Bomb Iran? What's to Stop Us?

www.consortiumnews.com

Emerging from a 90-minute White House meeting with President George W. Bush on June 4, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the two leaders were of one mind:

“We reached agreement on the need to take care of the Iranian threat. I left with a lot less question marks [than] I had entered with regarding the means, the timetable restrictions, and American resoluteness to deal with the problem. George Bush understands the severity of the Iranian threat and the need to vanquish it, and intends to act on that matter before the end of his term in the White House.”

Does that sound like a man concerned that Bush is just bluff and bluster?

A member of Olmert’s delegation noted that same day that the two countries had agreed to cooperate in case of an attack by Iran, and that “the meetings focused on ‘operational matters’ pertaining to the Iranian threat.” So bring ‘em on!

A show of hands please. How many believe Iran is about to attack the U.S. or Israel?

It was hard to pick a snippet out of this article that would summarize it well because the article covered so much ground, but of all the peices I have read on the issue this one really stands out.

It's an interesting summary of many related issues, if you don't mind reading a bit you may find it worthy of your time.

I am so tired of everyone misquoting the National Security Estimate that was wrote to try and stop Bush from attacking Iran. Thats the only reason why it was made public so fast and it does not say that Iran stopped all together on bomb work and it also says that since 2003 we don't know what they are doing. Come on people!!!

Iran has been busted many times by the U.N. recently and enough to have the Russians come out and warn them three times in one month to stop their nuclear activities. They have sent their Shihab-3 missile into space for test with a certain size payloads on board and this is why.

www.washingtonpost.com...

They are working to get nukes and everyone knows it and we will stop them. If they retaliate then we will wipe them out while China and Russia sit back and say to Iran, I told you so you should have not taunted the U.S. and Israel thats our job.

What’s to stop us? Let’s see….. Good judgment, respect for life, a lack of power mad megalomania, concern for our own people’s well being rather than Israel, the realization that Russia and China will not stand idly by forever while we checkmate them in the ME, and a general lack of blood lust. Oh wait, we’re still in the Bush era huh? God help us.

I think you forgot that Oil would sky rocket to $200 a barrel and effectively kill our already sluggish economy...yup.

"..........And they shall be of the same mind." Sounds like the ol' beast again.

One would think that they didn't go this far just go back home with their tail between their legs. Especially, if Iran was the intended target all along. If you recall, they funded Iraq to take them on originally. Then Iraq gave up after what? 8 years or so?

It really seems they plan on finishing the job regardless of who is in the Whitehouse. I would pretty much expect that Israel would strike these targets at some point. Especially, since they hit Syria recently.

Talk about Nuclear facilities, that one that the North Koreans showed, honestly looked like it was retired several years ago anyway. It looked like something built in the 50's.

I think it's pretty sad that any country that does so much in the way of potential progress would be so stupid as to threaten their enemy and cry foul. They must believe it will hurt us more economically then them.

The fact it seems, is that they supposedly have to do it before these go on line.

If it was up to me though, I would just keep a few bases there for as long as possible and not start another war over oil. This only means we have to get away from OIL ASAP.

Its already been rumored Israel has done training for air strikes for the bombing.

The New York Times report quoted U.S. officials as saying more than 100 Israeli F-16s and F-15s staged the maneuver over the eastern Mediterranean and Greece in the first week of June. It said the aircraft flew more than 900 miles (1,450 kilometers), roughly the distance from Israel to Iran's Natanz nuclear enrichment facility, and that the exercise included refueling tankers and helicopters capable of rescuing downed pilots.

News on suppose attack rumor.

Israel prepares to strike Iran

One of the long-running debates here in Jerusalem is whether or not the US and Israel are preparing the ground for a military strike on Iran.

There is vast disagreement here on this issue - and there are no easy answers.

But wheels are in motion.

To answer just the title question:

How about a moral center, how about the fact that our economy is crumbling and letting government contractors rob us blind while our family members bleed and die on a battle field is not ones wet dream. How about the fact that the people of Iran are largely pro US and that an invasion or bombing of Iran would change that very quickly.

