Did you guys hear about the possible close out last year for michigan??
That they made a service tax so makeup for the defficate and what they found out that they made the defficate back and also had alot left over. In other words they taxed too much than what was required to fill in the defficate.

I am just saying what's next??? tax for our oxygen consumption??
lol
I am just saying it's getting to the point that I wont be surprised seeing public restrooms having a fee to use it. I can't bealive that I heard about license for just a regular bike not a motor bike just a regular one. Am I right to get concern what's going to be next??

Also I get people from a local church every sunday 4 girls come to my door asking me to accept a gift a bible and I didn't accept it but I later on found out they want to get me to a point where I will then have to pay for the service.

I told them I am not interested and they keeping asking if I am. I also get calls at 12-midnight from india from direct tv asking if I want dish they speak very poor english. I then put my phone number on a do-not-call list that the U.S conumers commision made which by law I can report direct tv to the U.S gov and they will have penalties. I have been getting many of these telemarketers and I been reporting them to the trade commision program ect the people who give the penalty fees to companies ect. They didn't do anything.

Also yes the Detroit police don't care about stolen bikes because they don't even care if you got your car stolen or even get shot as long they can blame the crime on somone they would do it or else they act like their on the case but they aren't they mostly would work on cases that need the most focus ect.

Did you hear about the Detroit Redwings parade they had the detroit mayor and everyone booed lol.

I can't bealive he is still in office after lieing so much.

He also at that one state of addresss to Detroit he at the end used the N word which I throught was illegal to say. I really can't bealive he is still in office.

I also agree with out it wont do much in income but just think of it, If everyone had a bike and wanted to ride it if you times how many people pays for this you could get good enought income out of it.

These are just my thoughts. I had to rub my eyes when I saw this story on the newspaper that bikes would need licenses. I was like is this for regular bikes or motor bikes?? lol I read all of it and found out it's regular bikes and I was like omg. Urghh.. lol

I don't know what's in store for us next??

I think a $55 ticket for not having a license is what they are banking on---but my point is with all the crime going on, the cops have much more to worry about than getting that $55.

I've been keeping up with all the mayor crap. I don't live in Detroit, but I'm close enough. This thing is going to drag on forever. Kwame is nothing but a criminal and I hope he gets what he deserves.

Huh? That is a mighty big stretch of logic there, couldn't you still run or walk to "travel freely".

Not necessarily. There are a lot of places where you are required to present a state-issued identification on demand of any law-enforcement official. So technically, you can't set foot out of your house without paying a "licensing" fee of some sort.

We had those stickers when I was a kid too, but they were not required by law. I registered my bicycles with the police after my first one was stolen from my front lawn. The next was stolen while chained to the rack outside of my elementary school while classes were in session. The third was stolen by a "big kid" who knocked me off of it, beat me up, and made off with it. The fourth stolen from off of a bike rack for a car. Never recovered a single one of those bikes either, despite the regisration fees.

I aint wearing any helmet cuase when you fall off a bike you are more likely to get your arm scrapped on the ground. Plus, I like to listen to music on headphones when ridin on a mountain bike and need to be able to take them off. With a helmet it would be hard to take off if I need to. Or maybe the helmet and headphones wont fit on together cause I never tried it.

You don't wear your helmet while riding your bike listening to your MP3 player? You are just an accident waiting to happen. Hey it's your skull that will get split open, I guess that it's a free country. Anybody that does any amount of riding their bikes on major roads should have a helmet. To each their own I guess.

Thats just ridiculous, I love the health benefits I used to feel when I rode my bike everyday, unfortunately I was one of the many that got their bike stolen off the rack outside my office last year...

I can see how they're trying to inforce the whole idea to limit crime and bike theft, but im sure making people pay to ride their bikes is going in the wrong direction, they just need to set up more surveillance in areas where bikes can be accessible to those who are intending to steal... ridiculous, i'd ride without a helmet and a license just to piss em off if I was kickin in detroit...

Did you also hear about trucks being hyjacked??? I have heard that when truckers drive through Detroit they make sure they have a shotgun in their cabin. The reason they have a huge spike in Truck theft. The trucks would stop at a red light and guys would have a gun and run up to the truck and point it at the trucker and tell him to get out.

