can any knowalble members post any links for whatthey consider a cheap and reliable website.

i wish to order several items ... mostly to use on camping trips and outehr outdoor activities

mainly (viper SPECIAL OPS PACK with webing system ) found one site for 30 pounds

some extra viper pouches to use the webing system on the bag. namely a water bottle pouch and a knife pouch... may order a few more to make full use of the webbing system

mess tins,. for genral camping cooking.. (bacon beans etc in the morning .. maby making e stew etc (found for about 5 pounds for a small set of 3

instant shelter ... the name escapes me the canvas shelter that u tie between trees. for instant shelter. i would like a price for what i should be paying for this.

my aim to create a out door day pack come quick survival... with not to much kit

it would mainly be used for taking on 1-2 day camping trips with all the little bits and bobs i might need in an out door situation... with out being to over the top. and leaving enough room for what ever things i needed to pack for the day.

and in the event of any situation x would be a useful pack to grab and sling on my back before trying to survive in any sence.

i was a scout and stil am i suppose my knowledge of fire building ... survival animal trapping skinning killing etc is very knowable . i pride my self a being the most knowledgeable amongst all my friends in nearly every outdoor situation. im generally the one they turn to to .. errect the tents... make a fire .. cook the food.. the list goes on.

any links to good honest websites that have good valued good would be appreciated

along with any other items that would be good to keep i na bag like that.

so far i have amassed the following things for my outdoor adventure pack

my trusty wind up torch,

my pocket knife,

a simple compass

a very small first aid pouch... mainly containing incest repellent plasters bandages.. and hayfver medican... im allergic...

i do a have a hand axe but have seldom used it i guess i could easly strap it to my pack if need for an outing

fishing had line (comprised of a crab line's hand reel and normal fishing wire floats hooks tec.) quite fun for a days fishing in shallow rivers where a rod is not realy required... though i always make sure i buy a rob license as after resucing the law.. im am still unsure as weather hand lines are required to have a fishing license.

everlasting match (may have wrong name) the sparky tools in order to generate sparks... all was have a small tin of fine tinder to

there are probably many more things you guys can think of ... please list all idars and web links it will be of a great help.

generally i allso carry either a coat or hoodie.. maby swimming shorts if summer time

this would generally be my every day pack but not for everyday situations ... like maby a bike ride around the local country side... or a trip to the new forest to go camping ... maby even something as mundane as a country walk.

it would basical try an contian most things i could need for a given situation... and wit the multitude of detachable webtex style pouches i could have extra equipment ready for certain activity's... like a pouch with a bike repair kit etc.

anyway time to post tis up and wate for some helpful advice

after some digging around i thinnk i wioll definatly have to purchase some mes tins. thinking bk to all those sout camps etc they are great bits of kit.

im going to devise my kit more toward cooking outdoors as i do this a lot.

either going with friends to the beach for a bbq

to some local woods to have a fire and cook some food enjoy some wine etc

i figure with the amount of outdoor cooking i do some simple yet effective cooking kit would be great

.

im thinking

mess tins

cuterly set (the ones that all clip together very cheap found one for 2 pounds 50)

metal food skewers ... small ones with some kind of case so they don't poke holes in my bag.

small army style pot .. for stews and soups and the like

some kind of small ladel , spatula made of stainless steel would allso be good.... haent found any yet ....

anyone got any good websites to buy off???

Hey

www.surplusandadventure.com...

www.armynnavy.com...

www.survival-school.org...

All great websites, I've bought many things off them and the usually arrive within 1-2 days.

Mess tins are great for camping, I take 2...1 for food and 1 for water, the thing I like most about them though is you can put all your cooking utensils (cup, cutlery, stove, sponge) in the small tin and put the larger tin over the top to keep them all in the same place.

Ebay can be useful for buying survival kit online. But the links the other survival folk have mentioned is good too.

I think it's a poncho for sheltering under you are after.
They are usually much more versatile and lighter than a tent and cheaper too.
You're looking at about £20 (ish) for one of these.

A magnesium firestarter (sparker) is a good buy too. These things are cheap - about £5 if memory serves me.

Forget skewers,
They will only take up space and weight.
Just use whats available in the surrounding area, a sharp twig (via the knife) can be just as effective.

As it seems you want this for a 'camping' pack I think that should do for now mate.
Unless you are gearing up for a SitX B.O.B (Bail Out Back/Pack)? These tend to be a lot more comprehensive.

The following outfit is recommended:

webshop.bcbin.eu...

It employed an ex-SAS dude to help pick some of the best kit available and then test it!

Enjoy!

Hi Shadow!
You do know that 'military equipment' is usually supplied by the lowest tender, yes?

Seriously though, concentrate on items for the four priciples of survival:
Protection, (from the elements,)
Location,
Water,
Food.

(Sorry Shadow - it's an old joke amongst squaddies!)

For a start, the website you have quoted is a US one. We have to pay postage/customs/importing above the rates normally quoted for shipping, so items normally end up expensive.

I cant agree with you that the Military get better equipment, sorry. Military equipment is a good standard/base-line to go by, but there are more often than not better specialist civilian equipment available.

You never see British Military Expeditions/Adventure Training Excercises carrying standard Military gear - its all specialist civilian gear. I am not saying standard military gear is rubbish, I am saying its a good baseline and if you can find better, then buy that instead.

FACT: Military gear is supllied by the lowest bidder.

Get some good civvie kit if you can.

I'm looking for a half decent '"utility vest" that I can wear with backpack and can double as a fishing vest too.

Backpack has well padded shoulder straps and hip belt so it can't be too bulky together, flexible enough for cycling, hiking, fishing.

The closest I've seen so far is the 'South African" style assault vest..
It's still a touch bulky too tho.
www.qmstores.co.uk...

It's just something I've thought about recently so any pointers would be cool.

Hey T

What do you think of this one...

www.lansdaleltd.com...

Got decent padding on the shoulders + you can add whatever pouches you need, get a surplus of different style pouches so you can mix and match depending on what your doing.

I have no idea fred3110. I do know that I have ordered stuff from the US which I thought was cheap to find when the postman delivered it to my door, that they want some 'extra postagepaid', so it wasnt so cheap in the end.

7 pocket low impact chest rig.Mine arrives wednesday. I'll be using it for long trekking with a back pack for the day and night. I'll post a review.

I got it to hold camera, binoculars, map in map slot, and some food and a water bottle (as well as windshirt and hat / gloves). The rest gets shoved in the bergen.

No bootnecks ever wore issue unless very wet behind the ears or going through the Commando course. In the falklands they got sh## kit issued and stole dead argie footwear.

Cor lummmeee!! You could play American football in that one
.

Looking at hunting /fishing more than 'assault' as they seem to be a bit slimmer in general.
Just for a couple of reels of line,multitool/essentials tin/compass,map..that kinda thing.

I used to have a 'casual wear' style one that was perfect but had to ditch it with a couple of hundred kg's of non-essentials when returning to UK.
Awww poo..
