This is awesome! The Phoenix Lander has only been on Mars for a few short hours and already images from it are being posted on the NASA site. New ones will upload to the NASA page as they are recieved.

Hopefully there will be more photos released soon. So far just the one photo of the ground I guess. Very cool though nonetheless. I'm curious what the MECA experiments will show. They only have 4 single-use beakers so they got 4 chances anyway..

EDIT..
Right now it's 1052PM Alaska time (152AM Pacific). In 8 minutes, on the science channel, they are having a special about the phoenix lander and it's successful touchdown.

See we're getting the same old same 'Red' planet rubbish, or may be it was a very windy day and kicked up all that RED dust?

on the nasa chanel i get reporters where talking about one of the pictures taken, i guess theirs something significant enuf to make out, in the picture but no explanation of what it is. but i cant seem to find the pict they were all riled up about. has anyone else seem this picture in question?

I've just seen some close up pics of the ground that the Pheonix lander has taken.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that all that ground is sterile and without life!

I'm sure that creatures that survive on gases other than oxygen are possible. Look at the marine life and the new discovery of starfish type creature dwelling at near hell temperatures.

Yes the ecosystem is shall we say, missing but given the vastly different world we may not recognise it (or it might be underground).

It's only a matter of time...

I think it is werd that the lander have dust on its landing pad - Pictures fra 69 moon lander have none.

Thats actually one of the main reasons for this mission and why they landed at this spot. This is the first time there has been a successful mission to Mars' polar region. It's been long speculated that possible traces of life would be found in frozen water thats buried under the soil.

They're hoping to take samples from this frozen region and maybe see if they can't find some sort of microbial reminisce. At the very least they'll be able to maybe find out just how deep below the soil it is till the solid ice, even tho they can't drill into it with this lander.

yes, more of the same pink skies from nasa, here is a shot of the ground that looks some what normal but they labeled it "false color"

wow.. Not sure if anyone noticed yet but look at the sky.......sky?
atmosphere?

how come there not like shots from the moon where the
sky is not there and it is space that we see.

but in the mars shots,(and in the earlier mars shots that have been on ats i the past)
all show a sky....not space...

I no nothing about space and planets but it doesn`t make any sense to me.

can anyone explain?
thanx

That square formation in the post above is said to be almost identical to permafrost on earth, the location where the lander landed (:lol
was off center of the arctic pole, and should be just 3 short feet from the suspected ice underneath. AWESOME!

I'm so happy to see that this probe made it's way there safely. Now we just need to get some good results from all of the tests that they will be running while it's active there.

OK, NASA will not be outdone! Check out the ESA's version of these pics. They let you look at them in higher quality.
These Phoenix photos aren't 'corrected' as much as is usual for NASA.
Tons of biological formations. Terrestrial anthropologists should have a field day!
Did you see the white spike/tower. It's no glitch!! It has massing and a 3D appearance. Look closely people. There are only so many shapes and configurations that occur as a result of meteorite frags and volcanism.
NASA won't let the ESA be the first to publish the lon-awaited Martian Ecology Text.

Look in upper right near horizon. zoom and compare with ESA version.

On each picture if you use the full resolution link they have below picture can any of you make out the white thing in the distance in the photo, it looks like it is standing.

Image section 3rd row middle picture

I think raw image "first" of 3

Mars has an atmosphere as opposes to the moon which has very close to none.Therfore the molecules which comprise the martian atmosphere reflect light at various wavelengths giving rise to the sky.
The moon has practically no molecules in the atmosphere, therfore
only the darkness of space is seen.

Exactly, a very good point. Another example of evidence that the moon landing was faked, and there's plenty of evidence which throws up questions which NASA hasn't satisfactorally answered.

Or, this is faked, and they added dust this time to stop questions being asked about why no dust on it's landing foot!

I see it too, and it does almost have a humanoid shape when you zoom in!

the white thing in the distance i saw on the first images its noticeable in that it stands out - or appears to

No doubt this will become observation towers - a meerkat like creature looking up - all of which i doubt

I think what it is is rock that the light is catching and the solid white appearance ois caused by the reflection or glare of light

Creating the illusion of it appearing erect and standing or larger than the surrounding area

If it was a "something" or as Bowie may call it a "space oddity" I dont think it would have went public.

You have to remember there are pieces of the probe which detached before landing, you can't rule them out just yet, the white thing could be the parachute draped over a boulder, or the heat shield after it detached buried itself side on into the ground.

As for natural explanations, i would go with some kind of ejected build up, maybe an old geyser, or a salt crystal formation, extreme explanations, mars has termites, im saddened that this mission doesn't have a rover, but the reason its there is no only visual its to test for life in the soil, so if the information is not covered up i cant wait to hear some results, so lets hope Nasa shares the truth.

anyway my theory is its a part of the ejected probe material.

Or perhaps there is no dust on the foot because the ground is frozen solid? and there is no dust to kick up?

Does not prove anything was faked by anyone at anytime, i thought all the moon faked rubbish was put to rest ages ago? by a lot of folk not even involved with Nasa, and the whole fake thing was just the moaning wishes of a couple of sad old men who live in the desert, who hate the federal government.

Even the achievements of Hero's is not safe anymore. very sad. we live in an anti hero society.