Me and my dad were going to a pharmacy that was south of 8 mile and right on 8 mile we had a red light which soon turned green their was a car a head of us which started to go and then I see at the corner of my eye a semi-truck going too fast that it slammed it's breaks and you could hear the truck scretch and still he couldn't stop he the finally stop passed the intersection which while he was in the intersection he honk his horn because the car in front of us if he didn't stop he would of gotten hit by the truck.

I have heard today the truckers are being pushed hard to make ends meat.

ya also what's funny you know the detroit mayors girl that he she was the council planner or somthing I was at my friends work which he works at a all star japanese resturant which I seen her their she paid for a 1,400 bucks meal and that resturant is expensive the cheapest they have on the menu is some sort of fish that cost 350 a plate the fish is cut and cooked in front of you but if you see how much fish you get you would be like how is this $350 I am saying you can eat more fish at micdonalds. lol

I just still can't bealive the mayor is still in office even after a year knowing he is doing crooked stuff.

I personally lost trust in our government.

I remeber a case about an area51 worker dieing of cancer or some sort that the family suied the U.S gov which the lawyer had a hard time convincing the judge that the base exists he had to show a satilight map of the base to prove that this base exist once they done that then the U.S gov admitted that yes their is an area51. This is proof for me that their is so much more undercover and the Gov shouldn't be trusted.

I don't know if I am going to vote this year thinking that the election maybe rigged.

if I do vote I am going to vote for nader because I really sick of democrats and republican. I am sure obama or john will not be in favor of us they will favor businesses because if you really look at who help fund their campain didn't do it out of their heart in business it's always I give you somthing you return the favor.

I think nader is the only one that can change America. He hasen't been bought out by big corps because if he were then he will be able to have a debate session on cnn or a major network. I have heard on cnn that alot of people are chaning their vote to vote for nader just beacuse they are sick of the back and forth propaganda aginst demorates and republicans.

Also just want to so hope you guys had a happy 4th of july.

Did anyone see any fireworks?? I seen some but this year they were less fireworks at the show and even some shows that existed in the passed years even last year this year they decided to not due it because they can't afford it. Looks like our economy needs help. We are currently in a ression. A Ressions is what our U.S GDP(gross domestic product) loses value compared in the last 5 years.Whic ours is low.

I am glad to see many replies on my post I thought my post would be dead but I really thank you guys on your replies and keep them coming. I would love to hear what your overall thoughts on our GOV and about this article.

The issue is not whether they are ticketing people for unlicensed bicycles so much as having so many laws on the books that they can revert to enforcing old ones.Bicycle licensing has been around for a long time, and I really doubt that in the history of it's existence it has recovered very many stolen bikes anywhere....It was put there to get the fine for not having a licensed bike.
Reading some of the posts here really makes it perfectly clear why this country is such a fkn mess.
Like the one who says he wants to wear headphones so he doesnt' wanna wear a helmet, besides you usually scrape up you arm,not your head.
I think maybe he landed on his head too many times already.
If people just simply refuse to accept this BS from the government, what can they do but quit enforcing these laws,so lets' refuse to follow any of them and excersise a bit of common sense to keep from harming one another, like in the old days when people used their brain more.
I ride a bike 32 miles to work every morning,Florida has no bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure to speak of and is #1 or #2 in the nation for bicyclist/pedestrian fatalities.
I have been doing this for three years and am still alive,I wonder why that is?
Certainly not because I was wearing headphones.
The proof is in the pudding............

I guess that you'll be first in line to pay the tax for having the identity chip in your arm? No doubt, the tax for the air that you breathe will not be a problem for you either?

No way ever ever ever will I pay to ride my bike anywhere!

I can see why the world is screwed, when there are actually people who support this friggin' nonsense.

Riding a bike is about freedom. It's a simple, healthy pleasure.

I agree with jackinthebox, the pot boils because people accept crap like this.

Not joking either.

My gf got a ticket for riding her bike a few weeks ago. No joke. The ticket was for not having a red light on the back of the bike. Turns out the law only requires a reflector.

So they'll ticket you for biking now.

Not long before they ticket you for walking around in public.

You'll need a license to leave your house.

...All for your own protection.

Why should bike readers get a free ride on roads and highways paid for by the motoring public?

Because the public roads were made for the public to use for Free Travel...The only lawful licensing allowed is for those who wish to conduct their business by use of public roads.

