The thing that depresses me more than the possibility of the US invading Iran, is that a large chunk of the blind, 'patriotic' Americans will support the invasion.

"Gur hyuck, lets get us more of dem towelhead a-rabs'.

I know that there are plenty of sensible, intelligent and worldly Americans (most of them frequent this board i think
), but if the post-invasion period is anything like Iraq, their voices won't mean squat.

Remember the now infamous words of Bill O'Reilly?

To paraphrase, once the invasion begins the American people are advised to help in any way they can. If they can't, then they are to shut up.

When you have a majority of your country made out of FOX-fed sheep it is hard to do much about it.

I sincerely feel for you all who will suffer from such an attack. Just so you know, there is plenty of room in Australia to go around.

Yes, and the sad thing is those people are Persians over there... They aren't even Arabs.

I would also bet my next paycheck most of the people over there are just like us here in the US. They just want to raise their families. I suspect that its that way the world over including the Arabs and its the very few that screw all of us... We are all scared into thinking they are the boogey man.. They being us and them... It really pisses me off...

It would be nice to be able to organize the average Joe citizen the world over and say enough is enough..

This is what our stock market demands..new wars..new conflicts..expansion at any cost. Secure access to regional resources to provide CEO's and bankers ever higher profits..and interest. Blood for oil, blood for profit..blood for the American way of life. Corporate wealth..control and market share.
We Are Right. What a world we have created killing for control..control for profit..profit for economic security and Corporate bottom lines.
America is business, innovation, and profit..above all profit..and war does not end until all the possible profits have been made..business deals secured and advantage gained..War is America's business and look around business is good.
The lies we are sold daily..you can take your pick.. me personally I am sick to death of the hypocritical administration and the ineffective opposition collaborators.
We are all DON QUIXOTE..off tilting at windmills...if we think this is going to change anytime soon.
I want the truth about everything at any and all cost..and at some point I am going to have to be willing to pay the personal price. I think that's why things are as bad as they are right now..too many people are not willing to face the burden of seeking the truth face the onslaught of attack on their history..the IRS, and whom ever else can be brought to bear. I write..an empty solitary pursuit..write about the emotion that the state of affairs engenders..write certain that my thoughts and feelings change nothing..and yet I am still compelled to share my anguish. We grow enough food..we make enough clothes, we can house and care for our own people and have more besides if we want to share things more equitably. We don't there is no PROFIT to made on Wall St in SHARING. SO its a race to the bottom and then a war for the top of the declining pile..
We can not all be as selfish as the current state of affairs seems to indicate to me.

I'm not at all suprised by this story. What would have been truly shocking would have been a story stating that the U.S. has NOT initiated covert ops against Iran. I mean, did anyone truly believe that U.S. doesn't play ball that way? Another thing, is $400 million dollars alot for covert ops? I know it's alot of money for most people, but what does your run-of-the-mill covert op cost? I for one have no idea.

IMO, it should have been fairly obvious that Iran has been the end-game of this whole thing from the start. Think about it in geographic terms. First, Afghanistan is taken on the eastern flank of Iran. Then Iraq is taken on the western flank of Iran. Yeah, Pakistan is over there on the east, too but they're more or less obedient. No real threat from the north and the south needs no explanation. So, what you have is a perfect stage to put the squeeze on Iran from opposing directions. Iran is a big country and much more organized than its neighbors, so you'd need to be well prepared for the task. I think that the reason U.S. hasn't already taken Iran down is that Iraq, and to a lesser extent, Afghanistan have operationally gone so poorly that U.S. couldn't realistically accomplish the task. Now, if you get Israel to carry the bulk of the load for some type of limited offensive I think you might have something realistic.

Just my 2 cents

This better not lead to the next World War. The draft will be reinstated, the elections will be postponed indefinitely, and so on and on and on...

But who really thought that we would leave that area alone? Why are we still there after all these years? And to think that, if that one goes down, who will join the fight? Which country's next on the agenda?

dude, I would love to live in Australia, and I mean that.
Not only are the people great, there's no major problem I have with the govt.
I just found out, this month actually, that I have family in Australia, and I can do a pretty good Auzzie accent... perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Thanks for th post.
not much we can do now but sit down and watch, cross our fingers...
that and spread the word... which I've been doing to friends and family...

Interesting chronology:

blogs.salon.com...

The ultimate fear, as previewed by right wing neocon hack Bill Kristol, will be the implied threat to attack Iran if it appears that Obama will decisively win in November ~ which is becoming more and more likely.

The likely scenario, which I feel will happen, perhaps before November, will be an air strike by Israel against Iran which will be followed by a massive American strike against Iran ~ after Iran retaliates against Israel.

Bush's justification will be protecting Israel and the spineless Democrats will loudly bluster and fold as the Cheney/Bush war machine continues to roll on ~ playing the fear card until it is called.

All of this AIPEC kow-towing makes more sense now. Israel just might be our cover, so we can disguise our aggression by appearing to "defend" our allies.

Yeah, thats what I said a few posts back.
I feel that not only could we be giving Israel the OK, but perhaps even urging them to do so.
That way, once Israel attacks, Bush needs no excuse but to back our ally.
clever...

I always felt that Seymour Hersh was not necessarily a disinformation guy, but sort of handled as such. For instance, he stated in The New Yorker in early 2005 that we were going to be attacking Iran that June and that we'd had covert crawlers in Iran since we got into Iraq in 2003. Then, in 2006, he said we were ramping up to bomb their facilities, possibly nuclear before the elections that year. In 2007, Hersh didn't say much about it, but is now claiming that we are going to bomb them before Bush leaves office. I also read his book about "Camelot" in regards to JFK. It was chuck full of weird crap; about JFK having incurable STD's and other stuff that didn't add up.

