OKYO: Malaysian former premier Mahathir Mohamad on Friday lashed out at the West over Myanmar, saying countries were using aid for cyclone victims as propaganda while rushing to condemn the junta. “When giving aid there is a tendency to make this occasion an opportunity to condemn and run down the Myanmar government,” Mahathir, a frequent critic of the West, told reporters during a visit here. “When you send materials, you advertise where they’re from. It seems almost as if you’re not interested in helping the victims but more in promoting the fact that you’re a great donor,” he added. afp

Yeah, you're right. Diverting the USS Essex and her escorts, who could have already been providing hundreds of thousands of gallons of fresh water almost every day, immediately after the storm, and parking C-17s and C-130s in the area isn't trying to help at all. The Junta has done NOTHING wrong in their handling of this situation.

Aid isn't being offered by the West on a conditional basis ... it never is ... no-one's saying "change your government & we'll give you aid". Our aid is offered completely unconditionally on a take it or leave it basis ... there's no agenda at all, other than to relieve suffering. If you consider that vile progaganda, manson_322, that's your call I guess. But your mindset seems to be such that the West can do no right at all.

There are many poor countries of no strategic interest whatever, with no natural resources to exploit or large populations to colonise. And there you'll find Western aid agencies actively involved in the relief of suffering. Western aid agencies. No others, of course. Just Western ones.

We're damned if we do & damned if we don't. The real question is why we even bother at all.
