What a great speech!

Isn't it ironic that a child would be the one to point out the glaring errors of adults?

i heard she works for shell now, supplying fuel into the lumber yards in brazil. it's probably not true, but it is a lie worth spreading.

Bravo.

Thanks for posting this, and my thanks to the young lady for speaking up.

Sometimes I think it takes the innocence of a child to see past all the well thought out rationalizations we use to justify our bad behavior.

Its ironic how the words of a child carry more weight in truth than the lies of all nations put together.

I was not able to find much about her but she is now 28 (and not working for Shell)

This was obviously written several years ago (based on the age stated) but here is a short bio from a project she was involved with:

Severin Suzuki
Motivational speaker and Co-creator of the Skyfish Project

At 9 years old, Severin and some friends started the Environmental Children's Organization and raised enough money to go to the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Severin, then 12 years old, gave a closing speech to the representatives from all over the world. Since then she has continued to encourage environmental and social action; the Skyfish Project, started in 2002, is Severin and her friends' most recent venture. As a part of Kofi Annan's Special Advisory Panel the Skyfish Project brought the Recognition of Responsibility, a pledge now signed by over 2700 youth, to the United Nations summit in Johannesburg.

Severin received the United Nations Environment Program 500 Award in 1993, has hosted many television programs and lectured around the world, and has been honoured and adopted by three British Columbia First Nations. Severin is 23 now, and she speaks at international conferences and meetings, encouraging young people to speak their mind and to act on a better future.

Your right...

Why should Scienticts or people that are knowing what they are talking about talk to the UN... or congress...

Oh now, lets just have a little inuet girl regurgitate some speach that some lacky wrote for her... saying that 'the north americans are so selfish... you dont care for little paublo... who would give you everything if he had it.'

Get it out of here... what a load...

This video is from 1992... mabye if the world leaders had been haveing scienticts talk to them they could have done something... what a load...

There have ALWAYS been species that died, there has always been evniromental changes... what fools...

You think this is the worse the planet has faced, that because we are driving around in cars, the earth is just going to stop spin?

I listened to the thing 2 times, just to see if i was missing what you all seem to be gushing over... the more i hear the worse it sounds...

"oh.. the northern countries are evil, they dont share thier wealth.. thier bad.. bad northern Americans...'

She is basiclys saying in a nice way... "hey, whity, why are you not giving what you earned to those that are less needy... why arent you people who have everything, giving to those..."

What a load...

Now dont get me wroung, i dont think ill of this girl, i just feel bad that she is getting paraded around, its a crock...

She offers nothing, no ideas, no reasoning, only a guilt trip, and anything that we do iw wroung, and that it can only be wroung, not that she has an idea what is right, only that we are wroung...

And give us a reason why we shouldn't feel guilty?

All we do is take and take... produce and produce... consume and consume.
What does it give you to have a "nice" car? If you need to make your day feel better, I would ask you to look at your life again.
What do you need all those money for? Clothes are clothes, no matter the price. A house is a house no matter how big it is.
Why do you need a cellphone? Are you so affraid that the world will forget about you if you're not at the beck and call of everyone at any time? Do you really think you're that special? What did you do before the time of the mobile? Did you sit at home, waiting, hoping someone would call and ask what you did the last 5 min.
What did you do before the time of the internet? Did you take to the streets to protest with a booming voice or did you sit at home cursing the tv?

We have more than good lives. If we draw a scale where one end is having nothing and starving and at the other end we have people like mr. Gore, then I bet you'd find yourself some way above the middle. If find yourself or your family in a situation right now where times are lacking, food is expensive and you are struggling, it's because of money...

Our quest for money doesn't create wealth, it perpetuates a constant lack thereof.
However, if you make it your life giving instead, you'll soon see that giving not only rewards in pleasant feeling but also provide you with a decent living through time.

Well, there’s a paragon of sharing and caring: Kofi Annan! A parasite who has enriched himself (and his family) under the U.N. banner while proclaiming how much he cares for humanity. Kofi Annan, strutting around with his millions, using this little muppet to tell the West how evil they are for not sharing. He’s her director? Perhaps Kim Jong-Il should be her instructor on human rights issues? What a farce!
Hopefully, this tool will wake up – after years of making a massive carbon footprint by jetting needlessly around the world – and realize what a dupe she has been.

I found it interesting she starts her speech off with the words: “I have no hidden agenda…”. Perhaps not. But those behind her certainly do.

P.S. To all those that were truly and deeply touched by her speech: I have some real estate you might be interested in buying (some of it includes bridges and national monuments!). Please U2U passenger and send cash only.

Hasn't anyone else noticed that she really didn't get through to the delegates? Over half of the seats were empty as if they knew who was next and they felt they didn't have to be there. The ones that were there looked like ok, when is this girl going to be done talking?

I'm sorry, but a speech is only powerful if it persuades the people listening to it to actually do something. Well, 16 years later and nothing really has been done now has it? The only people I see trying to make an impact are some of the mega churches and mega charitable organizations. Yet the poor still remain poor. Much of the money goes to the administration and processing of all the red tape they have to go through just to try to get aid to foreign countries. Then maybe some one will get the help they need.