So, I'm a little skeptical of Hersh. I see him as someone who's being fed b.s. to channel towards Iran to keep them off guard because you know they watch our press. It's a lot cheaper and sometimes more profitable, in the political sense, to rumble the drums of war mysteriously towards a country, especially since we're next door in Iraq.

But, It doesn't seem applicable by and large. It would totally undermine and ruin "the fragile peace" in Iraq - well, we're just paying off their insurgent groups to hush up and settle down.

Who knows what we're up to in Iran or about Iran itself? All I know is that the war drums against Iran have been fired up to this level a few times over the past few years and each time it turns into, "But, this time I'm right! Love, Seymour Hirsch" and nothing happens.

As for the Russians and China coming to Iran's aid, I think is unlikely. If we hand them tons of money and such, they'll shut up right that second. Money's the name of the game, just like getting our hands on that Iranian oil someday.

everyone on heRe needs to look into the iranian oil bourse and understand that its causing the collapse of the dollar. this is why the internet cables were cut in febuary. i believe the bourse ,that was scheduled to open 2 years earlier, opened on Feb. 11th. they are accepting the euro for oil and destablizing our currency. the iranians have said that that is their new "nuke" that they will use on america, to destroy our economy
they also sell the oil on the internet directly to the oil companies and countries all over the world. this cuts out the middleman and stops speculation. IRAN GO BOOM!
I'M SUPRISED VENEZEULA isn't in the mix, because they,re in the bourse too with a few other countries as well. anyone remember the "i still smell the sulphur " remark?
this is not a good situation by any means. heres a little fun reading to pass the time whle you're waiting for the end of the world as we know it...

the sacrifice of the fifth fleet

this also does not thrill me as my daughter has just been transfered to the fifth fleet, to the USS BATAAN. NOT GOOD.

CNN is way behind in reporting as usual. Covert operations have been going on for almost a year.

Myself and others have stated an attack on Iran is planned in July and will most likely occur next month.

An attack on Iran will be made by Isreal before November to ensure that Bush is still the "true" president when the attack takes place. The US will not be directly involved but indirectly via Isreal.

Now an attack in September is leaving things a little late to get the US well and truly indirectly involved with full support for the Isrealis from the US public. The propoganda machine needs to start churning. So I would say that July/August is the time frame for an attack.

There we go WWIII starts in the next month or so.....lovely. It will be WWIII due to the links between Iran, Russia and China.

There are US Carrier battle groups moving into the Gulf as we speak. Now I don't know if any of you guys have seen a Carrier battle group but just one has the aerial firepower of a small country. Think on that for a moment. One Carrier battle group has the firepower of a small country, not including nuclear strike capability.
If we see 3 battle groups in the gulf then things are about to get hot. Just one battle group would be enough to do area security, keep the trade lanes open and project power in the region. Two battle groups would be enough to send a clear message to any hostile nation not to mess around. Three battle groups on the other hand sends a clear message of intent.
These ships cost the US tax payer alot of money to deploy so in my mind 3 Carrier battle groups means that they will at some point be used. I believe that this administration will strike Iran before the year is out.
There are two scenarios that present themselves, one that US and Israel complete an air campaign with minimum casualties and destroy Irans ability to enrich Uranium. Scenario two would be a strike by the US and Israel resulting in high casualties and the Iranian ability to enrich Uranium relatively untouched resulting in an escalation of hostilities with the possibility of a ground War and or a tactical Nuclear strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.
I think we can all agree the second scenario would be something to be avoided.
The US military believes that an attack on Iran would be foolish given the commitments we already have in the region and many a wise General and Admiral has counselled against military action in Iran. But the administration feels that because they got two easy victories over Iraq in both gulf Wars that the US cannot be beaten by a bunch of camel jockeys from a second world country. This is a mistake. Iran is not Iraq. They have not been weakened my 2 Wars close together and sanctions from the UN. Their Military is well trained and motivated, unlike the armies faced by allied forces in the 2 Gulf Wars. Their anti aircraft systems are much more advanced than Iraq's, granted they will have problems combating stealth and cruise attacks but the US does not have an entire airforce of stealth bombers, "conventional" strike aircraft will also have to be used and Iran is quite capable of downing these aircraft with the anti air tech they have. Also there is the matter of the Sunburn anti ship missile. Being mobile they will be difficult to track down, remember the trouble we had with the Scuds? And if one of these missiles, just one, gets through and sinks a carrier or escort then the US will be forced, imho, to escalate the conflict with a Nuclear strike option, the US public will demand nothing less.
So to summarise either way we will be screwed on one level or another.

I seem to remember that I posted a while back saying exactly the same thing, That he would attack Iran just before he was to leave office, that way he'd have to stay in power. HMM surprising this bit of news..

Well guys, I'm off to Israel today.
My dad has a computer over there so I'll be able to check back in.
I'm going to talk to him some about this whole situation and see what a regular Israeli civilian thinks is going to happen and what the news is over there.
They're usually right.

I don't think he will attack Iran, he just doesn't have the support, theres no way IMO what i think is, this and rhetoric like this is designed to goad Iran into doing something retaliatory or to declare war on US e.g.

he Bush administration has launched a "significant escalation" of covert operations in Iran, sending U.S. commandos to spy on the country's nuclear facilities and undermine the Islamic republic's government, journalist Seymour Hersh said Sunday.
Well, not so covert any more eh? What would people in Iran say reading that? What if the situation were reversed? Would people in US tolerate there stuff being spied on, i doubt it. But Iran doesn't particularly want war, neither i think do US in general just the neocons trying to make things happen as per usual, oh well they'll be out of office soon having made the world a far more dangerous place and setting the middle east peace process back 50 years
