Israel and Syria reveal peace talks in Turkey

www.reuters.com

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel and Syria said on Wednesday they had begun indirect peace talks mediated by Turkey, the first confirmation of negotiations between the long-time enemies in eight years.

In coordinated statements, Israel and Syria said they had begun an open dialogue with the aim of a comprehensive peace. Turkey said delegations of both countries, officially at war since Israel's creation 60 years ago, were already in Istanbul.

A step in the right direction? i think so
However one bit of the article worries me

The United States said it did "not object" but repeated its

criticism of Syria's "support of terrorism" -- a reminder for many analysts that U.S. hostility to Damascus, and to its Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah allies, makes a Syria-Israel deal unlikely before President George W. Bush steps down in January.

Why does the US have to butt into everything?
The isrealis and syrains having Peace talks..great but then the US has to say that even tho they 'dont object' they still dont view syria as a non hostile nation.. why would they even say that? the peace talks dont even concern them

The united states is fueled by war
if the Israelis started getting along with its neigbours (vice versa with arabs)
starting with syria

think of all the weapons that will go to waste or companies that will go bust because their best cusumers dont need repleanishing of new stock.

edit:

to add i hope this goes well and Syria and Israel reach a good understanding and syria gets its land back and israel makes a friend out of a adversory.

it would be a good step in the right direction, hopefully one day they can extend this hand further accross to other adverseries.

Most experts agree that Olmert and Assad are both in such trouble at home that they are using this "peace initiative" to draw attention away from their troubles. They are both in the same boat politically.
