I'm not sure if this exactly slides as metaphysical, but this is something a martial artist taught me which is very cool. He said that he had studied body mechanics so he gave me a bar bell and had me hold it on it's side so it was vertical. It was 15 pounds or so. He said lift it so I did (it was at my side and moved it up in front of me so it was at my shoulder whilst having my arm extended). There was a bit of resistance to it, since I am not that strong, but I could lift it. Then he said now relax your hand and arm. So I did. Resting the round part of the barbell on top of my fist (the bar still being vertical). Then he said lift with the root of where the energy is coming from. He wanted me to relax everything yet still keep it straight and just move the part of the shoulder that was the base to move it up. So I did and it barely felt like there was any weight at all resisting the upward motion of my arm/shoulder.

I've used this many times and things which felt impossible to lift became a lot easier. Certain objects within a 15 pound radius felt as easy as moving my arm without any weight attached to it. If you go to the root and only move that muscle while relaxing the other ones. It costs a lot less energy. It also works the important muscle which is the base. He was able to lift absurd amounts of weight this way.

He called it ki or chi, but I think that that's just another way of saying energy. This being exerting less energy to move something, so it become much easier. The path of least resistance.

I have heard of yogis and other mystics being able to lift extreme amounts of weight that would seem impossible
. This might be one of the ways they did it.

Be warned though if you life this way you will be extremely sore the next couple days, because it works the one area so intensely yet it doesn't feel like it does.


Just thought I'd share that fun experience.

interesting. I'm going to go try that out and see how it works.

I remember a kung fu guy teching me about how the ligaments in the arm worked and how you can make it so that the arm is 3 times stronger in blocking attacks, and why some kung fu moves have the hand they way they do.

The demonstration is simple. have a buddy try and pull your arm down from the forearm or wrist while you are trying to do a basic arm curl. like when you are curling a dumbell with the palm facing your chest. the standard curl. it's pretty easy to pull the guys arm down and out of the curl. But do the exact same thing with the hand facing the other way, away from your body like a reverse curl and the ligaments sort of lock the arm so that it's muuuuuuuuuch harder to pull down out of the curl. You can try it on your self. it's simple but it really works.

Yeah I tried it
. I encourage anyone to try this technique as well as Bass'. It's body mechanics. It almost seems supernatural though when you have a good grasp at it. I found this site that has a lot of things like the one you mentioned Bass. If anyones interested I could try to find it. It's pretty good if you're a martial artist.

I wonder if this technique could possibly be used to create more muscle mass and/or strength in less time. You stated that you become very sore and I see why if you only use one part of your body or one muscle that reacquires a couple of muscle groups.


I'm still a tiny bit confused on how to perform this type of body mechanics, could you give me a link to more info or a diagram or something?

That's pretty cool.

But consider, 'real' Qi, specifically doesn't use the 'shoulder' and cautions against it, claiming that it interrupts the vector from the grounded foot/leg, up through the spine.

Still the 'trick' kind of movement just involves not tensing the muscle that is antagonistic to the muscle in use, freeing the working muscle from unnecessary counter-tension.

I recently changed my work outs to stop using the standard curl, and start using hammer curls (palm facing chest). I can lift more and it feels like it works my forearm better. Its also our natural position for the forearm.
