Google must divulge YouTube log

news.bbc.co.uk

Google must hand over the log holding details of every user who has watched any video on YouTube, a US court ruled.

The ruling comes as part of Google's legal battle with Viacom over allegations of copyright infringement.

Digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) called the ruling a "set-back to privacy rights".

The log, which will be handed to Viacom, contains the log-in ID of users, the computer IP address (online identifier) and video file details.

The EFF nutters are going overboard now,
first they get (trying to get ISPs to monitor everything that their users are doing)

now they want details of everyone that watches Youtube to be given to them.

an example over an ISP is virgin which has officialy said they are on the side of the EFF and not the consumers.

intresting artticle with vid on how people can be blamed for something they havent done.

Start nutty stay nutty. Seems every day the frontier is more and more not-private. So this 'Frontier Foundation', whadda they do? Argue something imaginary and wishful? Sheesh. Hey, what do real settlers, on real frontiers do? Do they whinge and complain 'gee its too dangerous here' or 'the beds arent soft enough' or whaah whaah everything isn't the way we woulda wanted it to be? NO! They adapt to the reality of the situation! Get their heads outa the clouds!

Props to anyone fightin the good fight for what they believe though... even if they're still tiltin at windmills after all these years.

Well, isn't that special? I wonder who will be next to be ordered by a Federal judge to turn over their records. Quite an interesting precedent being set here, don't you think?

I would think that say a site like "YouPorn" for instance could definitely be lopped into this for occasional copyright infringement, but more importantly how many viewers will be accused of engaging in deviant behavior. Makes you think.

Its going to take a class action suit by the users to stop this kind of insidious creeping controll over internet usage. Viacom is losing its shirt because of the lousey content in the entertainment they are producing now and ignoring what the mainstream citizenry want for entertainment. A boycot of anything they have they're hands in and notification of the reasons why might help.

All they got on me here are a few Ron Paul videos, some techno, and some pitbull stuff.

I hate this. They wanna know everything we do online... Why??

Can we have a class-action lawsuit to stop this?

So what is it that they are trying to do?

Are they trying to criminalize the watchers? Or just trying to shut it down altogether?

The last video I watched on U-tube was a hom video of some cute puppies playing. Wow, better put me on the watch list.

I sure would love it, if the ancient peoples who created language came back today and sued us all for copyright infringement etc.. it'd be classic.. every word people used to justify themselves would then be used against them; I find it ridiculous that people can arrange life, or events in life and claim some kind of copyright and say .. ohhh "that" moment or that "stream of events" is MINE, because I spent so much money to make sure the events of life were carried out to my desire, exactly how I wrote them down, with the people I wanted there, directed them, and since I was able to pull it off, if anyone watches or sees that part of life then they should have to pay for it!!!!.... ...

like come on, sure people don't outright say that but isn't that what this has come to? copyrighting certain aspects of life and then making people pay to experience it??.. people are so far from reality it isn't even funny.

I just wish they could "disappear" all that data, just like the government who conveniently keeps losing files/informations as soon as someone manages to file a FFIA on "sensitive" stuff

it was also noted that BT had monitord thousends of its users
so it could target advertisement at them which suits the pattern of their searches and what sites they visit,

so not only do the ISPs get money from spying on their users from adevertisers
by using target adverisment,

now this was over a few months as a trial run (without concent of course from the users)

now if some ISPs will do that to their customers, its not a far leap for them to shack up with the EFF

What 'EEF' are you talking about? The Egyptologists' Electronic Forum? Or the European Ecological Federation?

If you're talking about the EFF, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, I don't see much evidence of them 'shacking up' with anything, except maybe a copy of Black's Law Dictionary.

I went to their web site to see what they actually had to say. I found their press-release from yesterday (2 July 2008):

Court Ruling Will Expose Viewing Habits of YouTube Users [EFF]

Actually, they're making a legal case (not an idealogical one) against this judge's action. They're saying that there's a law, the "Video Privacy Protection Act", 18 USC 2710, that says:

pursuant to this federal law, the Court may not order the production of “personally identifiable information”:

in a civil proceeding [except] upon a showing of compelling need for the information that cannot be accommodated by any other means, if—

(i) the consumer is given reasonable notice, by the person seeking the disclosure, of the court proceeding relevant to the issuance of the court order; and
(ii) the consumer is afforded the opportunity to appear and contest the claim of the person seeking the disclosure.

Which actually seems reasonable to expect, that the court should follow the law and such.

Bodrul,
They do that everytime you fill out an application or use your credit card. They sell that information. AOL has used targeted response for years. Thats why they use they're own browser and redirect anything you do on the internet. They make millions on this program and have for years. I imagine most other ISP's do it also.

Actually, no. You have to provide the url to the video in order for Tubezoid to decode and download it for you. And, by using Tubezoid and related services, you have actually opened yourself up to more liability. You see, there is a difference between viewing a video that is embedded in a page and actually downloading content. It is possible to accidentally browse to a page and see a video, but your intentions are legally binding when you decide to download it through a service.