As Elevated one pointed out, the State can only encourage people to be licensed...And this holds true even with your automobile...Once you've allowed the Title of Ownership to fall into State hands (& they do require you to do so in order that they issue your license plates), your auto becomes property of the State. Once that happens, they automatically & arbitrarily re-classify it as "motor vehicle," which submits you to all State regulations concerning Motor Vehicles...Including the requirement of a license to Drive it. And once you've signed your name to the Driver's License, you've lost your Right to Travel Freely...Instead of being a Rightful Traveler, you've become a Regulated Driver.

The Right to Travel Freely also means using the kind of conveyances in common use in your time period...To the Framers of the Constitution, that meant horse-n-buggy, but today it means Automobiles too. BTW, when do you hop on your dog to Travel Freely? As far as I know, Alaska doesn't require licensing for dog-sleds...
You're comparing apples to oranges with that example.

The truth they don't want you to learn is that it is your Right to Travel Freely, but they go to a lot of trouble to get you to "voluntarily" waive your Rights so that they can offer you the "privileges" instead. That's the basis of far too many laws on the books right now.

You sir (assuming you're a sir & not a ma'am), would make an excellent politician (but a lousy public servant) in the way you want to tax/license people to exercise their Rights under the Constitution...Which is an Unlawful practice, BTW. You are already being taxed to make the roads & other "public facilities"...And even those taxes are lawfully required to come out of the privilege of conducting business (ie: profit or gain from conducting business ventures), not from normal individual earned wages.

Tax, Tax & more Tax...Do you, by chance, have a job that depends upon taxpayer support to pay your wages/salaries? I can see no other reason for someone to violate Constitutionally-defined Rights for the purpose of collecting more "fees" for supporting & increasing the growth of the State or Federal Governments.

its about time

other cities should take examples of this and apply it as well

here's another tip for bike riders

always obey the rules of the road if your'e going to ride your bike IN the road.

nothing more angering than watching a guy on a bike blow a red light.

What about a driver blowing a red light? You don't mind that? After all he's the one that's going to kill you if you run into him, not a bike rider.

What about a driver purposely nudging one of your family members riding a bike off the road? That doesn't make you mad?

What about drivers who run down pedestrians in the crosswalk? You fine with that?

Just curious.

Bladable?

You're speaking of off-road trails that a small grader or dozer could blade smooth now and then?

One of the N/W states, Washington perhaps, can't remember for sure had a trail program for off-road riders.
Once a trail was lined out - surveyed -they had a fairly small machine that would make a narrow dirt road through the forest in legal off-road riding areas.

The riders were good about sticking to the trail and it worked out well for both the Forestry service and riders.

A good use of the off-road licensing monies.

California's off-road license - called Green Stickys - fee was $15. per two years.

I rode off-road for quite a while and the joke about the California Green Sticky program was that the monies paid for an officer to see if your bike had an off-road sticky.

Other than the state stealing seven million dollars from the Green Sticky fund and put it into the general fund.

The off-road riding groups got together and elected a state congressman who worked hard in getting our money together.

I haven't ridden for a number of years, but I hear they have some good programs in place and have purchased areas for off-road riding.

It's not a big deal, the dang thing costs a buck and is good for five years. Plus if it gets stolen and then recovered by the Police, they know who to contact about it. Next thing you know, they'll want to issue licenses for your pet dog..................

how is this going to help the cops recover stolen bikes??!! steal the bike, peel off the tag. Bikes dont have serial numbers. I live in Ann Arbor and I'll be damn if they try that crap here. And for the guy who asked "why they should get to use the roads taxpayers pay for, for free", well then yeah whats next skate boards, rollerblades, big wheels? Screw this

Andrews got a point.

I see very few bike riders stop for stop signs, but have only seen a few run through a red light.

As for some jerk in a vehicle pushing a bike rider out of the way, the driver should be arrested and charged with the appropriate assault charge.

The city of Detroit should be taken over by the state.
It is the most mismanaged filthy neglected dump I have ever seen.

Measures like trying to make people pay for a bike license only show you how desperate they are to extort money out of people that they no longer get in funding. Mind you the majority demographic is not going to be able to pay 55 dollars for a bike ticket, or whatever it costs to license a bike. This is why they are riding a bike to begin with and not driving a car.

Detroit needs to get it's head out of it's ass if it is to ever recover to the mediocre city it once was. I think if it was managed by the state, or if the current "regime' were changed at a minimum they could get some intelligent people to work toward bringing back some value to the city making it attractive to business and residents.

Instead, they are making it more unattractive to everyone,a nd thy are going to be met with great hatred if they thing this bicycle crap is going to fly.
