I totally agree with you on this. I can think of a myriad of things a person may try to do under the assumption that your motivations are good but the actions are criminal.

Spoken like a true ignoramus, your lack of research on the subject, is blinded only by your inability to read. Gary has served his time under UK law, because the AMERICAN government doesn't believe this punishment was enough, they are throwing their weight around and setting an example of him. This is not justice and NOT what the law should be used for, it is for protecting people rather than being used as a means to an end.

Do you think Gary would recieve a fair trial?
fair, they're claiming he is a terrorist, therefore...Gitmo, no pass go, no $200, NO TRIAL. Gary said himself that the US offered him a deal, (something like) 5 years in jail, first 6 months in US, rest of time would be served in UK, Gary agreed and asked for it in writing, next time he heard from them, they were saying if he didn't come quietly, they would be prosecuting him to the max, 7 counts, each carrying 10 years.

I can't fault the guy. If it wasn't so glaringly obvious they are hiding something, he wouldn't have been snooping.

On a side note....he was NEVER going to find anything in files accessible by internet though.

The part that scares me is not that some nerd is smarter than some other nerd at NASA, it's this:

McKinnon faces a sentence of up to 60 years under terrorism charges.

This guy might end up in Gitmo for this.....The Shrub admin will treat this guy like Osama Bin Hackin.

Uhhh, he did find it. Hence the harsh punishment.

Sorry, but your whacked out beliefs do NOT excuse breaking the law.

He will be extradited, and he should be. Then he will face the law, as he should do.

Just because he, and his supporters, all believe in the Easter Bunny, does not excuse breaking the law.

Stop and think for just a moment. I mean really put those three or four functioning grey cells that you have to work.

If any beings had the ablility to engage in interstellar travel, why would they give a damn about such a primitive planet as the earth? We are no potential threat to them, and we would be far too primitive to benefit from their technologies, etc.

They certainly would not take essentially uneducated people to sample what earthlings were like. They would not be interested in breeding with us (after all, are you interested in breeding with a mouse?).

No, if they did anything at all, they would merely keep an eye on us.

As to the vast conspiracy theories that all of you love so much, well happy crazy thoughts to all of you. And don't forget to take your Mellaril tonight!

did you ever think about slave labor ? sheeples make really good labor intensive slaves.

Is it against British law or American law? He did it while in Britain. I despise hackers as well but he did not "hack" into anything. That would require finding and using a secure or encrypted password which they did not have. Leaving the admin password blank is just stupid! The truth needs to get out! I feel 60 years is way too far to go on this matter. Perhaps a couple years. Definitely not a terrorist.

Hacking is hacking, and I'm sure he came across some pretty sensitive stuff while looking through whatever he was trying to get to. He needs to be punished duly for his actions.

What if he went on for another 3 years and realized... "Well, I can't find any evidence on the existence of extraterrestrial life so maybe I can start making some money by selling government secrets that I've collected over the years."

He had his hands on some stuff I'm sure we as a country wouldn't want getting out.

he saved no information the closest he had was a list of the names of photos that he looked at in his registry file. not exactly us secrets. and by the way he dident break in to anything he walked right in, even had a chat with the admin on at least one occasion who caught him looking around, did they turn him in? did they report that there security was so lacking that they dident even have all there admin passwords asigned or secured? no they dident it wasent till much later he was busted. he was on a 56k dial up line for peats sake the pics alone were so big he couldent spare the time to download them.

i got a question for you with your personal pc do you protect it with passwords? restricted logins ? well updated firewalls? well they dident and if they cant use the same measures of protection available to every home pc user then they desearve what they get because its their Negligence thats to blame. and granted many of the systems he broke in to were goverment owned but nasa is not so you cant add that to goverment charges. yes they are funded with federal money but they are a private institution .

and why were computers with supposedly classified and sensative material running windows to begin with? shouldent they be running linux which is a hell of a lot more secure? if they have computer operators that dont know how to use linux then they should be fired or retrained at the least. and what about file encryption for crying out loud my friend encrypts all his files from his grocery list down to his freaking porn is it to much to expect the federal goverment files to be as secure as my friends porn!

there making a big deal out of this for 3 simple reasons.

1) so people dont ask why the security sucks because instead there all patriotic and saying "he read goverment secrets he compromised our security he should be put away before he can sell them to < insert possible enemy or rival here >" .

2) because they want to set a example to all other hackers that you mess with the feds you pay dearly ( the head on a pike at the gate tactic).

