Man wakes on post mortem table, asks for water

An Indian man who was knocked unconscious during a stampede of thousands of religious pilgrims on a steep Himalayan mountain path woke up as doctors were preparing to perform his autopsy, the Times of India reported.

"When I woke up, I was in the middle of a row of bodies waiting for post mortem," he told the Times. "My throat was parched and I asked for water. Towering over me the doctors and nursing staff at Anandpur Sahib Civil Hospital looked dazed. They must have been surprised to see a dead man come alive like that."

This is funny and disturbing at the same time. Was this man actually dead when he was brought in, or do the doctors in India not know how to determine if someone is dead vs unconscious?

That is very bizarre. Different reports say different things but the body count is around 120+. I assume that in the chaos of bringing people off the mountain and finding bodies that had fallen it is very plausible that a weak pulse could have been missed.

I can't imagine the thoughts going through those doctor's heads. OMG THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE IS HERE!!!

I didn't even think about other victims...the article I saw was very short and didn't give many details beside this guy waking up right before being cut open.

I'm sure there were a few soiled underpants when he sat up though!
