulation test starts on the 10th of Sept.

Fully operational to its designed performance by 2010.

This is not an overnight thing by any means but should prove interesting as we watch the steps unfold into the future. The press release is listed below that states the steps and timeline

The supposed theory that these black holes will eat our planet alive is about a realistic a global warming.

I prefer to listen to people like Steven Hawking and other physicists and not some group of fear mongers trying to sway public opinion.

The black holes emit radiation and will disappear within a billionth of a trillionth of a second of creation . They will be to small to even suck in an atom.
