A patch of land in Ventura County's Los Padres Forest where the ground heated up to 812 degrees Friday continues to puzzle firefighters and geologists after a month and a half of monitoring.

"It's a thermal anomaly," said Ron Oatman, spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

Actually, it was on Coast to Coast.

From what was discussed there, it sounds like some oxygen from the air entered a crack in the ground and somehow something inside the ground ignited and is slowly burning. Never heard of anything like this before but I guess its possible.

Now, the really big questions: Is it caused by Global Warming, and if its oil (as was postulated last night), what happened to that peak?

yes what you are referring to happened somewhere in Colorado to a young boys crocks at the park. There is a thread somewhere here on ATS on this topic, enjoy.

Colorado, a young boy was on a walking trail and the ground superheated and melted his shoes right off his feet, leaving him with severe burns.

A coal mine is slowly burning beneath the ground , they had to move the whole town a few miles...
maybe something similar?
they even used this tow for inspiration in the "Silent Hill" movie!