3) because there pissed a stoner from the uk made them all look like idiots with the stroke of a few keys.

lol, here here, don't forget the fact he's going round shouting that they have off-world bases, officers etc. (if there were 20-30 off-world officers, how many subordinates?) This whole thing is a joke, I can accept he does need to be punished further, possibly, apart from the 1 year community service, but 60 years? IN GITMO?

If this ever goes through, it will be a sad day in the world.

What the US government should do is hire this guy to help them fix their sites vulnerabilities. It kills me when I read some of these posts about breaking the law. Yeah, and terrorists will abide by this and say "Oh, my... I can hack into a USG site but I won't because it is against the law." Stupid government!!!

If he WAS looking at US secrets.......would you be more mad at the dingus who did the lookin', or the dingus who left the friggin' door OPEN?

If he is looking at time, so should the guy at NASA in charge of IT security....

Seems like leaving national secrets out in the open is commonplace now, just ask the government in the UK.

NASA hacker appeals to House of Lords to overturn extradition

www.scmagazineuk.com

McKinnon, a former sys admin, says he spent two years hacking into a number of US government systems looking for evidence of extra-terrestrial life. He is accused of illegally accessing computers belonging to the US army, navy, air force, NASA and the Department of Defense.

McKinnon is asking the Lords to overturn the proposed extradition on the grounds of an abuse of legal processes by US officials engaging in plea bargaining.

Sounds like he is preparing an insanity defense.

Ah yes they are going to keep someone who has admitted to have gained unauthorized access to NASA's systems. Plus they are going to suddenly choose to not cooperate with their biggest ally to protect someone who BROKE THE FRIGGEN LAW. You guys make me laugh. You find his hacking NASA systems OK because he says he was in search of things NASA was supposedly hiding. This idiot knew full well what he was doing was highly illegal. If you can't face the obvious consequences then maybe you shoudln't do it. I find it hilarious that peopel actually buy his story of finding odd photos on their systems. This fool was on their systems for over a year and came away with nothing? Not even a screen capture? You #ting me? I'm an ex hacker/cracker and can tell you if he were telling the truth he would have at least one of these images to share with us. Since he doesn't I call bull#.

Love the way you guys are pouncing on this guy, makes me wonder what your agenda could be, kind of reminds me of a story I heard of 3 Marocains in a train compartment who were slandering the king, they really got into it until at a certain point all three of them drew their secret service Id's and tried to arrest each other.

I had one more question for everyone....

Did he ever electronically sign a EULA??

If the accounts were defaults, with no passwords....wouldn't that mean he never agreed to anything?

Sure, it's not illegal... But that doesnt make it right. 'The law' is something created by the governments, & be reminded that the governments are hacking & spying on citizens, & the NSA had wired up their system to be able to listen & record anything LONG before 9/11... - It was all a plan. The way that everything is set up now is by design to SCREW US UP SO BAD, the majority will demand martial law. - I'm sorry to digress, but STOP being distracted by the details, & look at the big picture... - When I had finished watching the Disclosure Project NPC 2001 video, I was FURIOUS (and hopeful, slightly) that if I could get this out to as many people as possible, perhaps things could be the way they are supposed to be... - But no... It's not about greed, it's not about incompetance, it's about a plan to take over the world. - And I'm really... really... really sick of this!!!! - My electricity bill is so high, I almost died last friday, & I had fallen on my bike because I passed out because my blood sugar was low, because I cannot afford decent food, because I have to pay 250$ a month for electricity... Knowing the truth, I would've hacked too, but I'm too smart for that: (He's being charged) - Alternatively, I'm putting all info like this together, & I'm combining that with a tactic where I'm asking all my visitors to post the info all around! - Put disclosureproject.org all over the place!

Note to the disgusting government: You better hurry up with that FAKE alien invasion of yours to get your one world millitary/government to 'protect' us, (not that you care about us anyways) because I'm almost finished with getting the information presentable so that no one can possibly deny it; they will be interested. - And your manipulation of the native people of this Planet for thousands of years will not only be proven, but will be proven to be a big waste of time.... You've had your fun, Reptilians, you've created mass Chaos on OUR Planet, we have studied your Reptilian bloodline which suspiciously can be traced back as being the same family tree for thousands of years.... You had to mix with the genes of the native people in order to go under cover because the people would not take your crap then, & we wont take it now!!!!!!

- Aren't you sick of paying for ancient technology like gasoline? I mean really... This is beyond outrageous at this point...

I REALLY think we should all stop caring about what others may think, & just tell every random stranger to check out the disclosureproject !!!! We are NOT powerless!!!!!!! WAKE UP THE WORLD ASAP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE... I SWEAR, THIS IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE.
