Syrian general assassinated

www.news.com.au

A GENERAL thought to be the Syrian regime's liaison with Hezbollah in Lebanon has been assassinated, Arab media has reported.
The reports came almost six months after the killing in a Damascus car bomb of top Hezbollah military commander Imad Mughnieh, which the Shiite militant group blamed on Israel.

The Saudi-owned pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat quoted "informed sources" in London as saying that a senior Syrian officer had been found dead.

One more time with feeling

A GENERAL thought to be the Syrian regime's liaison with Hezbollah in Lebanon has been assassinated, Arab media has reported.
The reports came almost six months after the killing in a Damascus car bomb of top Hezbollah military commander Imad Mughnieh, which the Shiite militant group blamed on Israel.

The Saudi-owned pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat quoted "informed sources" in London as saying that a senior Syrian officer had been found dead.

"The circumstances of the incident are not clear," the London-based paper said in its report, which said the sources suggested that the slain officer had been "in charge of sensitive files and closely linked to the Syrian top brass."

Al-Bawaba, an Arab news website, named the officer as Mohammed Sleiman and said he was "Syria's liaison officer with Lebanon's Hezbollah movement".

It said he was killed by a sniper in the northwest Syrian town of Tartus and would be buried in his hometown of Driekesh today.

The Lebanese anti-Syrian daily al-Mustaqbal quoted a Syrian news site as saying General Sleiman was the head of security at the presidential palace in Damascus and President Bashar al-Assad's "right-hand man".

The paper made no mention of Hezbollah in its report.

A Hezbollah official in Lebanon said that he did not know Mohammed Sleiman and had not heard about any killing.

Israel has denied the Hezbollah charge that it was behind the assassination of Mr Mughnieh in the Syrian capital on February 12.

I have no Idea where this is going but Israel will surely be suspected unless someone else claims responsibility. So many thing are happening at once as if something is being put in motion. I hope this all turns out coincidental.

This is how kneejerk the left is these days. My guess is that Syria is more than likely behind this.

The Olmert govt is trying to get some sort of peace deal with Assad, Assad wants a deal because Assad wants the Golan heights back. It would make more sense for the Syrians to have him eliminated.

There can be no doubt Mossad is behind this.

They've been active on the Syrian-Lebanese border for decades now, trying to create tension and distance between the two nations, because of course Lebanon is Shiite by majority while Syria is Sunni, they figured it would be easy to create a divergence between the two to get them to stop collaborating attacks on Israel.

Could be an attempt at a false flag attack and to throw some light on Lebanon.

I'm not sure. Israel have both the motive and the means. See, for instance, yesterday's Daily Telegraph report that Hezb ollah are ready to strike at Israel again, as they did in 2006. Without Syrian support, it would be extremely difficult for the group to mount such an operation. Since 2006, Mossad has been trying to assassinate key figures in the organisation to make a second summer war harder to wage. Disrupting their links with Syria is one way to achieve this. I'm not trying to criticise Israel; only try to understand why they might do something like this.

Israel and Syria are on the verge of a peace deal that would give the Golan
back to Syria. So, the Syrians cut their ties with Hezbollah by, let's say, "closing their Lebanese office". General Suleiman probably had knowledge in the assassination of President Hariri as well.

Pan-Arab al-Hayat newspaper, quoting "well-informed" sources in London, said the officer had been found dead on Friday night-Saturday morning. It said the officer had been in charge of "sensitive files" and was close to the Syrian leadership.

Go MOSSAD!

at least one of the worlds 'secret services' is effective at its job....

Makes perfect sense for Israel to do this, as has been said before me: MOSSAD have the motive and the means.

Strike one....wonder what strike two will involve

Since the IDF were forced out of gaza by stone throwing apes - what evre stike 2 will be , it will be retailiated by the gaza self defence force - you do know that only 6 countries say hezbollah are terrorists right? USA and Israel.... are teh main 2 , the rest of the world see them as a legitimate resistance group.

oh and since you want war so much - quit posting and sign up.

and Mabus

Effective at taking out the wrong targets? Sure.

Lillehammer Affair - Mossad mistook Moroccan waiter for Palestinian terrorist

Effective at screwing up major operations with stupid mistakes? Sure.

Mossad Agents caught in the act trying to kill PLO Leader after somebody noticed their suspicious, phoney passports

Effective at wasting resources, by initiating a useless letter bombing campaign which only killed 1 Palestinian terrorist in 30 years? Sure.
Mossad's letter bombing campaign

Effective at setting back the Arab-Israeli peace process by engaging in violent attacks during cease-fires? Yep.

Hama's chiefs death a set back for peace process

Effective at actually collecting reliable intelligence information?... Mmm not so good.
Hence why the PLO, the PFLP, Hamas and Hezbollah are still as strong as ever after 40 years of Mossad trying to topple their leadership structures.

The Israelis like to toot their own horn a bit too much, I don't know how Mossad got this reputation of being an effective intelligence agency after what?
Grabbing a few Nazi war criminals from around the globe and bringing them to trial?

You could send Boy Scouts to grab a few old German geezers, how hard is that..

The voice of Ignorance speaks...again.

Name me any proof or reliable source that it was the US and or Isreal.
(Of course you can not, as non exists.)

Perhaps in the future you should post, "In My Opinion", since that is the only thing you have, no facts, no proof no sources.

Now, I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but you need to state it is nothing more than your unproven/factless opinion.

BTW, if you do have any proof, please post it for all to see.

I also think that Syrian establishment (at least those who are for more West oriented approach) is somehow involved in it. Especially since only Hizbollah-connected people are getting killed, Hamas leaders in Syria are not harmed for example.
Maybe however it is a revenge from Lebanese opposition whose leaders were assassinated earlier. Or of course could be Israel - but it is very stupid to talk with Assad while wiping out his top official. Not smart diplomacy. And since i think that Israel will try to reach agreement with Syria and pay a lot to do so to make Iranian atomic bomb threat .mmm.. more manageable in the future - i do not think that it is Israel, or US.

This is what I had to say in a duplicate thread.

Star and flag from me. The real question here is wether this was a political message, or a direct tactical intervention to disrupt something the General was working on.

The thing that attracted my attention to that thread was that the General was President Assad's top security advisor.

I would suggest Hezbollah. Revenge killing for Imad Moughniyah last February, or possibly from within Syria itself.

I doubt the Mossad would have done it.

From my personal knowledge of the region and factions within the Syrian and Lebanese Governments, I strongly believe this may have been carried out by people within the Lebanese military.

We should do some digging and see if this General was heavily involved in the Assassination of Rafik Harriri about 3 years ago. If so, I would put my money on some faction within the Lebanese military getting a little revenge. We should remember that Harriri's son is a major player in their Government at the moment, so nothing is really off the table when you have the means.

But there is always the possibility of this being the work of Mossad (which was my initial feeling before I thought about the volatile situation between the Lebanese and Syrians).