I could fill all 8000 characters with examples of why we shouldn't. But I doubt anyone will even listen anymore.

que sera, sera.

it will be what it will be. we cannot stop it now. the thing is, the motive will decide the outcome. do we really want to "win"? if so, then we will see technological "breakthrough" emanating from releases from our government to public companies. but if we are trying to bring down earthly population, driving the US head first into the ground would be easily achieved by attacking Iran.

That's exactly my concern with this. I'm no fan of Iran but I feel that the economic fallout of an air campain will be tantamount to suicide for the economy. With the many other crises building up already, I don't think we can weather the additional strain. Oil will surge, stock market and dollars will plunge and it'll be all over but the cryin'. It sure seems as if decline is in the cards, if it was planned all along they certainly are doing a bang up job on the execution.

You are probably right... It will be like one of those farm bills past in the middle of the night with all the whacky home land security provisions in it. The Supreme Court will probably come down on the side of gun confiscation at the same hour...

When they hit Iran I think a lot of things are going to change. With the coming financial crisis the only way to divert attention from that colossal blunder will be to create a blunder on the same scale...

Whatever man... I think the only wat to stop the madness is for the ET's to zap all of our technology and put us back in to the stone age... At least then we will only have to worry about growing our own food...

You're fooling yourself if you think they wouldn't use an attack on Iran to inflate the prices even more.

Two birds with one stone...

The honest truth is that if the US wanted to, they can wipe the Iranians clean in a few weeks. One day will distroy all their installations and satelites, and then it's down hill from there for them.

The problem is the occupation, which is practically hand to hand gun to gun conflict, which will give them the advantage and will fail like Iraq.

The US can pretty much turn Iran into a third world county in matters of weeks and not occupy them. The problem is after the US wipes the Iranian militarily clean. The Iranians will probably sneak a nuke into the US and set it off, so that is the concequences of dealing with that.

"A show of hands please. How many believe Iran is about to attack the U.S. or Israel?"

Hi SystemiK,

I believe Iran is not about to attack the US or Israel, why would they?

The don't want a war and are not asking for one!

If the US or Israel was to atack Iran it would be for the same reasons the US attacked Iraq. Suspicion of weapons of mass destruction or showing they do have them along with a threat Iran has pushed against Israel in using them.

Iran feels they have the right to owning nukes like any other country this is where the problem lies! Russia will back Iran and Russia has already warned the US that if they make a move on Iran there will be consequences!

It would not be in the best interest of the US to move in on Iran unless it was a joint effort and they had good reasoning to. Even if they have weapons of mass destruction that might not be a good enough reason anymore. Perhaps if it is proven they have some nukes and make threats of using them that is a good enough reason to make a move!

War with Iran would be the begining of hell on earth and would push nations into WWIII. Perhaps even a religious battle that would bring in many countries. (Let's pray it never happens!)

(Just my opinions on the matter)

Kindest Regards!

If was going to be easy we would already have done it. The Iranians have Russian onyx and other sophisticated missles. I think the Russians will actually fire them. Remember, if you will, during the Vietnam war era when the North Vietnamese knocked 4 or 5 of our b-52s down in one week with salvos of Sams. We(US) are building an idiotic missle defense system in eastern Europe. We have refused to stop. A great writer (Voltaire, Mark Twain?), once wrote that history repeats itself, first time is tragedy, the second time is farce.

Our big fleet is parked in missle range. Maybe we don't need those carriers anymore. Also, didn't one of those important mullas issue a fatwa that someone could use a nuke against the US and take out 10 million for retribution. (edit for content)

The Russians don't really care if Iran is destroyed, but they want it to cost the US as much as possible. No cakewalk. Also, I disagree with Fallon (former admiral no less) when he remarked something like "we would crush them like ants". Now that he's been forcefully retired he doesn't have to worry about being in a ship hit by a missle and maybe ending up in Davey Jones' Locker.

I'll add decency as members of the human race, or a semblance of such if that is not asking too much.

It appears the old axiom is true: The only threat to peace is war.

Israel certainly could not survive one or two nuclear explosions. It is smaller than NJ and doesn't have the strategic depth. What if say a terrorist snuck a tactical nuke and hit a strategic asset? Also, there is some religous nutz thinking the Mahdi is coming and want to kick off Armageddon. If I was Israel, I would have an itchy trigger finger.