As far as the environment goes, we can only blame a small portion of it on over use. The problem is that the Earth goes through cycles and not just the 4 seasons. There are even larger cycles the Earth goes through. When the Earth makes the its natural shifts all high and hell water will break loose. The last major shift was I believe the Ice Age, and look what happened. Many of the animals died. Yet, there were those that still survived.

There has been some archaeological evidence that some places that are deserts now have once been lakes or seas a very long time ago. I remember on Discovery how they found remains of boats that is now in the middle of a desert. Shifts like that can't be blamed on human consumption. Unless you want to believe that humans were advanced or even more so than we are today. That what they did caused those types of changes.

Even if that was so, we don't have the evidence nor do we know how they made such an impact so we won't make the same mistakes again. Other than that, the Earth's climate has gone through some major natural disrupting changes that we would consider major natural disasters. They happened before, and will happen again no matter what we do or don't do.

Why would you feel guilt for living your life the best you can.

It is not the responsiblitlty of the 'Northern Countries' to feed the poor countires of the world. That is absurd...

short of answering each of the questions you asked, ill just summerize.

I own a mid-90s civic, all stock... i got in a crash once, and my dad and i fixed it... i only use it to drive back to my parents house, which is 300+ miles away... the car isnt that nice, it has diffrent color pannels because when i was fixing it, i used USED parts only...

You say what does my family need a big house for? What are we doing with all that money... Well, my parent had 4 kids in 5 years, and we are all in college now... and we are all smart, but our parents make too much money to receive any finaicail aid for the Govement, or the State goverment... since we are not Black/Mexican/ or a diffrent minority, we can have no scholarships here in California... so alot of that money is going to pay for schooling...

Cellphone... i guess i dont REALY need it, but it is my only phone line, i dont have a LAN line, and neither do 90% of the people my age... also, my phone is a $10 phone from wal-mart... umm... i ussaly dont use it much... over the past 6/7 years, my family has racked up like 20,000 rollover mins... i dont use my cell much, outside of talking to my parents, and my Dad who is 12,000 miles away now...

As for the internet... well, i was born into the internet age... so my bad....

So why should i feel guilty? because my dad has a great job? And he works his ass off every day? My dad works for a major corperation, and his job is an Enviromental Saftey Engerneer... so ive been surrounding by enviromentalists my whole life, and i have DONE more work then any sane person has...

I cant tell you how many times that me and my family have planted trees, cleaned up & make wildlife reserves in places. Digging a DRINKING WELL for a third world village that was near my dads work area.

Dont say that i shoudl feel guilty because my Dad works his ass for and is succsesful...

If you feel so guilty, then do what you want. do something on your own, dont say the white man should feel guilty because he has it too easy. He has worked for his wage... if want to give handouts, no one will stop you.

In fact, i encourage it, mabye you should invite some 3rd world scumbags to come live with you... have Jose from the Ghetto of Mexico City come live with you.. oh then your guilt will be quelled, then you are a 'good' whitey, why, you are helping the poor unfortunate minority, who obviosly cant help themself... do you feel good... they must love whity now...

I am offended that you say i should feel guilty...

Passenger, nice job on digging that info up.

Who would have though, Kofi Annan, realy, what a suprise... i mean... who would have thought that HE would be leading the Charge to try to get the WHites to feel guilty... what a shock... 'I have no hidden agenda' is basicly comeing out and saying you have a hidden agenda... who says they dont have a hidden adgenda when they dont have one... what a joke... ITs like some guy at he bar, he tells the girl, ' i have no hidden agenda here, my hidden adgenda is NOT not to have sex with you... um.. no agenda...' that just soesnt work...

You have to dig deep.. you must think past emotions...

Its better to be a-emotional then show any emotion when trying to think objectivly....

I also love how people that have been members here for 2 weeks, are calling people fools, and telling them to open thier eyes... umm... well... im not going to call you a fool, but im going to recomend that you open you eyes... because things are mostly not what they seem.

DONT TELL ME TO FEEL GUILTY!

I should not feel guilty because of what going on around the world, where do we get our right to become the overseer of the world????

Should i feel guilty about the Millions of people dying in Burma because the Junta wont let Western Aid in??? Or should i feel angry towards the junta(burma military Goverment)?

It is not our place to police the world, its not out place to play provider to the world.

If Africa wants to have perpetual civil war, LET THEM!

People need to stop getting all gushy when children read prewritten speaches... i cant blame you, unless you have the disipline to constitly abandon you emotions when thinking criticaly.

WHy just last year, our US congress had some little Inuet girl come talk to them.. complain about how the polar bears have to swim... they all gushed over her... and she offered about the same as this girl here in the video...

Just a guilt trip... with no solutions, only that whatever you do is wroung...

Dude..every time I come into a thread and read your posts, you always seem to have a way of being negative and making the OP poster feel 2 inches tall. Really though. That is what is sad to me. I respect your opinion however and your right to say it, but come on....have a little heart sometimes and don't' be so quick to call someones post "a load of BS" essentially. There's a nicer way of saying things. I'm sorry, but I just had to say something about that.

For example, if I made a thread about how I loved chocolate, it would not surprise me in the least for you to make a post about how much you hate chocolate and how ignorant it is to like chocolate.
