The metal container gives the pulse another path. if the item inside is touching any part of the metal the pulse will transfer into it. So the item being stored still needs to be properly insulated with non conductive material. The wooden floors in the container will not do because they are connected to the metal frame with metal fasteners, such as carriage bolts. Any metal at all touching the item is gonna In my opinion be a bad thing.

Here is a professional solution: www.peprollc.com...

I am sure do-it-yourself is what I would have done were I younger, but now that I am older than dirt I look for someone reliable to do it and buy it ... if I can afford it. If not, there is always Plan B with me in the cave at the back of my property.

What if the container is underground. Will it work? Will anything underground have a natural protection against EMP? How deep the bunker should be?

Thanks for the link Pellevoisin.

Now, one more thing. How are we going to test this thing?

Personally I don't want to test it.

But if your feeling gutsy some ware among all that research I ran across plans for a Hand held non nuclear EMP pulse generator. Never downloaded it However. I have enough trouble using a 555 timer.

I will try to confirm but If I remember the minimum is 4 feet of hard packed earth. Ime to tired tonight to go over the few notes I have left.

A faraday cage can shield smaller electronics from an EMP but I honestly have no idea if you could scale one up to protect say a car and have it be feasable in any way shape or form. But a generator should be doable.

EMP effect will remain evident for a time that can only be determined by the size of the EMP,, in other words even for a time after an EMP type of detonation anything that needs an electromagnetic field will not work that includes but is not limited to Ham radio, Cars, Generators, computers..

Many of these items will survive the EMP itself but will still not function until the EMP stops strumming the strings of the atmosphere thereby removing any chance of inductance (inductance is what coils are for) which is required for even the most simple of ignitions on the oldest of cars..

Guess it could have been easier to say that EMP has residual effects that may last weeks months or even years...

The effects I am talking about are called the HEAVE signal or HEAVE effect

I would say Steam but you know that generators work on a magnetic field so that ain't gonna happen either..
Tesla did some really good research on this stuff way back when in colorado springs

Basically all you got to do is turn off all your electronic equipments or unplug them from the grid, and it will have better chances in surviving the EMP blast. Is that what you're saying?

If what you're saying is true then global communication will be down even though my equipment is fine. That is not good.

I suppose I can stock up some batteries for supply, but maybe just like Fred suggested, solar panels could do the trick.

Any link on the Tesla research?

some equipment will be just fine the FCC and DHS have tested much of the ham radio equipment out there and much of it will survive an EMP situation
much of the wireless technology (cell towers) will survive an EMP

but the HEAVE effect and signals could last a long time no one knows for sure on this because there has never been a HEMP detonation that has been studied, I for one couldn't say how long wouldn't even begin to know where to start but I know that if you can't generate a field in a coil as in my/your ham radio equipment you won't have anything..

Some people that have studied this on behalf of the military liken it to going from living in todays world to living in the 1800 in seconds, you'll be on foot and or a bicycle like I said though not sure here and much of the research is vague and or non existent

The tesla thing you can do a search on his wireless power distribution research it worked closely with resonant atmospheric frequencies and so on look up his laboratory in CO springs and his Wardenclyffe project ..

Not sure about you guys but while I have my electronic gear radios and so on I also feel compelled to focus on things that aren't modern hand tools hand drills things like that because if you think about it we lived for thousands of years without electricity and have only lived with electricity for a 120 years or so my money is on how we survived before the modern world

Oh yeah and the solar panel thing well you won't be able to use the voltage controllers and charge controllers and (has coils) and if it did work (12volt solar cell) you still wouldn't have comms cause you won't be able to tune without inductive devices,, Like I said I am no expert but I do deal with emergency communications for a living and as a hobby but if and I say if this work is correct then you will really just need to communicate with your neighbors..

One thing I found out from researching a PV system for our house is that even with a huge bank of panels, if you have a grid tie system, and the grid is out, you do not power your house at all. you also are blacked out.

[edit on 5/28/08 by FredT]

That's only true if you choose to limit your options to selling back to the grid. If, however, your PV output is used to maintain a battery bank and that bank powers your house via an inverter, you can have AC power even if the grid fell down.

Best electrical generation is to build an anaerobic digester in your back yard and generate methane gas from your toilet waste, garden waste and animal waste. Burn it in a Stirling engine, which doesn't require electronic ignition and won't be affected by EMP. Buy "A Chinese Biogas Manual" from amazon.com

As far as EMP, rots a ruck. I can build an explosive FCG NNEMP for $100 bucks at Radio Shack that will turn a $25 million Kiowa helicopter into a paperweight. No Faraday cage is going to harden anything against 50 million amps. Keep an abacus handy.

If you bury the container, make sure it's access is to the south if you are in the northern hemisphere. Due to the earths magnetic field, 90% of an EM Pulse will be directed towards the South. Placing your access on the southern side of a hill would provide maximum earth protection.

No, I'm not an expert. I just read a Wiki article about EMP's and it showed a graph of a pulse bomb over Kansas high enough to cover most of the U.S.
